The few in the GOP who are not corrupt, not MEGA, not fringe Russian agents, not Neanderthals when it comes to civil rights - those few need to get out and start a new party of moderates.  The GOP is beyond reform.  Trump's 'leaven has spoiled the full lump'.

What if they can't find a speaker to replace McCarthy if he's ousted? Wouldn't that lead to a government shut down next month? I'd think the Democrats would want to keep him since there aren't really better options. Although they are a$$h@!es too so maybe they're okay with the government shutting down if they can blame it on Republicans.

As a moderate Democrat, I much appreciate the Republican race-to-the-bottom. Their insistence on being absolute morons, their base nominating the worst possible candidates, and their policy positions untethered from reality has allowed Democrats to win elections during a time when the systemic conditions favor Republicans massively.

Republicans are squandering their time of having massive electoral advantages. It's only a matter of time before that electoral advantage swings back in favor of democrats, at least for Presidential elections. Texas will be a blue state in the 2030s. If Democrats manage to win in 2024, it would mean that they've successfully won 8 years of control during a period of time when Republicans held all the cards and shot themselves in the foot.  And I have the lunatic voting base of the GOP to thank. You crazy people are the best, thank you.

Well, possibly. There aren't many other options, but Democrats are sort of in a position to not save him.

They worked with him and made a deal on the debt ceiling. McCarthy promptly went back on that deal. McCarthy said he'd only support an inquiry into Impeachment with a vote; he went back on that and launched an inquiry without one. The list goes on. Why should Democrats step in and save the Republican caucus? I get that they're the mature ones that constantly clean up the messes of Republican governorship, but at the end of the day the voters of the Republican party are responsible for the morons they elect.

If McCarthy wants to be saved by Democrats - which he doesn't - he'd give them something minor. Chairmanship of committees, consideration of one or two bills to vote on, clean government funding, etc. But he's beholden to his group of crazies in his party and won't offer any of that, and as such the party deserves what's happening to it.

All very good points.  History will look back at this time and record the beginning of the death of a party.  If the GOP had adopted more moderate policies and positions, they would have prevented their own pending demise. Even the SC has ruled recently against the GOP on unfair redistricting cases. If that continues, it may become harder for the GOP to gain and maintain control of the House.   The GOP will rue the day they allowed Trump to ride down that escalator and not have a united front against him.

Last paragraph:

It’s possible that some Republicans have something else up their sleeve—remember, the speaker does not have to be a member of the House. But for now, the situation leaves Stefanik as the most obvious successor to McCarthy. While the most obvious choice is not necessarily the one that will prevail, it’s not like whoever replaces McCarthy will have a tough act to follow. If vacated, McCarthy will be laughed out of the House of Representatives to be replaced by someone who may well suffer the same fate. This is what happens when a party of prolific s#!tposters is required to actually govern: They fail miserably, to the detriment of us all.
