Wise words from one of the smartest guys I know.

Quote

The economic devastation that is now playing out before our eyes is not caused by the Wuhan flu virus. In the last 21 days, approximately 162,000 Americans have died. Of that number, 150 were killed by the Wuhan virus. If governments at all levels had done nothing, other than eliminating regulatory barriers to the deployment of already-existing medicines, would the virus have killed more Americans? Yes, that is what flu bugs do. Would it have killed more than the 13,000 or so who have died from this year’s seasonal flu virus? Who knows? More than the estimated 80,000 who were killed by the flu in the U.S. just two years ago? I doubt it: world-wide, it has killed only a little more than one-tenth that number.

The answers to those questions are speculative, but this is not: by dictating a virtual cessation of economic activity, government at all levels, but especially state and local, are causing an economic collapse the likes of which, if it continues, we have not seen since the Great Depression, if ever. When has such a government-caused disaster comparably devastated a non-socialist country? Not often. The inflation of the Weimar Republic comes to mind.

Here is a prediction: the deaths of Americans caused by the Wuhan flu bug will be dwarfed by the suicides committed by people whose life’s savings have been wiped out, whose businesses have been bankrupted, whose jobs have been lost, and whose prospects have been blighted by the insane overreaction we now see from our governments. That overreaction must stop. Right now. Before it is too late, if it is not too late already.

1) This guy sounds like a complete idiot.

2) Per board rules, if you're going to post content like this, you need to link to the source.

3) Stop disseminating disinformation.

4) Listen to the experts at the CDC, local health centers and disease experts, not some rando blogger with an opinion

I dunno.  I don't know where that quote came from.  But I don't disagree with it.

The Covid-19 virus may end up killing a lot of people.  Or the soon to arrive warm weather may cause it to peter out.  Hard to say exactly what the death toll may be.  But the economic toll is a certainty.  The disruption to our economy is massive.  It's right up there with 911 and the 2008 financial crisis.

So what part of Thurston's quote to you folks have a problem with?  Or was it his silly into about the smartest guys he knows?  (I mean, clearly he doesn't hang with very smart people.  He's an HB regular!)

Minimizing a pandemic as a "bug," equating it to the flu (it is much more deadly), minimizing the deaths that will come from this by saying "the flu kills thousands" and basically saying "so what?"

The complaint that government is inflicting a disaster on us coupled with the insinuation that it's unnecessary/overblown, which is in direct conflict with every single virologist/pandemic expert in the world. That's just criminally stupid right there, IMO. It's misinformation and completely unproductive to the reality we're facing.

There's very little common sense in it. And the guy who wrote it is a lawyer, not a physician. He's no more an expert than I am, and therefore not someone to be propped up as "smart" in this instance.

The "experts" in California have predicted up to 56% of the total population will be infected with the Wuhan virus. Note well "up to" or "could" in the Governor's letter.

That prediction is all based upon assumptions. Change the assumptions and the prediction changes. It probably assumes a long life of the virus on surfaces and a high R factor. Also, no effective treatments.  Just watch. Using the right drugs will stop this thing cold.

One other point that I learned from my superior education at the University of Nebraska. The Fake News is using the old "ticking clock" rhetorical device you see in the movies. Daily we get infection rates and deaths. Tick. Tick. No context. The constant drumbeat makes things seem way worse.

The Fake News is in the business of generating controversy as that generates audience.

This thing blows over in 30 days. The King of Huskerboard has spoken!

Please keep political commentary about the president out of this thread. Thank you.

The author is a Dartmouth and Harvard grad. Somewhat famous. Very successful.

So...let me get this straight.  Every infectious disease expert around the world is in lock step telling you this is a very dangerous situation and the governments need to be doing what they are doing.

YOU go find one "Darmouth and Harvard" grad that says what you want him to say and it's...."AAAHHAAAAA!!!!  SEE???  Everyone else is lying to you"

Welcome to what is so wrong with how people consume media now days.  You are a prime example of it.  You want to believe something, so you go out on the internet and find someone who's spewing what you want to hear.  Meanwhile, they're an idiot.

PS.....not every Dartmouth or Harvard grad are rocket surgeons.
