Putting the dots together Wager got blitzed at the Nebraska HS Coaches Convention Happy Hour on Wednesday night in the Haymarket.  Jack Pontenza (DL GA), Tony White, and Ed Foley were speakers at the conference.

Can’t drink all night unless you start at happy hour.

I'd say Martin is positioned for success. He has solid credentials.

Definitely knows what he’s doing.  I hope he was already working with the TEs and knows them all. He’s got more TE experience than Wager… There has to be a reason that Josh Martin specifically was hired on as an Analyst. Leads me to believe Rhule had this in place as a backup just in case he needed to step in.

Seems like we’re going cheap. Martin should be at least making about $130k (5/12 of what Wager did) over these last 5 months.

You could say his resume is better suited than Wager for being a college TE coach.

Seems like Wager was hired for his Texas connections more than his coaching acumen.

This narrative needs to stop. Wagner is a HS coaching legend in Texas. You don’t win as many games as he did without knowing how to coach.

Rhule had success with bringing Joey McGuire to Baylor, after McGuire's strong high school coaching career in Texas.  The older McGuire did well at Baylor as a position coach, and was then hired by Texas Tech as their head coach a few years later.

Rhule was trying to replicate that process with Wager, and it didn't work out this time.  It's not an indictment against Rhule, and Wager can now go back to Texas and probably get another high school coaching job that pays 6 figures.  I just hope Wager realizes he shouldn't get behind the wheel while being totally bombed.

Nobody said he wasn't a good coach, but if he were equally skilled as a coach, but from central Wyoming, what are the odds he'd have been hired at Nebraska?

I think most HS coaches who win multiple state titles probably get calls from colleges from time to time.  Also helps when you are in a recruiting hotbed
