Texas A&M is rattling the SEC sabre again because of ESPN 8: The Bevo

Recommended Posts

Just to add in on Texas ruining the Big 12-2. ESPN approached Texas Tech to air the game on the WrongHorn Network. Since they stood up to ESPN now they are going after Oklahoma State.

Tech chancellor Kent Hance nixed any deal, reportedly saying, "I don't want a Tech fan to have to give one dime to the Longhorn Network." President Guy Bailey and athletic director Kirby Hocutt agreed with Hance's stance (then again, who's going to go against their boss on something like this).

If you were Texas how would you get rid of the leeches on you?

If you were Texas how would you be "in a conference with N.D."? (apparently Dodds let that slip at a booster function that Texas would just start a conference with N.D., if a&m and OU were to leave)

If you were the big ten how would you get entrenched in the biggest and fastest growing southern state in the sunbelt? without a "Tech problem"?

If you were the big ten how could you lock up 6-7 of the top 10 winning-est teams ever?

I think everyone's being played and Delany is the mastermind.

I really and truly believe Texas is doing itself a giant disservice with its unabashed arrogance. Texas has a lot of built in advantages, but they also act in such an imperious manner that there can be no confusion as to their intentions: take as much as they can, as fast as they can, and disregard any impact their actions have on any other institution as irrelevant.

People like Larry Scott have long memories. And that is a small fraternity, that of conference commissioners. (With clout.) Super conferences are the future. It is going to happen. And I think Texas will be stunned, STUNNED, at the reception they receive when the big CFB re-organization happens and divides things quite clearly into the haves and have-nots.

The reality is, Texas is a gigantic pain in the ass to deal with, and they wear their arrogance like it's a holy medal. They have also stepped on some toes, most notably Scott. People like Jim Delaney, Mike Slive, they saw the way Texas operated during the Pac-16 discussions. Universities like Florida, Ohio State, FSU, USC, Nebraska, Michigan, LSU, Oklahoma...these are all big time universities with huge prestige levels, and none of them are even close to being as insufferably conceited and crookedly self-serving as Texas. When it comes time to decide who you want to work with, who you want to live with...who wants or needs Texas when their actions have proven incontrovertibly that they will screw over anyone and everyone to get whatever they want?

I envision a future where Texas faces consequences they did not foresee.

Well said! +1

I think the Big 12's days are numbered. I think either A&M or Mizzou will make the first move and bolt to the SEC and put an end to the conference.

It will only take one from the Big XII to do so this time around, assuming that the Big 10, ACC, and Pac-12 expand to 14 alongside the SEC. And per the Aggies Insider article, it could be Missouri that kicks this off, and not A&M--Missouri is already unhappy before Bevo TV showed up.

Yeah that's what I meant that either one or the other will leave and kick it off. The conference can't survive anyone else leaving since everyone already has plans made on where they will go once that happens.

I thought that they could always pull in an old SWC school anytime they wanted to.

FYI the new BCS deal only give ND one half of what the other teams get. In exchange we get paid 1.5 million in BCS money on years that we don't go to a BCS bowl. In an amazing coincidence we haven't been to a BCS bowl since that deal was announced in 2007, netting ND 6 million for sitting at home on NYD.

Just curious Joe, what do you think of the whole: "If Texas A&M was to leave, Dodds said the Big 12 might seek to bring in another school. Dodds also said if there was not sentiment to hold the Big 12 together by the remaining members that Texas and possibly Notre Dame could join forces to create a new conference."

So basically how do you feel about joining Texas to create the SWCx3 (third-times-a-charm) but move all your games to esipn 8 (the bevo).

The Dallas Morning News finally admits what the bloggers knew for days--that it's getting serious.

Gov. Rick Perry provided interesting insight Wednesday into the rumors that have Texas A&M eventually leaving the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference.

Asked by The Dallas Morning News ’ statehouse reporters about SEC speculation regarding A&M, Perry responded: "I'll be real honest with you. I just read about it the same time as y'all did. ... As far as I know, conversations are being had. That's frankly all I know. I just refer you to the university and the decision makers over there."

