Repealing the ACA under Trump

When will we know the senates decision and what are the odds the new healthcare gets shot down?

The Senate will tear up this piece of trash and start from scratch. It's still important to pay attention.

I hope you're right but I have serious reservations if the senate is any more inclined than the house to do the right thing.

According to this the Senate Repubs won't even vote on the bill passed by the House but will instead craft their own bill. Definitely bears keeping an eye on and letting your Senators know where you stand.

What in the world have we let our government devolve to that this is such a perfect comparison? I've often chastised these POS's but this is really a failure of we the people. Things need to change.

But +1 for the pics.

The figure really shows why this is getting passed:

Here's that figure I want to show earlier in the thread. Thanks to knapplc for showing me how to get the image working.

Well on a purely selfish note, this actually gives me a sliver of hope that my personal situation may improve some, or at least not continue to get worse as fast. I'm not exactly sure what this chart shows exactly but I have serious doubts that my bottom dollar on healthcare is going to change for the better. They may shift the tax benefit from the poor to the top quintile but I really don't think that will overcome the cost increases for older people (like me) and/or those with pre-existing conditions (also like me). Sure I may get some pittance tax credit under this deal but with the additional amounts I am likely to be charged for premiums it's probably just out of the frying pan and into the fire. Seems the only ones who may actually benefit are the younger, healthier top quintile. Doesn't seem like the place to start if the goal is improving healthcare.

Representative Tom Cole, a Republican from Oklahoma, loves the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When he’s asked about public health funding, he often recites a favorite factoid: “You’re much more likely to die in a pandemic than in a terrorist attack.”

But before the House passed the American Health Care Act on Thursday, Cole — who chairs the appropriations subcommittee that oversees health spending — would not say how Congress would replace the nearly $1 billion in grants the bill would strip from the CDC and other federal agencies if it becomes law. Those grants, from what’s known as the Prevention and Public Health Fund, made up one-eighth of the CDC’s funding in 2016.

I, for one, am stunned that the Republicans wanted to do this. #LetsJustGiveThemAChance #EverythingIsPartisan #WhatAbout...

After seeing the list of people they've designated to work on the bill, I'm not sure I'm inclined to disagree with you.

I noticed what I consider to be about one serious healthcare mind in that group, with McConnell and a bunch of Tea Party types filling the rest of the spots. No moderates.

Zoogs-

You asked in status update what are the things that can be done other than UHC. Here's a few off the top of my tired but can't get back to sleep head.

1- Revamp the FDA. Make their focus reasonable safety and eliminate their profit protections for drug makers.

2- Numerous measures to get big business further from controlling what congress does. Campaign reform. Legislators transitioning into lobbying jobs. Letting industry groups determine policy. Blowup the aristocracy.

3- Maybe create some department that determines and enforces reasonable fees for everything. Premiums, procedures fees, maximum drug prices etc. A very big socialist undertaking for sure but not undeserved.

There are numerous measures that could be undertaken that dosent require that the money flows directly through our government. That is one of the main reasons I desire solutions that avoid UHC. Anywhere there is that huge amount of money you will have waste, greed and corruption. Get it out of government then have our government get it out of healthcare.

I realize with the state of our government that may be unachievable. But I also don't think putting our corrupt government in charge of the largest industry, medical care, is a great solution. It may be the best we can hope for but there are definitely many things that can be done. Maybe I'm dreaming that we should actually return to a government of the people, by the people, for the people. Crazy, I know.

I'll add - go back in time and really protect us from monopolies.

It's too late for that now.

I really think, and have thought for some time (before Trump), that we are going to find out that capitalism has awful, maybe fatal flaws if you don't leave certain protections in place. Having corporations in charge is not better than having a monarch or a dictator in charge. We're not to the point that it's that bad yet but that's the distant future I see and I don't get why people piss and moan so much about big government but are okay with mega-corporations doing whatever TF they want. Including getting people killed.
