The Register Guard: NU makes a play for former Husker Scott Frost

I get the feeling he won't come here, Nebraska loyalty or not. He's in a pretty good position there and the offer would have to be very good for him to defect (OC). I would think that if he were ambitious he would want the chance to fix a horrible offense and even further cement his legacy. That would be a huge step toward rising through the coaching ranks.

Part of me wants a job to offered to Frost and have him turn it down, thus shunning Nebraska twice. I want to see the reaction of the “he bleeds Red” folks.

Part of me wants him to take a job as OC here if it is offered to him, have him have a couple stinker games and watch the Big Red faithful turn on him like it is 1996 all over again.

Part of me wants him to take a job at NU because I think he would be an asset to the program. Be successful as a position coach and then continue to move up in the ranks at NU and retire here.

Part of me doesn’t give a rats backside if he ever coaches at NU, although I would prefer he did.

As stated, loyalty to Nebraska may not be as high as some think. He went to Stanford to be coached by a legend in Walsh, only returned to Nebraska because they were changing him to safety.

Oregon should be the preseason number one is my guess. They keep all the talent people on the team. Winning a NC helps your resume I would guess.

I think there is a chance of him coming here, but only as the Co or OC.

Frost didn't come back when they changed him to safety. He came back when Walsh stepped down at Stanford. I don't know why people continue to question Frost's loyalty to Nebraska, but then go on to give someone like Danny Woodhead a pass. Frost broke all kinds of passing records while in high school. His dream was to play in the NFL as a QB. How many QB's did TO and Nebraska send to the NFL? Given the same circumstances, almost everyone in Frost's position would have chosen to play for the WCO master Walsh. Woodhead had the opportunity to walk-on at Nebraska, but he chose to take the scholly and play at Chadron. He gets a pass while Frost gets his loyalty questioned?

It's also comical to hear people almost get down on their hands and knees and beg for a person to come back that many fans hated fifteen years ago. There were a fair amount of fans that blamed Frost for the LP implosion in 1995.

Here's my question with regards to bringing Frost back as a Co-OC: who calls the plays? My personal bias would be to get Frost back on the staff and groom him for the eventual takeover as HC once Bo either retires or moves on to another program. He's been on both sides of the ball as both a player and as a coach. He comes from a line of coaches. He just seems like a good fit.

Frost was offered a scholarship, Woodhead wasn't - so I won't blame him for his decision one bit. Saying Woodhead was unloyal because he didn't walk on is a dick move junior.

I don't understand the rabid love of Frost for OC. As WR coach he'd be great, but nobody knows how he'd do as OC. Sure he could be the next great thing, but he could also stink. And almost nobody is talking about how he'd mesh with the rest of the staff and whether he'd be able to hire his own offensive staff. I have no idea if rumors are true, but he might not get along with Bo - that's a pretty critical relationship.

Bottom line: there isn't compelling reasons to love this guy as the OC. I know he played at NU, but that isn't a good reason for getting a coach.

Tell us how you really feel. Calm down just a smidgen if you would. The dude you quoted said:

I agree. I would love to see him back, but I am starting to like the whole Warriner as OLine/OC deal going on, too. I'm not sold on Beck as OC, IMO.

Also, as much as I like Frost and want him back, I'm not sure handing the reins over to him is the right move. He has only been at OU for a couple of years, I think that a "Co" position with Warriner would be great, or be given the title of "Run/Pass game coordinator." Who know, maybe Bo does remember Frank taking a chance on him and is willing to do the same?

I'm getting to the point that I don't want to see Barney coach anything, however. But I guess that with TEs, he could do the least damage. Heck, at least Ben and Kyler have 3 years of tutilage under Ron Brown, don't think that Barney could screw that up too bad.

Don't forget the fact that Frost's time at NU wasn't all that glorious.

When Nebraska fans booed a Husker this season for the first time in just about anyone's memory, they booed Frost. "I expected everything to be easy," Frost says of quarterbacking Nebraska, "it's just been one challenge after another."

...

Frost and Osborne have butted heads on other occasions, as when Osborne learned last March that Frost had been patronizing one of the casinos in Council Bluffs, Iowa, an hour from campus, into the wee hours. Osborne phoned Frost at 8 a.m. to tell him not to go again. As Osborne well knew, Frost isn't an early riser.

...

"The thing that upset me the most wasn't the booing," he says. "I've come to expect that from the people around here. In the national and local media the impression went out that I was playing poorly. I had a good game that day. Even when I was doing things well, there has been a negative light."