The key phrase is “As far as I know, conversations are being had.” The response by the governor, a former Aggie yell leader and likely future presidential candidate, went beyond the Twitter and message board speculation that erupted in the last 48 hours.

Perry didn’t say if the conversations were strictly internal at this point or involved direct discussions with the Southeastern Conference.

Texas A&M offered this reply when asked to respond: “President Loftin is committed to doing what is best for Texas A&M not only now, but also into the future. We continue to have wide-ranging conversations regarding all aspects of the university, including both academics and athletics.”

Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe also offered a statement: “I'll put it this way, I'm taking it very seriously,” he told the Austin American-Statesman. “Obviously, there are a significant number of Aggie supporters who are interested in going in that (SEC) direction.”

A&M has made clear its displeasure with Texas’ Longhorn Network and its possible impact on the league’s stability. Even though Big 12 athletic directors and board of directors approved a one-year moratorium on the broadcast of high schools on the network last week, the anxiety has continued among the fan base. Among the concern is the possibility of a second football game on the network involving a conference foe.

“Both of those we believe provide a great deal of uncertainty right now for us and the conference,” A&M president R. Bowen Loftin told the San Antonio Express-News following a board of regents meeting last month.

A&M had serious talks with the SEC a year ago when the Big 12 seemed about to fracture. After the Big 12 survived as a 10-team conference, Loftin said that an SEC invitation was only one phone call away. Whether an invite remains that close now is unclear.

I havn't posted on here in while but i thought this was interesting My link. It looks like with the texas network ironed out that A&M has decided to bail and it wont be long before the the big 12 is no more. It just makes me wonder if nebraska will go down in history as the smart school that was the first to get off the sinking ship or the School that started the hole that is sinking the ship. Sorry if there is a thread for this already I didnt see one.

No amount of southern spin can dispel the clear reality of what is happening: The University of Texas at Austin is close to having played a critical role in the collapse of not one, but two major collegiate conferences in less than twenty years. Incredible.

Nebraska clearly emerges as a school with foresight that was bizarrely and inexplicably not shared by all in the what is soon to be the defunct Big 12.

NCHuskerfan2001, don't forget that the school that kicked this all off was Missouri when their school and their state governor started making googly eyes at the Big 10. The Big 10 was going to act on Missouri until Nebraska made it known it was willing to entertain offers.

And both the SEC and the aTm sites have said similar things:

1) Missouri is hot on the SEC, and the SEC is hot on them. Missouri brings two new media markets (KC and St. Louis)--add that to Houston and 1/2 of San Antonio, and the SEC just scored a major deal that boosts football, basketball, AND their media footprint.

2) OU can't move w/o OSU, and OU, OSU, and T. Tech have been talking with the Pac-12 about a 'golden parachute' deal. Don't know who the fourth team would be, but I suspect it would only be a Big XII team if either Missouri doesn't get a SEC deal (Plan C as it were), or if Kansas is unable to shackle itself from K-State (entirely plausible supposedly due to the state legislature's makeup), Kansas or K-State.

The questions are whether or not the SEC and/or Big 10 will stand pat at 14 and 12 (respectively) if the Pac-12 goes 16.

I think the SEC will and will be happy at 14--other than Maryland, there are no other reasonable media markets they can gobble up.

The Big 10 will likely take a hard look at Maryland and, most likely, Kansas, to improve the 'wow' factor on both the market and national cache fronts.

All in all, should be another good off-season next year. :)

Colorado left first! :)

Is the SEC really considering Missouri. I know media market but Missouri will end up around Ole' Miss calibur.

Missouri was always Ole Miss calibur. They only made it to the Big 12 Championship game twice and OU soundly beat them both times. Plus there is only so many calibur teams left to pick from you eventually have to take the also rans.

If the Big 10 took Kansas that would make a good basketball conference. Probably better than the Big East.
