@teachercd As a young professor, tenure is like strapping a time-bomb on your chest. You have 5 years to prove to the university you have a stable, productive, and independently-funded research program with the added charges of service and teaching expectations. The dream of becoming an old professor is secondary to the hope you can keep your job following your tenure review.

"Strapping a bomb to your chest!  Haha!  I bet it is!  I thought it was 7 years though, but still...it is amazing that the system is set up in such a "good ole boy" way...

Basically you are getting hazed for 5 years (or less!) and then once you are "in" you are pretty protected (right?).

My buddy is a Prof at PSU now...his last stop before that was in New Zealand. 

The difference between pre-tenured and tenured status is that colleges can choose to not renew the contract and terminate a professor without cause or reason during the probationary, pre-tenured period. The university has to demonstrate incompetence or unprofessional conduct before firing a tenured professor. So, tenure provides some job security, but it does not make you bullet-proof. You still get evaluated for promotions and raises; you just get the right to be fired with cause.

It's amazing how little discussion about SF is in that thread. Even less that's related to rumors or anything.

Actually, I do understand that there was some legitimate discussion going on in that thread. But as happens from time to time and much more recently, there are a few posters who want to beat the same dead horse in every thread. Nice! I've donated the last two rounds. I didn't used to when I was in college and joined about 10 years ago (aka broke) but it feels good to give back to something because you want to and not because you have to.

Yeah, I have a mortgage of a student loan situation going on and have to travel to see the lady but it's something I use a lot. Figured I can spare 10 dollars, again if everyone gives a dollar or two it goes quickly. 

I just donated too. Couldn't pass on that generous anonymous offer to match until the goal is reached.

Good to hear. I have family in Houston and they just got evacuated yesterday. Contact with them is now spotty, but we're pretty sure they're safe. Just have to hope their house is left mostly unscathed.

If they need a place to stay and can get here, my place in Corpus is open to them. If it comes to that, send me a DM. My department is looking to mobilize for the redcross to provide needed mental health work. I'm also hoping to do some research on disaster psychology. There's so much to do to help folks out. 

Thank you, that's awesome. They have options through work, and there are families around on higher ground (what there is of it in Houston), so they should be OK. They're biggest problem will be property loss.

Yeah, it's not supposed to really hit until Friday I think. The predictions keep changing about how bad Southern Texas is supposed to be hit. Right now it's just the university that's going to be evacuated. We'll see if they move it up to the city. It sucks though because having only lived here for 2 weeks I haven't really had time to think about an emergency kit or anything.

We got married in the CO mountains.  We then had an informal party in my hometown and our current home (her hometown) for friends/family to celebrate.  For both parties, we rented out a pavilion at a park and had BBQ catered and coolers of beer.  It worked great!

@RunMickeyRun02 I agree. For me it's the intolerance of other opinions that drives me nuts. The thought that you must be an idiot to think differently than I do.  I like discussion, I like talking to people who think nothing good is coming from Riley, but I also want to have room for my experiences and opinion.
