It's been a while since we have reviewed these claims in a full fact check. So has anything happened to make Trump's falsehoods any more true?

 

Essentially, Trump says that under his watch, auto assembly plants have been added at an unprecedented rate in Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina and possibly other states - "they're being built all over and expanded at a level that we've never seen before." He attributes this to his jawboning of countries such as Japan and Germany - and his threat of higher tariffs.

 

So we checked in with the experts at the Center for Automotive Research, a group that assiduously tracks this information.

No surprise. Trump is making stuff up.

Kristin Dziczek, vice president at CAR, said there have been four new auto assembly plants announced since Trump took office - three in Michigan, one in Alabama. Here are the details, with the information provided by Dziczek.

- Navya, a French company, announced 2017. This is the company's first North American production facility, which will roll out 25 of its driverless Arma shuttles by the end of the year. Kits will be brought from France initially, but Navya is under contract with U.S. suppliers to provide parts. (Saline, Mich., 50 jobs.)

- Toyota, a Japanese company, in a joint venture with Mazda, announced 2017. Toyota Motor Corp. has abandoned plans to build Corolla sedans at a joint assembly plant it is building in cooperation with Mazda in Huntsville, Ala., and instead will build an as-yet-unannounced crossover there. (4,000 jobs.)

The president wants to present a good-news story to his supporters. But the reality is different.

Only four new auto plants have been announced since Trump took office, and investment in auto manufacturing was higher under the last three years of Barack Obama's presidency than the first three of Trump's. Three of the four states name-checked by Trump do not have new plants. And there's no evidence that Trump's threat of tariffs led to more auto investment.

I was listening to stuff earlier and as the resident Trump supporter, I wondered about your continued support for Trump.

 

Do you continue to support him because you earnestly believe he's good at his job? Or do you dislike all politicians and think they're all likely to screw you over and therefore you might as well support the guy who professes to hate who you hate?

It's an experience fallacy that pops up every now and again.  It means only football players should be coaches and ADs, only tailors should decide what we wear etc etc.

 

Well, we have a choice then between a someone with a law degree who only practiced for a short time, but has years of experience writing laws.

 

Or.....a man who has failed multiple times in business and graduated with such horrible grades that he refuses to let anyone know what they are.

Probably. I don't blame people for being that jaded. Even if it is kind of sad for so many people to be so driven by grievance.

Guys this article isn't entirely accurate, and Trump while exaggerating is partly right. 

 

There are more than 4 auto facilities being built renovated/expanded. FCA basically built a brand new facility for the next generation Grand Cheeroke in Detroit by adding on a massive amount to an idled engine plant. Ford bought the dilapidated Michigan station and land around it to house new offices for the EV and Autonomous driving teams in Detroit. Many suppliers have purchased or expanded their facilities in the Detroit metro and an old race track in the middle of the metro has been converted into a warehouse for shipping parts into assembly plants. Detroit is (and has been) on an upswing for the last 5 or 6 years.

 

That being said... GM has closed several plants and is shutting down their propulsion lab in Pontiac, a city in the metro that is already hurting badly from decades of GM closures. Also, Ford and GM both have laid off quite a few white collar workers.

I frequently drive by Trump/Pence and James signs here and wonder if anyone actually put up the James signs because they legitimately wanted to support him or if they just give them away together as two for one specials. The James signs just feel so tagged on.

 

You also see it in the ads here. It's all either pro-Peters ads and attack ads of either candidate. The pro-James ads are conspicuously absent. It's like they know he's just a generic R and they won't move votes. 

 

Gotta like that the Trump campaign has pulled all spending here, too.

I don't know how strictly they are defining factory, but Nikola announced building a hydrogen fuel cell truck plant in AZ last year.  This year some Taiwanese co announced a semiconductor plant.  After experiencing the opposite in the Midwest for many years it feels like I'm in an economic garden of Eden.
