Bill says 2 former teams wish they could come back..

Recommended Posts

Bill Snyder talked with someone who can talk for the whole school on wanting to go back?

I think he is assuming based on what he sees.

I would assume he would think Nebraska and Colorado.

I have zero interest in going back.

X2 I am done with the Big 12. They can all go down with the Texass ship just like when UT killed the SWC.

"Nebraska's move to the Big Ten has not helped its recruiting at all. If anything, it has hurt quite a bit. The two-year drop of 28 percent compared to the '11-12 classes is one of the biggest in the country, and coach Bo Pelini's perpetual hot-seat status doesn't help either. Nebraska is a weak state for high school talent, and Nebraska has not been nationally relevant in any way since current recruits began elementary school."

This is from an article written in 2014. Our recruiting hasn't improved since then.

We are an outlier in the conference... the team furthest away from the center. The worst part is that the B1G conference put us in a division (west) with other teams that are mostly bottom dwellers. The conference did us no favors in doing this. Our division is routinely called the worst division in the power 5.

Teams in the other division (east)... Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State etc... geographically have access to the recruiting hotbeds within the conference and players recruited will know that their families can watch them play.

All of these things should be something to consider... and would be things that "Bill", great coach that he is, surly sees.

With that said I don't think we will return to the big 12. Too many ego's involved.

The biggest factor in Nebraska's poor recruiting is that Bo hated the process. Having a coach that truly understands the importance of the process is already changing recruiting for the better.

It hasn't improved the results so far.

We don't know what this years recruiting class will look like account it hasn't happened yet. Hopefully it will improve.

But we simply cannot continue to recruit only 4 or 5 elite athletes every year and expect to play at a high level... especially when other teams are routinely recruiting 15-20 elite athletes every year. When that happens year after year after year, it quickly adds up to a huge disparity in team talent (athletic ability).

We have had tons of time for improvement to take place.

I thought you were just talking about Riley. Since you are talking about everyone since Tom left, you can't lump in two horrible recruiters that are responsible 13 of those years with one good recruiter and one who has a good start on recruiting bu t the jury is still out on him.

The likelihood of Nebraska ever returning to the Big 12 is extremely small to non-existent. With that said, in situations or decisions like these I think it is prudent to weigh the pros & cons.

Pros of Big Ten conference membership for Nebraska:

  • $$$$$ Best conference network, media rights setup/team-by-team payout among all the Power 5 conferences by a wide margin.
  • Conference members for the most part work for the betterment of the entire conference on an equal footing.
  • Excellent academic reputation.
Cons of Big Ten conference membership for Nebraska:
  • This isn't the same Big Ten conference Nebraska assumed it was joining in 2011. (See Maryland & Rutgers). Yes, the conference gained monetarily by these two additions, but the conference as a whole was weakened by these two additions in that the bigger name universities do not play each other on a more regular basis.
  • Partial loss to recruiting footprint in Texas.
  • A much heavier travel burden on fans for away games.
Pros of Big 12 conference membership for Nebraska:
  • Alliances with universities dating back well over century. (See Big 8)
  • Oklahoma vs Nebraska rivalry. Enough said.
  • Shorter travel distance for fans for away games.
Cons of Big 12 conference membership for Nebraska:
  • Conference doesn't make decisions to the betterment of the the conference as a whole, rather the more powerful universities put pressure on or drown-out the voices of the smaller institutions. (See Texas + Ego)
  • $$$ No conference network, and a weak to sub-par media rights deal.
  • West Virginia. Very nice people in West Virginia, but let's be honest, it's an outlier in an otherwise Great Plains conference footprint.
Is Nebraska going to return to the Big 12?

No. However, if the old Big 8 schools want to restructure a newer modern day Great Plains/Mountain West conference, where they manage to get Texas to agree to act fairly and on an equal footing with all conference members & create a conference network with the backing of ESPN or Fox....than we can talk.

Two likely scenarios:

  • Big 12 expands within the next year and adds two teams. Who those are right now are anybody's guess?
  • Keep an eye on this one: Grant of Rights deals be damned, the Big Ten jumps on the Big 12's vulnerability and poaches two or a few Big 12 teams before the Big 12 conference can expand, thus creating the nation's first Super Conference and balancing out the Big Ten West division. Best options for expansion being Kansas (for basketball), Oklahoma (national brand), Texas (national brand + huge recruiting footprint).

There is no NU/OU rivalry and hasn't been for many, many years. OU declined to keep that going when the Big 12 was formed.

You cant take Texas without Baylor and Tech, The Texas legislature wouldn't allow it. This is well know in Texas and is a big reason why Tech and Baylor got in the Big 12 in the first place, originally the Big 8 only wanted Texas I think.

Plus considering how Texas wrecked the SWC and now the Big 12 I don't think they are even on the front offices radar for expansion.

I would wager it's KU, OU, or an eastern school who we don't know yet, maybe Pittsburgh or Boston College are in line to get plucked next.

There must be a playbook passed around to media members listing the topics most likely to generate "buzz" in an otherwise boring offseason. Somewhere on that list is "mention Nebraska returning to the Big XII." There's probably some estimate of how many tweets, angry calls, letters to the editor or whatever they'll get.

We get this every year. It's boring and completely unrealistic.

Also in that playbook:

-Urban Meyers health status

-Jim Harbaugh's top ten tweets

-Ole Miss recruiting updates
