Shatel: Something still amiss with Husker defense

Did you not see USC's defense the past few years that he was there?

Monte Kiffin without Lane Kiffin >>>Monte Kiffin with Lane Kiffin. See Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Nebraska, etc.

(Actually, anything without Lane Kiffin >>>anything with Lane Kiffin)

Anyhow, I remember Monte Kiffin is with the Cowboys now.

I wish McBride could come in and finish this year as DC. Then a veteran DC could be hired.

my guess is Charlie would rather take an ass whoopin' than be part of this...

Good Lord....

I leave the board for a while to work and this thread sure has dove into a sess pool of negativity.

Now, we need to go hire Charlie back to fix it? We are so far gone that even if Charlie could do it, no way in hell he would want to touch this team?

Are you guys also on suicidal watch? Because you guys are starting to worry me about your well being.

that shatel is an astute fellow, he should come write for huskerboard.

anyway, it still comes down to recruiting, which bo is getting better at. it is a problem that takes 2-3 years to recognize and 2-3 years to fix. we are seeing it get fixed right before our eyes. everyone just needs to calm down and realize that the only way we get ahead is with patience. we cannot have the rapid turnaround an sec team might be afforded.

See Auburn 2010, National Champions to 8-5, to 3-9. I'll take consistency over being a one and done any day.

Why is it supposed those are the only two options?

i do not know that those are, but it seems like nu has a lot of disadvantages and bo does have the program in the right direction. so it is worth the wait. just my take.

The point is that it takes time to build a successful program that will last. Bo has taken it in the shorts to get better in the future and we'll see that as the defense improves. You have to remember last years defense should have been playing their best football at the end of last year and these guys should be playing their worst right now.

But the common misconception around this board is that questioning Bo and his team is the same as calling for his head. I still support Bo. But these teams have issues. We are discussing those issues. Am I glad we had this streak of 9 win seasons...yes. But there is nothing wrong with wanting improvement. Bo wants that. We should too.

We should be competing for conference titles and winning some of them. We haven't won a title since 1999. Really? Nebraska football hasn't won it's own conference in 13 seasons! Kstate has won the damn thing twice since then. Are we supposed to be satisfied with that?

So when we question the mental lapses and the discipline issues and see flaws in the program...there's some justification for it. You think Nick Saban is patting himself on the back for his success? I'd wager Bo is every bit the competitor Saban is.

You're still relatively knew to the board. This is tame. We don't have anyone quitting as a Husker fan followed by all the "don't let the door hit you..." comments and and bunch of pony gifs flooding the thread yet so we're still good. Now had we lost...

This board is pretty tame and actually pretty constructive in its critique of BP and the defense. If you want to see people bitch go look at Huskerpedia and see the negativity flow.

McBride was not the great DC you all thought he was all the time. There was plenty of people that wanted him gone for a great number of years. He only became a genius in about 1992. :ahhhhhhhh

What gets me is people read the "opinions" of sports writers who have zero coaching experience and actually think they have all the answers.

I read them. I have 42 years of coaching experience in 4 different sports, from little league, high school to college. I have also officiated various sporting events. I do not have all the answers. However, one does not have to have those credentials to to have an astute awareness of the major problems on this current football team. It all comes down to coaching. After coaching, recruiting and player development are the main ingredients. To add to that, I have been a Husker supporter for the major portion of my life and I am 69 years old. Until we have better coaching for the kids, we will ultimately have the same results. We have not seen the last of the defense giving up 600 yards to an opponent. Pelini says the defense can be fixed. How many times has he said that? To date, I have not seen a change or the fixes.

Damon Benning hinted that Bo is holding back on the defense. Like Bo was being sly like a fox. He was basing that on things he saw as the sideline reporter last Saturday. I hope we will see changes to the defense for the UCLA game as it seems as though they were the team to create the template to defeat Bo's defensive scheme that many teams have used since then. If true we will see the same stuff this Saturday against S Miss. Then the surprise for UCLA. The only support for this is the fact Bo closed practice to the media and former players along with the hint from Benning. I can dream can't I?
