Missed this in all the hub-bub but it looks like McCloud, the stud QB from James Madison is in the portal again.

 

3400 yds 32/9 + another 300ish rushing yards plus 8 more TDs. IIRC he's got one year left and I wonder if he follows his coach to IU. Would be a good get for sure.

Does anybody actually think we will get a so called top tier transfer qb from that list?  I remember HC Matt Rhule saying it would cost 1.5 to 2 million to have a good qb but that might be to low to draw them here.  I would be shocked if Nebraska does get a great qb with NFL potential or is willing to spend.  Nebraska probably will say we aren't about spending and more about developing.

I bet we try and I don’t think the spending is the biggest problem.  I would be surprised if a “top tier “ wanted to come here.  If I had to guess I’d say a solid next tier or younger guy with multiple years of eligibility and no past turnover problems.  Just a gut feeling.

I think they are going to have to figure out a way to balance NIL and transfer rules.  I don't know that this kind of "free for all" exists anywhere in sports.

 

In reality, this is how life works.  But even that has gaps.  Often when you're making this type of money there are rules/clauses or even stuff like "non competes".

I think the only way to fix it is to make the athletes actual employees.  That way there can be negotiations on contracts.  You want the big deal?  Sign a 3/4/5 year contract.  Want to bet on yourself?  Go for a one-year contract.  But then at least the schools know who is a free agent each year.

This sounds similar to what Gundy has talked about.  The athlete has almost no skin in the game.  If I'm being fair, it has been the exact opposite forever.

 

What you're saying makes sense to me.  They would have to create a hard line between NIL and the institution, but saying there isn't one is silly anyway.  I've also wondered about limiting what's available if you transfer, but I think that is too open and would just create more issues.

I don't know what limits you could put on it.  But I've also thought they could make it so if you signed somewhere you were locked in for two years.  That would at least cut it in half.  But I'm sure there would just be a bunch of waiver applications.
