Brion Carnes and Bo's Doghouse

Lord knows I'm happy to dump on Bo Pelini, but I'm not feeling it here.

 

Brion Carnes just didn't cut it.

Nothing surprising here. Bo was a joke for a coach and there's a reason he's coaching in the FBS now. Even Frazier didn't feel Carnes was getting a fair shot. I think with the proper coaching, obviously having the opportunity and the right players around him Carnes could have been a good QB for us.

 

The "I still love Nebraska" quote from Carnes shows he's 100 times classier than his former coach will ever be. Best of luck to him in his future.

I blame the fans and the media for this whole "doghouse" rumor to begin with.

 

Just like I blame the fans and media for just about everything else really. Now we have a player claiming truth to the "doghouse" rumors saying he doesn't believe he got a fair shot?

 

I call BS, I mean, what would he know about it?

 

Fans, media, and now even players questioning Pelini's methods. Why is the whole world just out to get this guy?

 

I guarantee the best players played all the time. If you messed up in practice, school, or disrespected Bo in some way, I'm sure he was very forgiving and approached you with a calm cool manner just the same as he did before. If anything Bo Pelini was not known as an angry man who holds grudges or loses his head.

 

That staff was known for developing depth and getting backup players experience. Especally at QB, this staff was known for developing and playing backups. I mean they wanted to develop Martinez so badly that they even marched him out there injured multiple times. If Brion never got playing time, it was his own fault. I'm sure the last staff did everything they could.

That actually kind of reminds me of an editorial that Josh Faulkenberry's girlfriend posted after she found out he wasn't getting a spot on the roster (not sure if this warrants a separate thread or not, but if somebody wants to start a thread with the ed, feel free to start one). Basically just sour grapes because somebody thought their friend/cousin/significant other/etc. didn't get a fair shake.

Cody Green got to start at Tulsa, but he didn't exactly thrive there.

 

Some good quarterbacks fall through the cracks. Some are just stuck in the wrong system.

This isn't the first time I've heard this, so it's not coming out of nowhere. Airing out grievances is not a good look, though. At that point, nobody takes you seriously.

 

I think we do know that quarterback was an issue throughout Bo's tenure. He was extremely lucky to have the pure athleticism and (occasionally) sheer magic of Taylor Martinez. They did not seem to handle their other QBs very well. Witt transferred early when we could have used him in the competition; maybe that was his fault. Green transferred early when we could have used him in the QB room; maybe that was his fault. Carnes transferred early.....maybe that was his fault. Spano was rushed back in cavalier fashion and it destroyed his career. Lee elected to get offseason surgery, coaches didn't like it, and his health status through 2010 remains a contested mystery.

 

McKewon argues that burning Green's redshirt hurt his development, and I think that was the consensus heading into 2009: please don't burn Cody's redshirt. He needs the development year. Instead, he won the starting job midway through the season ... and it was yanked. The next year, they gave him snaps at his own 1-yard line. Yes, he made some mistakes. But he also kept getting yanked after a few plays. It was perhaps not the greatest show of quarterback management. When Carnes came on in garbage time, he too was not asked to do anything meaningful on the field. They gave him the same (running) plays to call over and over and kill clock until the game was over. And that was the last we heard from him.

 

We know that Bo -- not through any nefarious sort of doghouse, but just through his judgment as a coach -- has made all sorts of interesting calls on competition. It wasn't once or twice. We would often wonder how some players get thrown into the fire for what seems like a chance, make a mistake, and then get pulled and never heard from again for a long time. And how other players make mistakes over and over on the field but seem to have infinite leash. There is an LB currently on the roster who would have transferred for this reason if Bo had stayed, but instead, he's a key part of an extremely thin position group. We saw this pattern of seemingly uneven accountability at WR, DT, and OL over the past few years. And maybe the coaches (or Bo, rather) knew best. It was hard to understand, though.

 

And there were few players Bo was enamored with more than Taylor Martinez. Again -- probably fairly, you could argue. He stuck with Taylor and Taylor accumulated stats in volume. Where other QBs had their confidence shaken, Taylor was never rattled and always acted like a QB1. He also upended the depth chart after one scrimmage in 2010, unexpectedly causing the entire offense to change close to the start of the season (to the chagrin of many veteran players), and never, ever faced a serious QB battle again. As Sam McKewon notes also, he was good -- but not good enough to never be challenged.

 

Again, maybe we never had the guys to challenge him. It's not like Green lit it up at Tulsa or Carnes did anything special at UNI. With the last staff's track record, though, I wouldn't be surprised if their management of the QB room also had something to do with it. As well as their ability to develop QBs. To put it mildly, it was lacking. We talk a lot about struggles reading defenses and so on that some of our current QBs have, but remember, they were also taught to just be RBs who can throw. In those words, no less.

 

Heading into 2015, what do we have in the QB room under Bo? Armstrong, another strong physical talent with a lot of inconsistency/quarterbacking/field general issues who was locked into his position with no challenger in sight. Fyfe, locked into the QB2 spot and with respect to Ryker, he hasn't ever looked like a serious contender for a starting QB job at a top program. Stanton, another ballyhooed recruit with promise out of high school, expected to compete for the job in 2014, but was never in the competition and who in two years here has fallen completely off the map. Maybe that's his fault, too. Or maybe his development as a QB suffered similar setbacks as past QBs in this program like Green and Carnes, and with younger players coming in he now has a mountain to climb. We saw his base skills in the spring game, but he seems to be mentally crumbling under the pressure.

 

A long story short, a high school quarterback who wants to hone his skills in the coming 4-5 years needs to give Nebraska a serious look right now, with Mike Riley and Danny Langsdorf in town. They would have been far better off elsewhere in the recent past. Heck. Their development would've been better served at Oregon State. As for who did and didn't get a fair shot while here...Bo's gone and they're gone. Let's just be thankful the outlook for any QB in this program is getting a whole lot better.

Considering the hype surrounding Zach Darlington and (to a lesser extent) AJ Bush, and considering the laughable "development" we saw at the QB position during Bo's tenure, I'd say we're damn lucky that Riley came in when he did. I hope I'm still saying that when the time comes for Darlington or Bush to start here.
