Obama born in Africa was a political lie.  Bad look for those who proposed it.

It wasn’t Obama, it was Obamacare and none other than the Zekester proposed this.  Panels that chose whether you get treatment or not at the end of life stage.  Not a lie

HRC had a classified server where it shouldn’t have been.  This again is fact.  if you have a problem with how blown up then story is, well that’s a different subject.

2016 election.  HRC and the Dems are the ones that actually say DJT was not a credibly elected President:dunno   Again you are comparing untrue stories that I presented to  this???

boy, you really don’t understand your own premise.

Forgot about Uranium One.  Perfect example.

DIdn't think Benghazi quite fit this particular list, but given a premise about hyping a dishonest story to discredit a political opponent, and continuing to promote it after contradictory evidence comes in, why not?

This could really go in either utopia thread, but this one's about San Fran Nan, so here we are.

Congress should not be able to profit off their insider knowledge. Full stop.

I think that's something everyone in this forum can agree on.

Didn’t she ask for this crime wave with her policies and an DA that won’t prosecute? Shoplifting under 1k in value is a misdemeanor. Not sure whether we should be happy she woke up or if she finally realized this is unpopular and this reaction is nothing but political rhetoric for 2022.

It wasn't quite the soft-on-crime measure some make it out to be, as much as an attempt to relieve an overwhelmed judicial and penal system so it could focus on a backlog of more violent crimes.

The crime wave itself is the result of increasingly sophisticated organized crime rings, not shoplifters suddenly inspired by the legal change. It started in SF and the surrounding area a couple years ago with a surge in car break-ins that were highly strategic and hard to catch. The ballsy snatch and grabs that started at Walgreens and led to Luis Vuitton and Union Square was next level shoplifting, quite likely by the same networks. The targets are constantly evolving, including catalytic converters and high end bike racks, which these guys have figure how to saw or pry off in seconds. When done on a large and organized level like this, it's no longer a misdemeanor.

But it is bad optics, bad for tourism, bad for the city, and I don't think a "get tough" stance is going to ruffle too many liberal feathers.

Well this is a bad look for the Senator who later says he regrets attending. It gave me a good laugh though.

"We invite you to join the Communist Party in this epic time as we make good trouble to uproot systemic racism, retool the war economy, tax the rich, address climate change, secure voting rights and create a new socialist system that puts people, peace and planet before profits," emcee Ben McManus told the audience during the event.

Communist gonna be communists.  Kinda funny because he says thank you for your past support.  No getting around knowing what kind of group he was speaking for and laying praise on

See here's my struggle .... we've done such a good job of making the word COMMUNIST as an adjective/noun a bad one, but the what they stand for is not something I'm opposed to - in fact, quite the opposite.   In my opinion it's sorta like "defund the police".  Bad word choice for marketing to the public but the content of the initiative is right on target.  It's when someone with socialist beliefs slips into authoritarian or totalitarian rule that things get bad.  And that behavior isn't specific to party or ideology (no need to remind you of our most recent past and ongoing battle).

Yeah...I feel like Stalin sort of did all the work to make that word a bad one.

The senator came out and said he regretted attending.  Did he mean it? I suspect he agrees with the organization’s positions and he really didn’t regret going there, but he had to do some damage control because it was a self proclaimed communist group. As you mentioned, communist is a dirty word. Has there been a communist state that didn’t have authoritarian rule or a ruling class?

I think there are like 4-5 true communist countries left.  It would be hard to pick which one would be a great place to live.

I agree - no country that has truly been truly a communist one thus far has been a great place to live (nor am I expressing admiration or support of those countries), because they have also had an authoritarian or totalitarian ruler - that doesn't mean that the goals of  uprooting systemic racism, taxing the rich, addressing climate change, securing voting rights and putting people first over profits are bad.

I think the question I am asking is, can you achieve those things without an authoritarian ruler?  I think if our country's liberal democracy set up worked properly, with elected officials truly working for the needs of their people (specific to the above and more) then couldn't we have a country that worked for the betterment of its people?  It's the beauty of a co-equal branches of government isn't it?  The elected reps advocate for their people, work with the leader of the country to accomplish things that make things better for the people, not the companies that line their pockets to gain their vote.

The Joe Manchin situation is a perfect example.  If he was truly listening to his constituents, looking at how his state performs against the norm and voting to make things better for them - education, healthcare, poverty are all things that WV suffers in great numbers, his state backed the BBB plan by something like 75-85%. But he had companies from outside WV paying him, holding fundraisers for him in order to get him to vote against his constitutents.  It's nuts.
