How is Michigan an instant contender after two season with a new coach?

There's an even bigger gap in coaching between Michigan and NU, than a talent gap. Don Brown is one of the best defensive minds in football.

NU fans refuse to acknowledge that coaching matters; the knee jerk reaction is ALWAYS BLAME THE PLAYERS.

There was not a 59 point talent gap last night.

NU treated the Wisconsin loss like a moral victory and thought everything would be fine against Ohio State.

The coaches didn't have the team ready to play tonight. There are deficiencies on both lines, but they aren't as bad as we showed.

BOTTOM LINE -- The team didn't show up mentally, and Nebraska has problems since the 1999 season with this.

That's false. Right here on this board we have people blaming the coaches for every little mistake, both real and imagined.

Recruits who demand promises of immediate playing time, who expect to go "three and done" and hit "da league," or rack up big stats regardless of whether that style results in wins, aren't ever going to make Nebraska great.

One of those players? Fine. Two? Then it better be a serious need. More than that per class? That's not what will make NU good long-term.
In fact, it will diminish the advantages NU does have -- Nebraska's advantage has always been its local character and tradition.

How has that advantage played out since January of 2002?

'Those' kinds of recruits are what get Bama, Ohio State, Florida State, and others national championships in this current age. As long as our school continues to actively stand for the things it stands for, and go after 'high character' kids, we won't be getting to an elite level any time soon, and people need to figure out if they're okay with that.

In answering the question of the thread, Michigan does have very good/great talent from Hoke's recruiting. Harbaugh has added to that talent with even better recruiting, and many of those freshmen and sophomores are playing right now. Harbaugh also doesn't eff around and it is either his way or the highway, so there is no "transition" period.

Better players and Harbaugh is an elite coach that demands excellence.

According to 247 in the last 5 recruiting cycles Michigan has brought in 62 4 or 5 star recruits. Nebraska has brought in 26.

So far they have 11 in their 2017 class and we have 3. Better pick it up.

Think about this really think about it.Take emotion out of it, do you see us even coming close to matching this?

Here's the biggest contention on this board. There are lots of folks here who think NU has a lot of talented players. We do not. That's only 5 4 star or 5 star recruits per season. I'd like to know how many of those are 5 stars. One maybe? There is a huge talent gap between us and Michigan or Ohio State. And this isn't a new thing. There was a bowl game a few years back when one of our coaches said something to the effect of 'look at their guys and then looks at ours.'

Thanks for compiling that data. There are a lot of people, like the OP, who think we have elite talent. That information tells it all.

Nobody thinks we have elite talent.

We do have better talent than Indiana, Wisconson, Northwestern, and we're about on par with Penn State though...

Harbaugh is one of the most elite coaches in CFB history who is coaching at his alma mater. That is how. Be patient, one bad loss is not the downfall of this whole program.

I am sorry sir but you are an "idiot" if you think this is about losing one game. These kind of games show you in a real and painful way where we are as a program. There is a huge talent gap both in talent and coaching between the upper echelon and us. The question is what if anything will change to make us relevant again.

Thank you for your input, have a great day! :) I disagree with you, by the way.

I think the biggest thing is that everytime we think the shellackings are done, the next year there is a worse one. That really, really gets old. It'd get old if Nebraska didn't have a history of dominance on the field. When you look at what we used to be it is just a tragedy.

At this point Nebraska is a shadow of its former self. Don't blame the kids, they are doing their best, but you have to blame the ADs and coaches who took us to this point. And there is no sign of a turnaround anytime soon.

The best coach in the world can't win without the talent to do so and at this point Florida, LSU, Alabama, tOSU, Michigan turn away players that are ranked higher than what Nebraska even has a shot at. No way to win against that long term without an amazing coach. Our coach is a great guy but I don't think he is an elite Xs and Os guy. It ain't happening no matter how much we want to try to convince ourselves it will.

Superior talent across the board + great defense + sticking to what works + great coaching + heisman caliber difference maker = contender

we can't even run the ball for 3-4 yards consistently and have a qb who isn't consistent with his mechanics, much less passing results. coupled with no difference makers on either side of the ball, non existent pressure and a secondary that refuses to play in between the qb and receiver= non contender who gets dismantled by top teams

Talent talent talent. Look at Michigans front 7 and look at ours. Look at Michigans quarterback who I Paul's argue is best in the B1G. We have no talent and no depth outside Gerry. Our guys are slow, and not as athletic as elite teams. Cmhusker it's not coaching but I find it funny you always say that. If you can't see it's the talent we have than you are blind and ignorant - your precious Bo just couldn't recruit (though I will say he was an average coach) needed to be in the NFL

I don't think we have more talent than Wisconsin. They have much better talent on the OL right now. Maybe we have some guys that are too young to play right now that have some real talent but not what we have to play with this year.

We have better WRs but don't have a QB that can hit them consistently. They have better LBs, it's not really close. They can get pressure on the QB, we can't. They've got better RBs. Secondary is pretty close.

In fairness they've been recruiting to their style of play for 20+ years now. We're in year 2 of trying to recruit to this style.
