The Trump Economy

With the unemployment numbers so low, are there even enough workers to add jobs at the pace of Obama's second term?

This was my first thought when I read the tweet.  I honestly don't think we have the people to keep up that kind of job creation pace.  And...remember, we don't want anyone coming here from another country that wants a job.

My thoughts as well.

We just had a meeting this week to discuss ways to hire and retain employees given how competitive the market is right now. The job creation numbers had to tapper off at some point. Although some of it could be related to the economy slowing down. It's hard to really know, but the comparison to Obama's second term seems disingenuous.

Well guys my Trump supporting parent says today, "Trump's an a$$ but has accomplished so much:  Jobs, stock market, meeting with leaders that the US hasn't met with for a long time.  There is so much Trump hate that anything happening on a positive note is being ignored."

This is a person who studied history and raised us with high morals and undying patriotism.  A veteran who was from a family of people who served.  Who was drafted for Vietnam and although he felt Nixon was hiding the facts about the war he served.  This is a man who says he cant' handle athletes who haven't served disrespecting the flag.  He claims his knowledge of history is exactly why he feels the way he does.

I have so many questions for him, but he and I are not allowed to talk about it directly as he hates conflict - this is all the detail coming from my mother.  My questions to her were:

  • If respecting the flag is important how does he feel about the leader of the land tearing apart veterans and long term civil servants who have served a lifetime because they come forward and tell the truth?
  • If the stock market is important what has the trend been and where is it headed?  Does he monitor the interest rates and fed?  Does he understand the danger we're in?  (also - he has refused to invest in the stock market for 40 years)
  • What leaders has he met with that we haven't for a long time?  Putin?  Kim?  Does he know why we have not met with them - does he believe NATO that was created after WWII to ensure that human rights and dictatorships were best attacked by a union of democratic nations?  How does he feel about alienating countries like Canada, France, UK and Germany among others?
  • How would he feel about Malia Obama serving in the WH and travelling to represent the US overseas?  With no degree or history or training in US Government and no security clearance?
  • How would he feel about it if Obama owned a Basketball team that was performing poorly and had minimal attendance until he was elected - then their performance remained poor, but the games were suddenly sold out, and tickets were sold mostly to members of other country's government?  And that after a few months they also raised the price on tickets?
  • How would he feel if Obama during the 2012 campaign reached out to Portugal and said, "hey I know that we said we'd give you some money because you're in trouble, but before I hand that over I'd like you to share some info publicly on John McCain.
  • Why does he think so many lifetime military veterans who served this president have quit?  Why has there been so much turnover with all his staff?
  • If he has nothing to hide, why is Trump refusing to release taxes, info, testimony, allow his past and current staff to speak to congress?
  • Has the role of Congress and the Court changed in the last 3 years from what it was the last 100?

She refuses to talk to him because she doesn't know history and has no interest in politics.  She also says all politicians lie and it's ok to have different opinions about things, why is everyone so mean to each other and just repeat the same things over and over?

I'll give you one guess on the network their tv is trained to 9-12  hours a day.

Heartbroken.  It's not going to get better.

My condolences.

My mom is similar. My hope is maybe she'll see through Fox and the GOP eventually since she once listened to Rush but did eventually see through his lies.

My parents now have a proudly displayed “Trump 2020” Flag hanging in their front yard.

I walked in the other day and he said, “I’m surprised you came in this house because of my flag”.

almost didn’t hear him because Fox News was blaring so loud.

Thanks Trump - you have outspent Obama's first years.  An amazing accomplishment.   Fiscal conservative he is not contrary to his campaign pledges.    Obama had to rescue the economy.  Trump had no such crisis when he took office.

It shocked the nation and spawned an entire political movement that led to a shift in the political balance. Spending during Obama’s first few years in office was at a level never seen previously in our nation’s history except during the height of WWII. It provoked the Tea Part counter-movement, as “STOP SPENDING” bumper stickers propped up across the nation. Fast-forward eight years later, and under Trump and Republicans, spending is now even higher, with a much healthier economy and job market.

During the first 33 full months of the Trump administration – from February 2017 through October 2019 – the federal government has spent roughly $11.762 trillion, according to tabulations of monthly statements from the Treasury Department. If you flash back to the equivalent 33-month period during the beginning of Obama’s first term – from February 2009 through October 2011 – spending was approximately $10.3 trillion. That was the period of all the bank bailouts and the stimulus. That was the period where we saw the expansion of welfare and unemployment benefits. Yet, today, outlays are 13.2 percent higher than the infamous spending binge.

To be fair, if you factor in inflation, the percentage increase is not nearly as dramatic. Using OMB tables expressing the spending figures in constant 2012 numbers, according to my rough calculation, Obama’s tab for the first 33 months would be $10.385 trillion and Trump’s at $10.722. That would be only a 3.2 percent increase. However, a Republican presidency increasing spending in any way over the catastrophic levels of Obama is indefensible and demonstrates why we will never “conserve” anything under the Republican Party and the political system of the one-way ratchet.

During 2009-2011, we were still languishing from the worst recession in memory. Unemployment was rampant, and many more public services were being used, as revenue to the Treasury plummeted. Contrast that to today, with one of the best job markets post-WWII, and it’s simply inexcusable for spending to be this high under a Republican administration with trifecta control of government for the first two years. Whereas unemployment during 2009-2011 hovered between 9 and 10 percent, under Trump, it has dropped from 4.7 to 3.6 percent.

Let’s look at the revenue side of the ledger. Whereas spending (in non-adjusted terms) has been 13.2 percent higher during the first 33 months of the Trump administration relative to Obama, revenue has been 47 percent higher. We only collected $6.3 trillion in revenue during the period from February 2009 to October 2011, as opposed to $9.3 trillion over the equivalent period under Trump. As such, we did rack up more debt under Obama for the same interval of time ($4.3 trillion as opposed to $3.1 trillion), but the debt today is much more indefensible. It’s simply astounding to be spending this amount of money with virtually full employment.
