huskerdude171
All the negativity from Saturday aside, I think we need to get Pierson-El involved as much as possible in our passing attack given the injuries at the WR position. He's already shown that he has natural play-making ability with single handedly providing a spark in the previous non-existent punt return game. Isn't it funny how we leave it up to an 18 year old kid, fresh out of high school to solve our punt return woes when these coaches have had 7 years to figure it out? Anyway, nevermind that, I'm just glad that our special teams unit seems to be solid this year. But I think getting Pierson-El involved in the passing game more often. I was thinking all during the 2nd half of McNeese state, why don't we ever line him up in the slot? I know he's lower on the depth chart than Alonzo Moore, or probably another WR, but why not give him a chance when things aren't going your way? I could see him getting involved on some end arounds with his speed, as well as some quick screen passes to the outside. He had a TD running a slant against FAU. Why is Beck so difficult when it comes to giving guys playing time based not on their position on the depth chart, but natural talent and our need for someone to make a play? I say put Westerkamp and Moore on the outside and then Pierson-El in the slot, have him run underneath routes to slow down the pass rush and maybe give Abdullah some open lanes. Then once the short passing game and running game is established, let him rip deep when the defense is keying in on Westy and Abdullah. It just seems Beck is so stubborn when it comes to thinking outside the box or outside of the established gameplan that they develop during the week. If he's making plays in the punt return game, why would he not be able to translate that to our offense? I know Beck would claim he doesn't fully "understand the system", but throw that crap out the window when the team is going 3 and out time and time again. I think Pierson-El is going to be a good WR and punt returner, and seems to have natural ability, the only thing holding him back is Tim Beck's mind-boggling personnel and playcalling decisions. Igetbored216
Compare the way he tracks and catches punts to Bell, Westerkamp, or any other player that has attempted PR. The kid is a natural, and he will break one this year. Hell, seeing a PR go for more than ten yards was simply amazing. I'm not even going to get into Beck and his thought process. I have given up on that a long time ago. Hopefully Pierson-El gets his chance at WR, or at least some specific plays to showcase his speed and wiggle (jet sweep may be perfect), but I wouldn't hold your breath with Beck with the offensive reigns. 2 Quote Link to comment

Pierson-El is a playmaker. I am very excited to see this kid returning punts and kicks, also if he gets a chance at WR, he will be fun to watch! Quote Link to comment
chamrocck
I like what I see from this kid thus far. We need some guys to contribute big if we want to go anywhere this year...he could be a pleasant surprise. Hope the kid works hard and he should see the field more and more. Quote Link to comment

Abdullah the Butcher
Bo said he is considering bringing Irons and Tolbert to Fresno, both true freshmen. Quote Link to comment

ColoradoHusk
I finally watched the game last night (was out and about on Saturday, busy on Sunday) and I like what Pierson-El does in the punt return game. He knows how to track the punt, be in proper position, and then he heads upfield after receiving it. Quote Link to comment
Creighton Duke
As much as he may be a valuable receiving weapon, I don't want to risk the first bright spot we've had in the return game since Ameer back in 2011 being injured or wearing out. Let's say Pierson-El returns 5 punts a game and maintains his 10 year average. That's 50 more yards in field position than we have been accustomed to over the last few years. That is game-changing enough (for now) that I would hold off on putting him at receiver. Quote Link to comment

However, if those three are out or slowed with injury, then we probably need him as a receiver. Quote Link to comment
BaytownHusker
He had his shot already. Didnt he score a TD in the 1st game. Quote Link to comment

huskerdude171
He had his shot already. Didnt he score a TD in the 1st game. And then I didn't see him play a single snap at WR against McNeese State......even after Bell and Turner went out with injuries. Trying to understand Tim Beck's thought processes is extremely rage inducing. 1 Quote Link to comment
