JJ Husker
JJ, that doesn't mean that the players aren't being suspended for the Nebraska game; it just means he won't publicly declare who they are (were, in the present tense of when it happens) until after the game is over. I realize they may (or may not...) suspend players for our game due to the brawl or other infractions. I just think a couple of the brawl participants earned the right to clearly be suspended and to have it announced without all the secret drama. It just makes me wonder how committed they are to really holding the players accountable. It just seems unnecessary to delay the announcement for a couple of the more egregious infractions. Notre Dame Joe
FOOTBALL, NOT RELIGION IN THIS THREAD. (see how I made big letters so you'd notice it?) I deleted a couple of jabs at our Mormon brethren. Let's not go there in this thread. If you want to discuss Mormonism start a thread in the Politics and Religion forum. One could argue that Nebraska Football is the biggest religion in the state, so they're jabbing at our religion too full blown cult imo. Now I want to see the deleted posts Quote Link to comment

NUance
I'm an alum of both BYU and NU and follow both teams, and I'm not from Utah or Nebraska. Before moving to Nebraska I swore I'd never live in Nebraska, but when my wife and I did, we loved it, and I'd be happy to move back again. Biggest downside to Lincoln is no mountains anywhere close. Anyway, the people we met in Nebraska were some of the best, kindest, most sincere, family oriented, people I've met in my life. Just an awesome community. In many ways Provo is very similar to Lincoln, and in many ways the people are similar and share similar goals. I think it's been too long since any football has been played, so everyone has resorted to playing the game in a silly Internet thread, where after months of football starvation people are a bit on edge. In my time in Nebraska, most the fans I met would never be condescending to another team ("best fans in America" I heard), and most of the BYU fans I know don't assume the world is out to get them and that anything BYU athletes do is justified by some poor behavior from other teams or fans. The fight in December was ugly and embarrassing. It's also frustrating that Bronco hasn't shared whether or not there will be any suspensions. I think it's comical that the BYU guys on this thread continue to suggest no one on the BYU side did anything wrong. The BYU fanbase would crucify the University of Utah football program if their team got in a fight and it appeared no one was going to be held accountable. Likewise, it's absurd for "unbiased" Nebraska fans to claim to know exactly what happened (no one does who wasn't on the field) and to take the high road. It's pretty easy to point fingers and be objective when it's not the team you're emotionally and financially invested in. My guess is that if the Huskers were in a fight and the coach determined that some other course of action was appropriate to pay penance (e.g. community outreach, or who knows), Husker fans would defend our coach and program. I don't know what suspensions we'll see Saturday, but historically Bronco has been over-the-top with his insistence on accountability and trying to develop men and not just athletes (almost to a fault), so I think it highly unlikely he just lets something slide without some sort of punishment. Whether anyone outside the program knows about the punishment is a different story. I love both teams, and I love the communities that support both universities. I'm hoping for a hard fought close game, no injuries, and for crying out loud no stupid fights or cheap shots. I hoping that interactions between BYU and NU fans Saturday leave both fan bases with a positive impression of each other. And I hope that between now and the game the arguing over how each school should run their programs stops. The insults stop. Let's talk football and celebrate the end of a long offseason! Great post, Stonewall! Welcome aboard!! Quote Link to comment
Redux
Just skimmed over the early to middle days of this thread. Boy has it evolved. From its infancy as a we dont know jack about BYU thread, to it's awkward preteen years during the jmfb football god saga, to its life now as a thread questioning its own beliefs. How time flies. Im gonna miss you BYU thread, lets enjoy the time we have left together. 2 Quote Link to comment
BIG ERN
This is why at BYU since they do missions, you can't go by them being a Jr or Sr etc. Taysom Hill graduated in 2009 - this guy is 25 years old! WR Mitch Mathews graduated in 2010 along with DE Bronson Kaufusi. Nebraska doesn't have any players who even graduated in 10' on their current roster. Quote Link to comment
Enhance
Personally, I think this is an unnecessarily difficult way to do this. It's going to make Bronco's post-game presser full of distraction-type questions. The way they've handled this seems a bit idiotic, don't you think? IIRC, Memphis came right out and explained how they were going to handle discipline related to the brawl, whereas BYU said it was all just going to be handled internally. Thus, leading to the questions and concerns over exactly what was going to happen. I understand not releasing suspended players' names in order to help them focus in the off-season. But, they should've at least outlined what the punishments were, i.e. number of games. Quote Link to comment

Fortunately, the BYU thread was able to straighten up and turn into a law abiding citizen. We're all hoping it doesn't revert to it's former lawless ways. Quote Link to comment

That's a way of doing it, too. Though, BYU's infractions were committed for the world to see last season. Nebraska's suspensions, whatever they were, weren't done in full view of the public. Very different PR situations there. Quote Link to comment
Red Five
Bronco on the fight suspensions: "The suspensions, or the issues, happened so long ago, and quite frankly if it were up to me completely, I am not sure you can punish the kids more than they have already been punished, in terms of the scrutiny," Mendenhall said. "What are we going to do to them now that is going to make more of a point? So I am not the only one who makes the decisions in this case, but as far as I am concerned, with the attention and what the players get, and rightly so at BYU, I don't know what else needs to happen for them to have learned their lesson. It is hard for me to watch, but we will move forward whenever this game is over." Quote Link to comment
Red Five
From a BYU board: "Koroma will not be suspended. According to @byupractice who seems to be pretty dialed in, Nacua, Takitaki, and Dye are suspended for that game and Langi is suspended for half of the game." Koroma - starting C Nacua - starting FS Takitaki - not on depth chart Dye - 2nd string RB Langi - staring MLB Quote Link to comment
