Preseason All B1G: Not Pretty

Recommended Posts

Specialists bump us a little, but without them just four guys listed among top four all-conference teams:

Chris Jones, 1st CB

DPE, 1st PR

Nick Gates, 2nd OL

Drew Brown, 3rd K

Aaron Williams, 3rd S

Stanley Morgan, 4th All Purpose

Tre Bryant, 4th KR

By contrast, tOSU has seven on 1st O&D.

Not counting specialists we have more on the top four teams than: Illinois, MSU, Purdue & Rutgers.

Alot of new faces on this Husker team I think it's hard for analysts to get a feel for what we are going to look like. I think we could vastly outperform the pundits predictions but it's hard to say because the team and alot of the players are question marks

This would be a glaring reason why we haven't done so hot the last couple seasons. Lets hear the narratives spinning in 3....2...

This is a prediction heading into the season, so it's more of a result of not doing so hot the last couple seasons.

Is that not what he said?

I'm confused by him calling it a reason - that's backwards to me. I'm saying our poor performance led to the perceived lack of talent, not the other way around. His statement would make more sense if it was about last year's All-B1G team.

I guess I don't have any issues with this preseason list. If we want respect and admiration, we're going to have to do something on the field to earn it. The N on the helmet used to be enough. Not anymore. We've been a 2nd or 3rd tier B1G team ever since joining the conference. I suspect well do better than this list insinuates but we've done nothing yet that would indicate they got it all wrong.

We've had a glaring lack of all conference selections for a decade and the prior decade, we probably had a few selections that we somewhat undeserved as a result of our perception of being better than we were at times, particularly in the 2000 to 2005 period. We were overrated in 2001 certainly.

One also needs to keep in mind that there is a great bias in the Big Ten towards the historic Big Ten powers (Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Penn State - some more than others of course). All are 'blue blood' in the conference folks' minds while Nebraska would be on the outside looking in until we make a serious run of about 5 or 6 years where we play like the Huskers of the 70s through the 90s, Sadly, it may take another decade before we ever really see that as the climb to the top is a long, steep, trecherous one fraught with many obstacles, pitfalls, etc. The Big Ten didn't invite Nebraska to come in and become the new King of the conference and steal all the thunder. We were brought in to provide national prominence and because we were in fact down, the chance to beat us and add to the blue bloods national perception. We also bring lots of fans to away games and help the Big Ten also rans sell unwanted seats.

Should Nebraska have a great season (an 'ify' proposition certainly), then we will land more players on the post season honors lists than we will start the year with because honors go to those who win.

This. Save for 2009/2010 we have done nothing in about 15 years to warrant any pre-season accolades.......Win and it fixes everything. Quit getting blown out and it will help as well.

We are getting the talent needed to win (2018 class ranked #6). This year and next we start to see what Riley and Co can really do with more. That was the thing when he was hired. Imagine what he can do with NU's talent. IMO, and with our first two seasons with him, we might not have had as big of talent gap with Oregon State as we all thought. This year and next, we start to see what a lot os "stars" look like. I am truly impressed with the recruiting thus far.

Bias or do they in fact have better players? I think their records would indicate they have better players.

It's best to just ignore him, honestly. It's what most of us do.

I'm saying our lack of depth of elite talent is the result of our poor results the past couple years.

Then we agree. Was there a point about the coming year and this preseason All-B1G team you're trying to make?

Yes.

The lack of elite talent and lack of results is why we have an ugly pre-season All B1G list.

Any other questions?
