Colin Kaepernick: dbag or not?

Wow..willing to ignore 70,000 people because one guy takes an unpopular, yet legal, stance.

Overreaction much?

Hmmmm....interesting take.

Let's just say I agree with Santa Clara's Police Chief :thumbs

That's fine.

I just find it odd that the idiot protests against a group and then wears a Castro shirt around insulting many people. But, when the group he insults reacts...."OMG.....You're over reacting".

I'm sorry, if you insult an entire group and they react, I don't consider it "over reacting".

Not escorting Kapernick to midfield would be warranted and not over reacting. Not keeping idiots off the field to protect the 103 other players that stand for the anthem is over reacting, yes. Not to mention keeping people from fighting, excessive drinking, and inspecting bags for bombs.

If people are really this upset about CK, the best thing to do is ignore it. Take away his voice...

Naaa...there are times when it's worth pointing out someone is an idiot.

BRI talked about this up there ^^^^. A lot of this talk is politicized by the Police Union. They likely won't refuse to provide security. They're making their voice heard, stating their displeasure with the situation.

"We want people to know that we are displeased with the situation and with his stance, but will continue to provide the services we're obligated to and support free exercising of first amendment rights" goes over a million times better though, doesn't it?

"I want people to know that I don't support a lot of what is going on in the country right now, but I will continue to stand for the U.S. National Anthem as a show of respect" goes over a million times better though, doesn't it?

If its all about what "goes over" better, I think the whole point is being missed.

On a somewhat related note, I don't understand the relationship between protesting the perceived injustices towards Black Americans by law enforcement and wearing a shirt depicting a world leader (Castro) who has been one of the biggest violators of human rights in the Western Hemisphere over the last century. Why is Kaepernick making these associations?

It looks like CK's mom has spoken out against his actions. It's unfortunate if this sets off a trend in the sporting world as America is already divided in the political realm, as well as in the entertainment industry. When I watch a sporting event, I don't want to have to think about someone trying to make a dumb political statement.

As for some of our political figures, when it comes to the questions is CK a douchebag or not, it appears that Obama and more on the left are defending CK, while Trump and more on the right think he is. Nobody is saying he doesn't have the right to voice his opinion, but I am frankly surprised that Obama did not come out and say "I disagree with anyone not standing up for the flag that so many brave men and women have died for, but I also recognize that in this country CK has the right to protest and demonstrate the freedom of speech."

I think it's the sporting world's commercial faux patriotism that really needs examination. But athletes have a platform; why would it be unfortunate for more socially conscious ones to use it to express themselves? Whether or not you agree with their opinions, or methods of expression.

And this is CK's biological mother, who gave him up for adoption six weeks after he was born. Who, by the way, said that while she doesn't agree with his choice of method:

Do you make any posts without being intentionally misleading?

I think it's misplaced becuase it's not the federal government in the middle of these issues. If you want to talk about not standing up in Minnesota for its flag or Louisiana or even missouri, that would make more sense. But I get that he is trying to call attention to a serious issue.

The one thing I don't get is how this was ever construed as an attack on the military. I don't pledge to the flag or stand for the anthem as a show of support for the military. To accuse him of attacking the armed forces with his choice of protest strikes me as at least unfair and more likely it's a dishonest tactic to divert attention from the actual underlying issue of real and or perceived racism among certain police units.

So, in short: he's not a douche bag, but I don't agree with his premise or condone his tactic.
