Players win games

Recommended Posts

Sure, coaches like Nick Saban, Urban Meyer and Brian Kelly make a little bit of a difference when it comes to the way that their team performs on the field. But I guarantee you its not as much as they are given credit for. Players win games, players make plays. Last night, our defensive players did not make plays. It's as simple as that. It's not as if they weren't trying, I believe they gave great effort most of the first half. Bottom line is our defensive talent could not match what Wisconsin was running. We had guys in position to make tackles on each of those long runs, that's the coaches job...get players in position to make plays. They did that. Our players for whatever reason, (lack of focus, discipline, or just plain ability) did not make those plays. When Bo had several NFL players on his defense in '09 and '10 Nebraska was a top 5 defense nationally. We don't have those players now, that's all their is to it. Blame the coaches for lack of recruiting, but I believe recruiting is a big cycle...you won't have top level talent available every year especially in the Big 10, no school does. It's just facts. Bo has his deficiencies, but every coach does. Nick Saban freaks out on his players all the time, don't give me that crap about Pelini's attitude. He cares. He also takes the blame for his players not making plays like he did last night. That's the type of coach we want. One who will stand up for his players even when he knows that he did his job, they didn't do theirs. Let's look to the future, look at the talent we have gaining experience, and get excited about their opportunity to play in a great system and for a great defensive coach.

Bo has assembled a stellar staff of inexperienced guys who can not adjust. Bo's scheme has been figured out and exploited. Without NFL talent, read Cally recruits, he has been exposed. To add, NFL talent, Haag, Prince, SUH, Gomes, David etc....can cover up ALOT of issues.

His, and staff's inability to adjust to anything in the Wisky game showed how inept they are. We FAILED to adjust. Our defensive guru and the next big thing in Paps gave up almost 600 yrds on the ground. 600 YARDS............

In 2010, had it not been for injuries, David would have never seen the field. When he did, Bo always said he did good, BUT doesn't know the system. Hey Bo, the "system and process" just gave the fans the biggest beat down witnessed EVER regarding a complete 4 quarter collapse.

We have the talent, IMO, to play with anyone. We come out flat (coaches) are not fundamentally sound (coaches) are allowed to continue to play after several miscues (coaches) are running the plays they call (coaches) in a system that is too complicated (see jumping around on D when a team motions), etc.... Every game we have lost, we have flat out been out coached.

i agree with most of your post. However, to say the staff cannot adjust is not accurate. We adjusted in most every game we played this year. We have been a second half team all year that has made adjustments to what the opponents have done in the first half. That has been the reason for our success this year. It would be more accurate to say the staff were confused and didn't adjust properly in this game.

That said, agree with the rest of your assessment, especially with the scheme. Sometimes you just need to line up and beat the guy in front of you. We are too busy trying to figure out the perfect call for each play.

Tell that to Lane Kiffin and USC, or Luke Fickell at OSU last year. They are pretty much proof that what you just said holds no bearing on reality.

If you don't think quality coaching makes a difference, then how do you explain situations where noted coaches change programs around quickly? And, if the players are solely responsible for the outcome, whose responsibility is it to recruit the players who can get the job done? Pelini may well be a good defensive coordinator at a top program where they recruit quality players, but he does not appear to have the capacity to get those type kids here while he is the acting head coach. Also, it appears to me that he cannot or will not make overtures to well established, proven assistant coaches. When Tom Osborne, or any other noted head coach, walked into a kids front room and offered a scholarship, seldom did they refuse the offer. Not the case with Pelini.

I watched last week's episode of Big Red Wrap Up and Osborne said he credited his success to the fact that he and his staff made it clear that that the player's came first, that he conveyed to the players that he was concerned about their total well being, not just football. That is why players would "run through walls" for the guy. Matt Davidson spoke at a function I attended. That was the major theme of his lecture, Osborne's willingness to relate to the players . Is Pelini doing that? Coaching does make a difference.

Also, developing players to reach their potential, and even beyond their potential, is "coaching." Pelini does not seem to get that done.

You guys talking about adjustments-do you even know what it means? Can you look at a game even point out adjustments?

Those criticizing the talent level have a legitimate gripe. Those criticizing the recruiting maybe have one, but that it getting better. You have to realize, the 5th year seniors on this team were a class that was patched together when Bo first got here. What were you expecting? He's not Urban Meyer. This is not Alabama. We are not in the SE region. The normal seniors were his second class. It was a good class numbers-wize, but the talent part may have been a little low. His classes have gradually improved over the last three. Last year's class was small, but overall maybe his most talents-maybe because only time will tell.

We have to be patient. Continuity is the key here. He's not getting fired, so you might as well support him. Just like our President, like him or not, you need to support him, because if he fails, we're doomed.

That's kind of a bad analogy, but I'm just trying to make a point, that he aint goin nowhere, so it may be time to get the idea out of your head and worry about more important things.

The thought that we don't have the players on this team to win these games is total BS. This team has talent. They have proven it over and over again this year. Even if we lose this game, we have FAR better talent on this team than what was on display on Saturday night. It's not a talent issue.

Players make plays. Wisconsin is NOT loaded with more talent than we have. This was their 13th game of the season. They had played this team earlier in the year and nothing new was shown on Saturday night. Why do we have the talent to beat them earlier in the year but now we don't?

Which I think is why most people are so worked up. We all know deep down that no changes are going to happen which means we are going to be having these same discussions next year when OSU kicks our butt in the BIG champ game.

This. It ain't the 90's (wish it were) and the landscape of college football is changed forever. The reasons we had the talent in those days aren't available anymore to us and most of it was money. We could get the talent here because we had the money and were allowed to use it. That's changed now with NCAA rules. A little harder to convince some of the kids from Compton and places like that to come here and like it or not weather and location IS a big factor. And you ain't gonna win championships with milk drinkers. It has changed. Why else are there almost weekly upsets now, and every year these are happening now. People complained years ago about equality and they got their way.

We had the talent to beat them......this team has good players, but need help on the lines and the LB's.

We have SOME talent but nowhere near the speed we need. And honestly, some of our players have a sense of entitlement and not very good work ethics and before someone asks how I know, I'm not able to say, let's just see I seen some of the work ethics up close.

I think if one looks back they'll realize it isn't the NCAA rules as to why we don't get those type of players anymore. Rather, it was when we joined the Big 12 is when things changed. We weren't allowed to bring in the prop. 48 players any longer. This is when we seemed to see a noticeable change in talent. Everyone sees the SEC as having the best athletes. It's by no coincidence that the SEC has the lowest standards for incoming players to meet.

Is the SEC still allowed to "over-sign" their recruiting classes?
