It's definitely more complicated than this, but Iraq and Iran are both predominantly Shia (Iran about 90%, Iraq about 60%). During their war Iraq was ruled by the Sunni Baath party. Today Iraq has received support from Iran in the fight against ISIS. The enemy (Iran) of my enemy (ISIS) is my friend, especially when we share the same values. 1 Link to comment
