Mavric
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA THEY HIRED AN HIGH SCHOOL ASSISTANT COACH TO BE A DIVISION 1 DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR The only reason he was a high school assistant last year was because he was still being paid his NU contract and he wanted to stay in Lincoln with his kids. You are acting like he has never been a D-1 assistant coach. He was widely considered the worst position coach on Pelini's staff. And now he's going to a Big Ten school as a coordinator. All that says is that people might not know what they're talking about. I like Bray but it's possible our LBs were better than people gave them credit for. Only 2 of our LBs that played this year had significant coaching under Els. And one of them would have transferred if we didn't get new coaches. So I'm not sure you can credit Els for anything that happened at LB this year. Well you can credit him for our horrible depth. I guess you can semantic "significant" how you want but by my count only one LB that played this year did NOT have at least a year under Els. Well ... I guess two with Gifford who played Safety last year but didn't play a lot this year. Quote Link to comment
teachercd
I just don't get why people are acting like Purdue just hires Corky from the hit 80's show Life Goes On Quote Link to comment
Pedro Guerrero
Real classy Husker fans. Els is a Nebraska-Omaha alum, has coached in Nebraska and with former NU players and coaches for most of his career. Now NU fans are crapping on him because he worked under Bo Pelini. Serious question, Did you stick up for born and raised Nebraska guys Bill Busch and Steve Pederson? Or were they fair game? 2 Quote Link to comment

zoogs
Credit/defend Els if you like. I'm all aboard the Bray wagon. This hire is good for Els, and it's good for Nebraska if it relates to buyout money at all. I don't think Pelini made very strong assistant personnel decisions, Els being one example, and this contributed to the stalling of the program that made Pelini's long-deserved ouster possible. All of these, I understand, are arguable, but I couldn't possibly be less interested in engaging further in those debates. A pre-emptive "agree to disagree" Quote Link to comment

zoogs
I'd throw in a "do Purdue fans know about the internet", but I gotta save that for the Iowa guys! Quote Link to comment

Pretty convenient, isn't it? Coaches don't get hired to comparable positions: See how much these coaches suck! Coaches get "promotions" when hired by other programs: They must be stupid for doing that! Nothing like turning up whatever narrative makes you feel better. X3 Quote Link to comment
Dagerow
So...if you are an average/poor coach at one school it means you can never be better at a new school??? Hmmmmm Nice Quote Link to comment

I just checked a few of their boards. Not much chatter. The talk is mostly negative..... Not just Els, but the new staff as well. Quote Link to comment
admo
Say what you will about Pelini, but I wonder if association and name dropping helped out in this case. Quote Link to comment
Savage Husker
I have heard some unflattering stories about Els and how he treated some players, people aren't unhappy he's gone. I've also heard he's the reason why Courtney Love transferred, regardless of the new coaching staff. Plus, Lavonte is a stud with or without Els, and if Els knew any better Lavonte would have started right away. Compton was an undrafted FA who is busting his ass and taking advantage of injuries, I credit Compton for a ton of heart and work ethic than anything. Els could turn out to be a good DC, but in no way do I miss watching him underdevelop our LBs anymore. 3 Quote Link to comment

I think originally Pelini assembled a pretty good football staff. For a guy who got his "long-deserved ouster", he put a few pretty salty teams on the field. Riley has another season like this past one, he may get his short-deserved ouster. Quote Link to comment

Ross Els was the reason Jared Alfalava was a bad kid and got booted from the team? Was he also responsible for that one LB transferring away from NU to Kentucky? Did Els tear up Rose-Ivey's knee before the 2014 season? Els was responsible for coaching the LB's in the scheme that Bo wanted him to. I'm not saying Els is a super awesome coach, but he can only do so much in a certain situation. He was also the recruiting coordinator, so yes, he is to blame for our LB depth this year. He recruited one LB in 2014 (who never made it to fall camp) after seeing Afalava and Brown leave. Quote Link to comment

So how much coaching did they get from him? Gifford was a scout team safety and Young was a true freshman. Quote Link to comment
