Eric the Red
Nebraska QB Johnny Stanton to transfer By Sam McKewon LINCOLN — The race for Nebraska's No. 2 quarterback lost a horse on Thursday when coach Mike Riley announced that sophomore Johnny Stanton, a much-ballyhooed prospect in the 2013 recruiting class, was transferring from the program. --------------------------------- Statement from Nebraska Head Coach Mike Riley: “Johnny Stanton informed me this afternoon that he has chosen to transfer to another institution to continue his college career. Johnny is an outstanding young man and we wish him the very best moving forward.” -------------------------------- Brian Christopherson @HuskerExtraBC Johnny Stanton told me he plans to play next fall at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California, then see what comes after that. lo country
Have we had one highly recruited kid stay/actually make it to NU? GAbbert, Beck, Freeman, Sterling, Stanton, Crawford etc..... For whatever reason, the "good ones" don't pan out or don't make it here. Quote Link to comment
Landlord
Selfishly bummed to hear this but it's gotta be the best choice for Johnny. Absolutely great kid, great family, and I bet he'd say he's loved his time here but you've gotta do what you can for yourself. Good luck Johnny. 4 Quote Link to comment

jmfb
For those who thought Stanton was the man, was in the mix, was going to play You were wrong Very evident by his lack of mention this spring and his poor play in spring game Lack of accuracy is not easy to fix Quote Link to comment

BigRedBuster
Thanks for coming to Nebraska and trying. Seems like a class act and wish him the best. Quote Link to comment

Hammerhead
Kid had a lot of hype behind him, but I think the writing was on the wall for him after the spring game. The first chance we got to really see anything out of him, and since then I didn't hear a single good word about him. Not sure if it was a lack of development from the previous staff or if the light bulb would've never clicked on for him in the first place at this level, but either way it sucks to see that somebody with so much potential didn't pan out. skersfan
I am really surprised, as Coach Riley recruited him to Oregon State. I hate to see kids quit and leave. But that is the way it is. Hope he makes it back to Division 1 but doubtful. If they don't make it here, they seldom do much better when they leave. Quote Link to comment

I've heard people say this before, as if Stanton and Riley have some special connection because Riley recruited him. But nobody points out that Stanton chose not to play for Riley before, so doesn't that really mean there is no connection? I liked Stanton's attitude. It's too bad it didn't work out. Not sure if it was due to his injury or something else, but it seemed likely he'd not see meaningful playing time here so I'm not sad to see a schollie freed up. 1 Quote Link to comment
jmfb
For those who thought Stanton was the man, was in the mix, was going to play You were wrong Very evident by his lack of mention this spring and his poor play in spring game Lack of accuracy is not easy to fix Did you know he was a bust from the beginning or what I said here several times that he had accuracy issues, which are the most difficult to fix I also said since he didn't get in at the Spring game until very late and when he did he looked bad meant he wouldn't be playing QB here at NU Several disagreed with that and said all it was going to take was some QB whispering- that his Elite 11 pedigree proved he deserved a shot etc I countered that Harrison Becks QB camp ratings didn't mean much either and that JS wouldn't be taking any QB snaps at NU Long term- Riley will not value or chase down QBs who run well and don't have consistently accurate arms From what I saw he was definitely behind TA, Darlington and Broekemeier. Broekemeier is a much better QB than most are giving credit, he's no Matt Turman, kid can play. Im not impressed with Bush (his tilt on the ball is awkward) or Fyfe, but even at that, being 4th best and not making the 105- he was done a long time ago. Quote Link to comment
Blackshirt96
Not really suprised. He is for sure behind Tommy Armstrong, AJ Bush & Zack Darlington. He is most likely fighting with Fife & Broekemeier for 4th string. We also have 2 more QB's cominig in in the next class. If anything he made sacrifice for the team by making room for another schollarship player. He sounded like a great kid hope he does well for himself at another school. Quote Link to comment
ScottyIce
I believe I predicted this many moons ago. Best wishes to Johnny. Never said an ill word about Coaches or Nebraska, which is hard to come by these days with young men. Quote Link to comment
