Bill says 2 former teams wish they could come back..

I see no reason why Nebraska would want to go back to the Big 12, but I wonder if there is any pressure coming from the Big 10. What exactly have we provided to raise the prestige of the conference? We have been middle of the pack athletically in the major sports and we lose our AAU status right as we enter the conference. When I look at the reasons why Maryland and Rutgers were brought in, they don't align with what we provide or were told when we joined. Our football program seems to have lost ground since we joined and basketball still doesn't draw any excitement outside the state. This is just me trying to find a reason why these rumors might be true.

You are meaning just in football correct? Cause last time I checked, we have been successful in volleyball, GBB, softball, at times in baseball and both track teams seem to be doing fairly well.

As far as the AAU, we would have lost it no matter what. We had been fighting to stay in it for 10 years prior to losing it. It was a no-win situation.

Maryland and Rutgers were brought in because of TV sets, that is pretty much it.

I mean in sports that generate revenue for the conference - football and basketball. Volleyball has been incredibly successful, unfortunately, that doesn't really mean much in the financial picture. It's a hard sell to say that Nebraska creates a lot extra money when the contracts are renewed.

I know the AAU thing is completely out of our control and it was inevitable, but I would hear all the time how every Big 10 school was an AAU member.

TV sets were exactly the reason why Rutgers and Maryland were added, which makes me wonder why we were added just a couple years before. It definitely wasn't for the number of TV sets in the state. We were told it was because of the prestige the program. That prestige is not trending up right now.

The way it was explained to me they figure pretty much everyone in Nebraska will be watching football, roughly 1.8 million people. Now a lot fewer in the new york/jersey area folks give a poop about Rutgers, but you take that much smaller percentage times the much higher population and it works out to about push, same deal with DC. That takes care of the eyeballs on screen aspect.

This was from an article I read when Ruggy and Mary were added. How much merit it has to it I don't know but it was an interesting perspective.

My personal feeling is that they get to sell BTN to every cable package in the NY / DC area whether they give a flying turd about the terps or the knights. That's where the money comes from.

Maybe that's why they also didn't offer us as sweet a deal as Rugters and Maryland.

As for not living up to expectations, well yeah, that sucks for them, but who could they have got in our place? They tried for decades to get Notre Dame and they wanted nothing of it. I doubt they are trying to nudge us out of the conference. We can't be doing any more damage to the conference than say Purdue or Indiana.

Just my 2 cents.

Thing is, it isn't just about the people living in Nebraska. Think how many HuskerBoard members don't even live here. They're all over the country, because nice as Nebraska is, it's also a good place to be from - as in, there are a lot nicer places to live, economically & climatologically, than here. There's a Husker Fan diaspora every year. For at least the first generation, those folks tend to stay Husker fans and follow the team. TV is how they keep in touch.

What smoke? This comes up every year when the call-in radio shows having nothing else to talk about.

Probably just like in a marriage, when you're in a committed relationship & everything should be safe, you still should constantly be wooing your spouse, I suppose there's an argument to be made that the Big Ten & Nebraska should constantly be trying to reaffirm their commitment to each other. I think we do that.

I completely agree with you guys. I just feel with this stuff that where there's smoke there's fire so I was just trying to think of a scenario that might make sense. It doesn't make any sense for Nebraska to want out so I figured if anything it had to be the other way around.

Mods- can you put all three threads of NU wants back into the big12 into the rumor section, where it will keep the "OU to join the Big10 by June 2016" thread company?

There must be a playbook passed around to media members listing the topics most likely to generate "buzz" in an otherwise boring offseason. Somewhere on that list is "mention Nebraska returning to the Big XII." There's probably some estimate of how many tweets, angry calls, letters to the editor or whatever they'll get.We get this every year. It's boring and completely unrealistic.

Also in that playbook:

-Urban Meyers health status

-Jim Harbaugh's top ten tweets

-Ole Miss recruiting updates

Unsurprisingly, I don't think a lot of fans really care all that much about B1G media days, particularly Nebraska fans. This was recently corroborated by Sipple. I always find 'what sells' conversations intriguing, and he said in the case of Nebraska fan, columns on the Huskers' 2nd string center and their prospects going forward get more traffic than columns from B1G media days.

I think media members are trying to find anything to make the media days worthwhile to some extent, even if it means writing stories that will do little else but spark debate. I think actually covering media days is more beneficial for the media than it is fans because it gives the writers/sportscasters background info. on teams heading into the season that they can keep in mind for future stories once conference play starts.

So you're saying media days are more for the media....makes sense.

An oversimplification. What I'm saying is I don't think most fans really care about media days unless it is something about their team

In fact, though it is an easy conclusion to reach, I bet these media days will be by far and away the worst in terms of viewers and web traffic for Nebraska based stations/outlets.

And yes, playing Purdue and Indiana really sucks compared to playing Kansas and Iowa State. But that's only because it feels more familiar right now. If OU and KU were in the Big Ten (fingers crossed) I would expect no more talk of missing the B12 or wanting to leave the B1G.

This is my wish - OU and Kansas coming to our West Division of the Big 10. I wouldn't mind adding Missouri and Okie State if we were to add 4 - help me to see the Husker wt me living in Tulsa. I really think the Big 10 blew it by adding Maryland and Rutgers. TV sets yes, but zero star power. OU in football (and basketball) and Kansas in BB would have been a big gain. I think we wasted 2 spots wt Ma and Rgrs. Could have gone after Cinci, UConn, Louisville, WVA, VT or even GT (if you want a southern footprint). Maybe Cinci doesn't bring in more TVs wt OSU in the state, but UConn would bring some of those NY TVs and the others would bring more competitive teams to the conference.

Lots of schools that have shown less then us in the big10.

If it were up to me, you couldn't pay me enough to go back to what the Big 12 is now - especially in football. WVU... KState... IA State... Kansas. NAW. I will say though... I feel like if we were... WVU would probably be one of those teams that gives us fits. Just a fleeting thought. Hard Pass.

National championship for volleyball is a little higher than "middle of the pack", don't you think?

Nebraska also took indoor and outdoor track, but if you only count sports with a ball in them, your point stands.

But those sports don't generate revenue and we all know that this is what it is all about. Again, I don't think this is actually happening, just trying to see why this would actually happen if it's true.

Knapp, I agree more and more with you. The AAU wasn't a good fit for Nebraska because most of our research comes in areas that aren't measured by the AAU. We are still doing tremendous work in other fields. I am not denying that. I was only saying that the Big 10 loved to say that all of it's members were also in the AAU.

I also probably shouldn't have said where there is smoke, there is fire, but it just seemed like such an idiotic rumor that no would actually make that up right? You would have to be a really old guy losing his mind to come up with something like that.
