sd'sker
i guess i poorly framed the topic. first, i think of trap games as games you expect to easily overcome, but then find yourself in an unexpected dogfight. but i guess my issue was how tough should we expect this game to be and what are our potential pitfalls. i was feeling extremely confident to begin with, and still expect to win by a fairly large margin, but i have this nagging feeling in my gut that this game might be more of a struggle than i was initially expecting. I think you're pretty close, but it'll be one of those deals where we'll have to sit through about 3 quarters of anguish, and pull away in the 4th... Quote Link to comment
The King
I think the first quarter is close. Then they get waxed the next 3 quarters. Quote Link to comment
ladyhawke
We have to be prepared for any and all games, trap or no trap. We cannot dismiss any games this year. We just need to go to UCLA, play our game, win THEN get ready for the next game. IN THAT ORDER. We have to take it one game at a time. Quote Link to comment
NUance
Since everyone says this is NOT a trap game, it's a trap game. 1 Quote Link to comment
NoLongerN
"Trap" is probably not the word. I would say the word would be "upset". That is a possibility. However, we are early in the season and hungry. No "trap" or "upset". I expect us to steam role this team 60-14. We need a big win for many reasons. Get 'ur done! Quote Link to comment
knapplc
We just need to show up ready to play. Too often we show up ready to win, and we fail to play. Prepare for a four-quarter battle, do your homework on these guys, know your game plan and we should be OK. Take these guys lightly and we could be upset. They have athletes. 2 Quote Link to comment
VectorVictor
I expect us to steam role this team 60-14. We need a big win for many reasons. Get 'ur done! Our defense, historically, has had problems with mobile QBs. The kid at UCLA is a mobile QB that can play, there's no doubt about that. And for as much as people want to discredit UCLA for their first half against Rice, UCLA shut them down in the second half, defensively. Kind of like how Nebraska needed a half to shut down Southern Mississippi's offense. And just like Nebraska, UCLA had special teams woes throughout the game. I know you mean well, but statements like this don't help the cause, especially if any of the kids come here and see lines like that. --- All of the hubris about blowing out UCLA should be dialed back a notch or two. At the very least, we're inviting some bad juju with these blowout predictions, and considering our defense hasn't been up-to-snuff for a while, this could very well become a shootout rather than a stomping. In deference to the original question, yes, this is a trap game. And the definition of a trap game doesn't just mean you're overlooking someone in spite of a forthcoming opponent--it means you're overlooking an opponent because of hubris, lack of work ethic, or lack of respect for the opponent as well. The more we post about how we expect a 30, 40, or 50 point blowout against UCLA, the more this becomes a 'trap game'. Quote Link to comment
Comish
The time zone excuse is lame. But no one is mentioning it is on grass...........that can be a bit of an adjustment............. Quote Link to comment
HuskerShark
I think we will find out on Saturday that our opponent for the season opener is a much better team than the one we are about to play. Quote Link to comment
nuhuskeralum
I really don't think there will be a let down, there were plenty of mistakes in the opener to keep them humble. I think we win but these are better athletes than S Miss and we don't know what to expect from a new coaching staff, but I still hope we crush them. Quote Link to comment
RockyMountainOySker
Biggest scare I have is a potential drop off following a very well executed game by the offense. I don't see that happening since it's just the beginning of the season but you never know. We do tend to play flat footed after big victories (I wouldn't classify beating Southern Miss as big, we just played well). All of this was probably said already, I failed to read the thread . The Maudfather
Most "trap games" are when a team is supposedly looking and preparing more toward the following week...that's just not the case here. Quote Link to comment
zeWilbur
The time zone excuse is not lame because it is a prime time game. You can only adjust practice schedules so much to offset it but when the game ends it will feel like 1:30~2:00 in the morning to our guys. That is a big deal. Quote Link to comment
nuhuskeralum
Were picked by 5.5 by Vegas, according to them we are closely matched and it's supposed to be a battle. If our D doesn't step up we could end up not liking the game very much.. I guess its only a trap game for us Koolaid drinkers. Quote Link to comment
