ColoradoHusk
College athletic departments have so much money now they don't know what to do with it. Clemson just built a building with a nap room, barber shop, movie theater, indoor golf simulator, bowling alley, arcade, and laser tag course. I'm guessing we will keep up with the Jones and put in a few of those things. http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2016/08/clemsons_football_facility_to.html College athletic departments have to spend most of their revenue so they can remain non-profit organizations. The influx of cash the past decade is quite amazing, although some think that the TV rights bubble is about to burst. Quote Link to comment

It is the lifeblood of the entire program. Hire support staff "analysts" out the wazzoo. Send the football team to Rome with Harbaugh. Do whatever the hell you have to do to get the most talented kids in the country to choose Nebraska. The idea of a dual camp with michigan is interesting. I know NFL teams sometimes have joint preseason camps. I wonder if there's an NCAA rule against this kind of thing. I like this idea. However they need to decide on an identity on offense and defense first. It's what Pelini never seemed to be able to do particularly on offense. Quote Link to comment

DrunkOffPunch
What will this money be used to do? Men's and Women's Hockey teams Men's and Women's Lacrosse Men's Soccer and Women's Field Hockey Nebraska is woefully behind their B1G conference mates in the number of Olympic sports they fund. Personally, I would love to see men's soccer come to UNL. Quote Link to comment

Why pour money into non-revenue sports that no one really cares about? Spend it on recruiting for football, men's basketball, baseball, and women's volleyball. I would much rather have the football team have a full-time recruiting staff than waste money on lacrosse, soccer, and field hockey. Quote Link to comment
Landlord
Why pour money into non-revenue sports that no one really cares about? idk I think the hundreds of kids being given free educations and hoping to make the olympics or make a career out of their craft care about them. spurs1990
I would hope they would use a good share of the new funds on paying down their debts. IIRC, they owe on stadium and arena and other long term improvements, etc. The department has invested in facilities, etc. on a major level. If there are any real competitive 'shortcomings' they ought to address them but I believe our facilities are top notch and we are not suffering serious recruiting disadvantages at this point. Memorial stadium is as good as we could hope for realistically. Personally, back in the late 90s, as "America's team" (that was what I felt Nebraska was in many ways - we were enormously popular nationally), I would have loved to see them spend the really big bucks and build the "Husker Dome" and start our own national 'invitational' preseason bowl game in which our annual first game opponent would be the prior year's national champs or the next highest rated one if we were the champs). I also thought we could host a season end bowl game as well instead of always going far away to play on a given oppoent's local 'home' field. Instead, we spent considerable sums upgrading the old stadium and, not that it was bad or anthing, it is still an 'all kinds of weather' facility. Imagine all the tremendous games we could play indoors! Ticket holders would pay more for the indoor comfort controlled environment. Plus lots of other events could be utilizijng such a wonderful facility. Not many teams could match that and Nebraskans would love it. I loved the many many seasons of fun and the 'weather' factors but as times change, we have to be forward thinking. I also thought Warren Buffet could afford to write the check and pay for the entire thing from petty cash. He could surely give that much back to the State of Nebraska, couldn't he? The Husker Dome? Good lord.. Quote Link to comment

If the goal is to give out free education, who not simply dole out hundreds of scholarships to poor and first-generation college students? I would prefer that to creating some sports programs no one cares about so some kids playing sports no one cares about can attend school for free. If the goal is to help the athletic department and/or the university, it makes far more sense to plow the money back into the sports people care about and already generate revenue than to create and subsidize even more silly programs like bowling. Nobody in those sports mentioned would get free educations. There would not be full-ride athletic scholarships available in those olympic sports. Quote Link to comment

Can you tell me how much the bowling team is costing the athletic department? I hear more people outside the state talk about Nebraska bowling and volleyball than football. They win championships. 1 Quote Link to comment
