CFB Commissioners: Games Are Too Long

OK...the championship game is a very very poor game to base things off of. If I'm a fan of one of those teams, I don't give a rip how long it takes and I want the calls to be reviewed when needed to get them right.

As for regular season games, I would love them to be shortened for no other reason than maybe we could actually watch the start of our game on the channel it's supposed to be on instead of the game ahead of it going too long and over lapping.

No, it is our destiny!

The games do at times seem long and I would like to see the study what drives the stoppages. (On that note why not let the clock just run and add in stoppage time, ok just kidding) . For me I hate the time spent reviewing calls, I would add a 20 or 30 second limit on the review and basically if the crew cant make a decision quickly then the call on the field stands. Perhaps dump even more commercials into the half time as I don't care at all about what the commentators have to say, maybe run a box around them that says this silly banter being brought to you by Viagra or something, then cut a few minutes of commercials out of the game. You could say I'm using the idea of shortening the game to get rid of things that annoy me.

I think dumping more commercials into halftime is a great idea. However, I'm not sure the companies paying for the advertisement would feel the same way.

Changes to commercials just aren't going to happen. If we want to keep enjoying our Big 10 pay raise then we have to deal with commercials. Reviews are the biggest issue, but instead of changing the review process, why doesn't the NCAA hire full time officials or provide them with much better training so fewer calls are missed on the field. There are too many plays that are reviewed that should have been called correctly to begin with.

It's also about time that we move on from the chain gang. The only reason I can see for this not changing is tradition. Why can't they just use a laser pointer to point across the field instead of stopping the action to run the chains out to measure. Fields don't have the dramatic crowns that they had 20-30 years ago so it shouldn't be too difficult to set up a laser pointer to run perpendicular to the sidelines. Hell, they could even make the unofficial yellow line on tv be the official line and then the refs on the field wouldn't have to worry about the measurements at all. There are so many more efficient ways to measure for a first down that don't require running chains up and down the sideline and across the field to measure. It would even be safer for the officials who have to hold the markers on the sideline. Get rid of those officials and spend more on to improve the refs.

I agree maybe you could get one prime minute for 3 half time minutes.

Fair point, but it could also be a fantastic game to base things off of for the very reason you mentioned. Bama and Clemson fans don't care about length, but ESPN/NCAA folk want as many people as possible tuning in including the casual college football fan. Most of the people watching last night were not Bama or Clemson fans.

But, I would again reiterate that I don't want to see changes to replays based off of last night's game.

After a wonderful college season full of excitement and heartbreak, I feel that one thing overshadowed it all to me. The length of the games was really long and they seem to keep getting longer. As for yesterdays game, does a championship game deserve to get a pass to be four hours long, I say sure, it does. The one thing that aggravates me the most is when a team punts the ball and after that one play they go back to commercial break. To me it doesn't make sense at all, also none of the long length is on the coaches or officials or the amount of time outs, its on ESPN and other stations. Time after time I see the same commercial over and over again. I just want these games to end faster before it is a norm to sit and watch regular season games for almost four hours.

College basketball had this same problem get resolved by speeding up the games, so why can't we speed up college football games. During an official review maybe go to a commercial break and come back after the review is over. Three hour games with some leeway to three hours and fifteen minutes should be the goal to end the games.

What are other peoples thoughts on this?

I feel it might just be me complaining about the billions of commercial breaks but does anyone else not feel this way?

Anyone have any idea on how to speed up the game or is this just something we all are going to have to get used to?

Am I the only one that is fine with how things are?

I don't think you are. I just think for a lot of people, perhaps even most people, a 4-to-4 1/2 hour games is not ideal. ESPN and other TV stations want as many people possible watching their games. A championship game that doesn't end until 11:30 p.m. is pretty drastic for people with kids, early jobs, etc. Ideally, you'd want the game to end no later than 10:15 or 10:30.

I guess we'll have to move to California. Then the games are prime time and not bedtime!

Mountain time zone does have it's advantages. :thumbs

I have found that the Mountain time zone is ideal for viewing prime time sports, although last night I didn't get to sleep until 11 PM, which is way after my bed time.

Game didn't end until after 12:30 here. Start the game earlier next year.

In my view reviewing every play at any time is a net negative and creates a barrier to fairness. It is not fair to Clemson to give Alabam a "standing eight count" after every big catch. Just this fact about replay, that it stalls momentum and gives rest and coaching time to the defense, very well could have changed the outcome of the game. They even stopped a play in progress, which we will never know the result of. This excessive use of replay IS as much a part of the game now as the forward pass.

I think that you use the best officials you can and put your best training and support and accountability with them. And you give each coach one challenge flag per half. That is about the best it could get. Otherwise the replay uses more time than it is worth (think also about all the times it lets a call stand thereby wasting time).