The following week, while playing at then No. 2 Washington, Frost delivered a message to his critics. On Nebraska's first two possessions he ran for touchdowns of 34 and 30 yards to quickly put the Cornhuskers in control. Sales of the $55 number 7 jerseys at the Huskers Authentic store across the street from Memorial Stadium began to pick up. Not that Frost would win over everyone. "There are still die-hard fans who will never forgive him for going to Stanford," Taylor says. "They still say that in the local café."

HAHA - that article was written 13 years ago - and those same die-hard fans are still calling him disloyal today on Huskerboard.

I don't think it's a dick move at all. Woodhead not getting offered a scholly has been made a big deal for quite some time. If Woodhead would have been that confident in his abilities, he'd have walked-on and earned a scholly like so many walk-ons did in the past. Frost went to play for the guy who developed the WCO. He was also drafted back in a time when it wasn't really very common to draft a college QB and convert them to another position. It's very likely the only reason Frost got to play in the NFL was because of the time he played safety at Stanford.

People seem to get their panties in a bunch when discussing either Frost or Woodhead. I'd venture to guess Woodhead would not be playing in the NFL had he gotten a scholly from NU. I'd also venture to guess Frost would not have played in the NFL had he not went to Stanford first and had some exposure as a safety there. It seems to me that both were better off in the direction their path took them. However, it's all conjecture at this point. I just find it odd how some people continue to question the loyalty of a QB that landed us a NC trophy when there's been so few that have played here that accomplished as much.

It's funny, when many posters here were trying to have a thoughtful discussion on the possibility of Frost coaching here, we were (politely) berated by the Enlightened Ones about how silly we were. We as fans, we were reminded, are essentially bereft of any meaningful knowledge on what makes a good hire at any particular coaching position. We have no ability and thus no reasonable right to rationally analyze a coaching resume in the exclusive world of football expertise. We simply jump, shout and point like chimps when we see an ex-Husker player enter coaching. If they were a great player, they'd most certainly make a great coach, our tiny fan brains tell us. Our ideal coaching staff would include Rodgers, Rozier, Frazier and Wistrom.

So what are we to think now that the real coaches-- the experts, the anti-fans-- seem to be showing interest in Frost? Well, it must've just been a coincidence. Us fans were right, but not for the right reasons. We all thought he was a good coach because he ran well, took on tacklers head-on, and had an N on his helmet. Turns out he actually is a good coach. I guess even us broken clocks are right twice a day.

Negativity runs rampant!!

I never said he was unloyal, I said he may not come here because he is in a dream spot with Oregon.

He has bad memories of this program and the fans, that will not help. I have never bashed him in any way for his choice of Stanford. When one of the greatest offensive coaches asks you to come to Stanford and your dreams are of playing QB in the NFL, you would be an idiot not to jump at the chance.

And he came here because he was not going to play QB at Stanford and was being changed to defensive side of the ball, and that was voiced by Walsh. He did not have the ability to play at that level in the position.

I am glad he came back, and feel he did a great job for Nebraska, I also feel he is a diamond in the rough, but my main concern would be him getting along with Bo. They are pretty much the same person.

Twist some elses ideas, but I am getting tired of every comment being thought of as negative.

Negative is I do not like the way Bo is running the program currently, I do not like his antics on the sidelines nor his actions towards the media. I like Bo and want him to grow and turn into a great coach. I am not sure that will happen. He can be a dictator, but not publicly is what I am saying. He has botched the coaching changes and made our word not what it should be. Some may not have been his doing, but it his job to correct the problem quickly and correctly. Saying they came here because he is the head coach is crap. The kids develop a relationship with their recruiter. Firing them after they have signed is bush league. Timing is critical.

The lure of working at his alma mater is apparently being dangled in front of Oregon receivers coach Scott Frost.

Nebraska coach Bo Pelini has contacted Frost about the possibility of taking a job with the Cornhuskers, the team Frost quarterbacked to the 1997 national championship. The Lincoln (Neb.) Journal Star reported late Wednesday that the two have spoken, and a UO source confirmed the interest from Nebraska in Oregon’s second-year receivers coach.

I took a peek over at one of the Oregon Ducks message board and they're hoping that Frost will be made a Co-OC there with the promise that he will be OC in a couple of years just to keep him at UO. They feel the same way about him that we do. The next few days are going to be very interesting.
