He seems to be setting the stage for what I've been saying to some of my Hispanic friends for awhile now. Someday, Hispanics/Latinos will be the new (supposed) oppressors of black people in this country. Not because they'll look white, but for other reasons.

Well written piece. Straight up reporting and interesting personal POV.  Not sure it addresses much about Larry Elder, but racism is a color-coded shortcut for exerting power over people, and I think some of that is hardwired straight from the animal kingdom. We could have a better world if we used our big brains to get over ourselves.

Keep in mind that the GOP is thrilled to over-promote Black conservatives because they think liberals will be afraid to criticize them....because they're Black, and Blacks will support them, because they're Black.

If you're a pandemic immunologist, it's pretty incumbent to be studying MERs and SARs and cross-species transmissions, as these already existed in the larger world. If you're awarding grants, this is a grant you would fund. If China is a likely source for the next outbreak -- as it has been in the past -- you encourage China to solve the problem using its considerable experience on the subject. If you don't fully trust China, you keep a pandemic team on the ground in China to observe and report --- you don't recall them as a waste of money from a previous administration. If the lab got sloppy or just unlucky, you're not afraid to look into it because that's something you need to learn. If you didn't see compelling evidence in 2020 and wanted to avoid a racial profiling of all Asians (yeah, that happened) you might make the statements Dr. Fauci made. 

 

Or you can pretend you aren't looking for headlines that undermine Dr. Fauci for pure partisan politics without reading the actual articles.

It’s almost as if you are Fauci’s/NIH’s COMM’s Director

 

Alternate theory is one could either admit to the public they are supporting gain of function research that they are allegedly funding and give compelling reasons to the public why that research is important, or don’t do the research you said you are not doing.  
 

One other possible thing to do is not dismiss a theory on how COVID originated.  
 

It was interesting to note you didn’t mention his past statements on gain of function research.  You must be pretending they don’t exist, possibly for pure party politics.

Reparations: Reparations for slave owners is nonsensical and I suspect was said tongue in cheek, but I did not realize England paid their slave owners when they abolished slavery in the 1830s. Crazy to think of people as property and that it still happens today.. In the US, a war was fought and the winners really do not need to do any sort of compensation. 

 

On the point of how Elder is criticized: why can't people point to specific policies, beliefs, comments and debate there merit, or lack thereof, without resorting to throwing out racist comments and accusations? Honestly racist accusations are thrown out so much and with such a broad brush these days, it's losing its punch. It only serves to stop the conversation.

Surely you know that's not the only accusation leveled at Larry Elder, a man who could become the governor of California with minimal votes, based on his position as a media figure with no administrative experience, using a public forum where he says lots of nonsensical things on a multitude of topics. So yes, people are pointing to specific policies, beliefs, and comments on merit, and lack thereof, and you are acting like race is the only card being played. That is also known as playing the race card, just on the other side of the table.
