BIGREDFAN_in_OMAHA
owh  Published Wednesday December 27, 2006  Arizona's third-rated prospect picks NU  BY MITCH SHERMAN WORLD-HERALD BUREAU   LINCOLN - Maybe it's the Sam Keller effect.   Jaivorio Burkes  Nebraska has added another commitment from a top prospect in the Phoenix area. This time it's 6-foot-4, 310-pound guard Jaivorio Burkes, who said Tuesday he picked the Huskers.  Burkes turned down scholarship offers from Oklahoma, Michigan, Tennessee, Arizona State, Arizona, Colorado and a host of other schools.  Rated as Arizona's No. 3 prospect by rivals.com, Burkes is the fourth football player in 31 days from his state to join the NU recruiting class of 2007. Their presence among this bulging class of 28 has placed the Huskers in position to sign a consensus top 10 group nationally in six weeks.  Burkes, a first-team all-Class 4A pick at Moon Valley High School in Phoenix, is joined in this class by fellow lineman Marcel Jones of Phoenix, plus wide receiver Eric Hagg and defensive end William Yancy of Peoria.  The current Nebraska roster includes one scholarship player from Arizona, linebacker Nick Covey. But in August, the Huskers began to build a presence in the desert by snagging Keller, the high-profile quarterback transfer from ASU.  And then Bill Busch got busy.  Busch, the third-year assistant coach, led Nebraska's recruiting effort for all four Arizona high school stars, in addition to cornerback Armando Murrillo of Eastern Arizona College. Murrillo, who signed a letter of intent last week, is also considered part of this recruiting class.  Burkes ranks as the No. 7 player in the nation at his position by rivals.com. He gives NU its coveted second offensive line recruit. The Huskers were aiming for that exact number, knowing they would lose only seniors Greg Austin and Kurt Mann among the contributors on the line.  The class for 2008 already includes two offensive linemen in Baker Steinkuhler of Lincoln Southwest and Dan Hoch of Harlan, Iowa.  Meanwhile, NU continues to pursue another Arizona player for 2007. Multi-position prospect Prince Amukamara, the Arizona Republic player of the year in the state, visited Lincoln in November with Burkes and Hagg. Quote Link to comment
