Yeah, the GOP is hopeless. This guy really believes that when he voted for Trump twice, he wasn't exactly who he is today. Because that would reveal uncomfortable truths about the Republican Party and the constituency that votes for it. Despite decades of evidence, ample warning, and Trump himself laying the groundwork all summer leading up to the election in 2020.

Donald Trump came into the 2016 election straight from several years of portraying a powerful and all-knowing boss on the hit TV show "The Apprentice"  and "Celebrity Apprentice."

 

That's who voters thought he was. No other candidate had a platform like a hit weekly TV show, featuring professional image makers presenting him as the ultimate decider.

 

It's weird if you go back and look at an episode of The Apprentice. That scripted Donald Trump generally seemed empathetic, practical, fair, and business savvy. Very little of the untethered narcissism that marked his Presidency or Twitter feed. Which made 2020 mystifying, seeing as Trump got 10 million more votes than he did in 2016 after proving himself nothing like the man he played on TV. 

 

He turned into an angry vessel that people could fill with their own favorite rage, 100% justified by his ability to blame liberals for everything.
