Danny Bateman
Seems pretty clear that if nothing else, the government will remain closed through the end of the year. The new Congress takes the reins January 3rd, so from there a Democratic House can pass the funding bill that passed the Senate 100-0 just a few days ago and it will be back open for business. So Trump will obstinately closed the government over Christmas for funding for his border wall, which he won't ultimately get. In the meantime people may have had to go without a paycheck during the holiday season. Remember when this same guy rode into office on promises of his negotiating skills? 2 Link to comment

knapplc
After a day of listening to in-laws bitch about immigrants at the Southern border who just "need to do the correct things to enter the country," this sounds like a FANTASTIC idea. Paul Ryan, in his privilege, thinks he can just use the gym at taxpayers' expense while his party shuts down the government? Nope. Get in there and DO YOUR DAMNED JOB, the job we pay you to do. Quote Democrat wants to block Paul Ryan's gym access during government shutdowns A Democratic lawmaker has introduced legislation to close the gym and sauna reserved for members of Congress during a government shutdown. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Ill., announced the bill in a statement Sunday after the start of the latest partial government shutdown. “President Trump and Congressional Republicans’ refusal to pass and sign a clean continuing resolution to reopen government is an abdication of their responsibilities as elected officials," Foster said. "During the Trump Shutdown, however, Republican leadership continues to deem the Congressional spa used by Members of the House of Representatives to be ‘essential.’" Foster not only singled out President Trump, but also outgoing House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis. "Speaker Ryan continues to use the gym during this shutdown while federal workers face uncertainty over the holidays. The only essential task Members of Congress have during a government shutdown is negotiating an end to the shutdown,” Foster continued. “It’s time to tell President Trump and Congressional Republicans to end their Congressional perks during a shutdown and focus on getting the government up and running. We need to get federal employees back to work and to provide funding for priorities important to the American people.” Ryan, 48, who is retiring at the end of his term in January when Democrats will take control of the lower chamber, has received attention over the years for his dedication to a rigorous workout program known as P90X. 1 Link to comment

Moiraine
The law passed requiring a new budget to avoid a shutdown can’t be good for getting talented workers in the government. Nor can an idiot president who thinks middle class people who work for the government should have their raises cancelled. 2 Link to comment
Danny Bateman
For reference, I think this is what @Moiraine was talking about. Thoroughly shameful to take government employees raises away by fiat... but of course we were in good enough fiscal shape to bear a budget-busting massive tax cut for upper income folks and corporations, and the government is currently shut down because the president has dug in on his useless pet project. Their justification about fiscal sustainability is laughable. Everything this man does is out of cruelty, pettiness or rank dishonesty. 3 Link to comment
sho
Wait, wasn't he in the Middle East on Wednesday telling troops he wanted to give them a 10% raise? That he fought for it but was only able to get them 2.1? Then Friday he cancels that raise?? WOW Link to comment

BigRedBuster
I wonder why the republicans disrespect the military so much. And yet yet they support a draft dodger with bone spurs. Happy New Year. 3 Link to comment
BigRedBuster
I wonder how many of these retired generals and high intelligence officials are going to be vocal against Trump in the election. This is going to be very interesting. Link to comment
