chatter about the Big 1O, again

on the "other" board.

Lots of supporters for NU to bolt to the Big 1O if the conference expands. The proponents all seem to have hard-ons for the Texas schools - namely UT - and wanting to get out of the Big 12 conference as a result.

OK, let's say that NU is now in the Big 1O. If our objective is national championships, where are our recruits going to come from? I mean seriously, you think Texas talent - which is a major pipeline for us now - is going to come to Lincoln to play the Boilermakers and Hoosiers, along with the rest of the rust belt teams?

Our recruiting would be damaged to a point where we would be a top 30 team at best FROM NOW ON, with no hope of ever sniffing the top 10 again.

Our saving grace right now is that there is A LOT of interest in Nebraska football in the state of Texas, and as a result, we pull in some serious talent from TX.

Sheez. Let's get real here and look at the Big 1O for what it would likely be to Nebraska: The final few nails in the coffin of national prominence.

This topic should probably be in the NCAA or recruiting forum but I digress.

Nebraska joining, or being asked to join, the Big 10+1 will never happen because:

1. Big 10+1 schools think that academically they are on par with Harvard and they erroneously think Nebraska doesn't measure up.

2. If the Big 10+1 were to want to expand to 12 teams their first choice would obviously be Notre Dame.

3. Leaving the Big 12 at this time, or even in the near future, would be a bad mistake because honestly there's nowhere else to go. The Huskers couldn't join the SEC, Pac 10, Big East or ACC because it wouldn't make sense geographically. Furthermore, the Huskers couldn't go independent because then they'd really have trouble filling their schedule. Like it or not, for the forseeable future Nebraska is stuck in the Big 12.

Notre Dame . . . it would make the MOST sense for them to join the Big 10, given their rivalry with Michigan and their geographic location, but if they joined a conference for football wouldn't it be the Big East?

The most appealing part about potentially joining the Big 10 is the yearly opportunity to whale on Michigan and Ohio State.

It makes some sense, but I completely agree with you about recruiting. It seems you see it more in comments from recruits in Texas about knowing about NU because it is in the Big XII and they follow the Big XII. It doesn't mean that NU can't recruit outside of Conference areas, ala the recent successes in CA, but it does make it harder I would think.

Notre Dame will NEVER join any conference. Know of any other school with a network TV deal to show all their games, for around 10 million / season?

Stuck in the Big 12???

WTF? How can you be "stuck" when you're playing in argueably the best and most tradition filled league in all of college football?

Big 10? That's like the intramural football league...for, like, the fat kids who aren't coordinated enough to play soccer or one of the other girly sports that the Big 10 makes up so they can be the champions of it right?

Why would the class of the Big 12 north want to ruin the conference that they helped to found? Sure we got hoses by TU and the like at the inception of the Big 12. But that doesn't change the fact that no other school in the north, an few in the south can match the tradition NU has in athletics or academics. The Huskers ARE the Big 12 north in football, even when we're awful!

Why throw all that away to play a bunch of schools you have no natural rivalries with, either geographically or otherwise? :dunno It doesn't make sense, and it will NEVER happen! Not in our lifetimes anyway.
