Ball's in your court. How would you cover sports 24/7?

 

Sorry that I was just joking around last response. Honest answer - I'd put more women's college volleyball on. I'd slot two hours for a match, and if it wrapped up quicker I'd have my studio guys standing by to chit-chat until the next match started. More college baseball. More college sports of all kinds. Women's BB. Softball. College golf. Stuff like that.

 

Less talking heads. Less catch-phrase-driven shows. Let the sports be the stars, not the commentators. More shows like 30/30 or Outside the Lines, and less Around the Horn and PTI (although I don't mind PTI). I know ATH and PTI are very cheap to produce and have bigger audiences, but I'd prefer more sports and less of that stuff.

 

Good answer. But ESPN remains a business, and it's hard to make the argument against cheap shows with bigger audiences. I'm impressed they get on as much women's sports as they do. I've watched women's volleyball and softball with my daughter, college lacrosse with my son. The balance seems about right, or at least as much as I'd be willing to defend to the head of the network paying my salary.

 

I like knowing I can simultaneously get scores and highlights on the major sports virtually anytime I like. ESPN has produced some outstanding documentaries and generally exhbits a good sense of humor. I'd hate them to take sports even more seriously. ESPN's talking heads -- while sometimes irritating -- remain smarter and more likeable than the supposed experts cable news is trotting out 24/7. Again, sad.

 

Catch phrase programming? I'm afraid that like Twitter, it's here to stay. ESPN is hardly the most egregious.

 

I'm probably not making my argument to you anyway, Knapp. I'm thinking more of that strain of Husker fan who mostly watch ESPN for college football, and only then for references to Nebraska, and cannot be swayed from their conviction that ESPN (and the nation at large) fails to pay Nebraska proper respect. There's all kinds of evidence to the contrary, but I'll save that for later.

ESPN, like all TV stations, is ratings-driven.

 

If you want to have a non-school or non-conference affiliated network that shows a ton of volleyball and women's softball, without any talking heads or ratings-centric BS, I'd like to see you try. You'll see how far that gets when you look for advertising sponsors and cable providers to actually carry your channel.

 

Just the way things are, accept it.

Here's ESPN's statement. Took them one week to install security measures that they should have put in place years ago. Many, many votes ago. Welcome to the year 2000, ESPN. :rolleyes:

 

 

The integrity and accuracy of the vote is absolutely paramount to the promotion.

 

Our team has determined that the best course of action is to roll back the tally sheets and start with a new contest. This is the only way that we can truly guarantee that the votes are accurate and everyone is playing by the rules.

 

We are extremely confident in the new multiple levels of security that we have put in place and the revamped site will have the same level of defense as financial sites. The great news is that to the fan, there will be no significant barrier or effort to entry.

 

There are no more overzealous fans than fans of College Football and GameDay and as we saw, the fan response to the GameDay vote was truly overwhelming. With such a high level of excitement, it's critical that we put these additional measures in place to make sure the vote is both fair and accurate.

 

The vote will begin again on Tuesday, May 1st at noon/ET and 3/PT for the planned 10 day period. Buzz continues to build, so we're confident that fans will return in droves to participate. Most importantly, we want it to remain a fun experience that captures the deep passion that fans have for your school, college football and College GameDay.
