TGHusker
As much as I respect Ron Brown for his full body of work at NU, I think this article and comments by Cross is reflective of the affect the new coaching will have on the team as a whole. I think we will see the benefits in every area of the team. http://nebraska.247sports.com/Bolt/Davis-commanding-respect-in-RB-room-36063944 Saturday’s practice was the first time Imani Cross and the rest of the running backs got to experience the hands on treatment Nebraska assistant Reggie Davis can bring to the position room. Davis coached with Mike Riley at Oregon State before heading over to the NFL to work with Jim Harbaugh. Now he’s back with Riley in Lincoln and Cross said he has complete command and respect from the running back room. “Knowledge is power,” Cross said. “He has a lot of knowledge. He knows a lot about the game. He loves the game. Those are qualities I feel like I have, so I’m glad coach Davis is here.” To Cross there’s a very distinct difference between Davis and his predecessor Ron Brown. “I think that coach Davis is a little more in tune with running back specifics,” Cross said. “With him being a professional and being around Frank Gore at the San Francisco 49ers, I think his knowledge is on another level." Overall the first day of actual practice with Davis went well. “It was fun to actually get on the field and do what we’ve been talking about for so long,” he said. “I had a blast today." 5 Quote Link to comment
BigRedBuster
Great to hear. Riley said early on that his staff is going to be filled with guys who are experts at their position. This is exactly what he was talking bout. Quote Link to comment
Landlord
Cool to hear about Cross and his endorsement of our new coach, but I don't know if I could take it to be a knock on Ron Brown. Even if Imani meant it that way, the dude has produced and developed Rex Burkhead and Ameer Abdullah, both record setting all conference backs here, and both (soon to be) playing in the league. 3 Quote Link to comment
BigRedBuster
I don't take his comments to have anything to do with Brown. Davis is his coach now and he's moving forward and excited about his new coach. 1 Quote Link to comment

TGHusker
Yea, I don't see it as a knock on Brown. Normally every position Brown touched improved. As mentioned, Brown benefited both AA and Rex. I take this as meaning, Brown may have been a jack of all trades ( I think he's coached WR, TE also) but the new coach is a specialist for RBs and it shows a life of work experience dealing wt RBs only. 1 Quote Link to comment
Elf
Ron Brown is a good coach, I don't think anyone here would say otherwise.I took Imani's comments as a positive, the young man enjoys working with his new coach. This is a good thing. Maybe we shouldn't read more into these comments than what is there. Quote Link to comment

I agree with your point, but just for clarification, Coach Davis coached tight ends and o-line more recently than running backs. Quote Link to comment
zoogs
Kaz, Brown & Warren were probably the biggest losses from the last staff. Jury's out on the DL guy, but I can't be more impressed with the new RBs and DBs coaches. We are very lucky. 1 Quote Link to comment
admo
I know there is some talk and hope about Taylor and Wilbon's potential, but I've got a gut feeling that Newby is going to have the best season of all the backs. However, the key is how well he runs north and south between the tackles. I read that Riley's offense like to run a lot between the tackles to help set up play action success. If Newby can't do that well enough, or has ball security issues, I can then envision more Taylor. Cross will probably be used for specific purposes. If all the backs can stay healthy, I don't see enough carries for 4 running backs. Not that a committee can't do the job. You need a go-to guy established. I think all the backs will benefit with Davis coaching them. I'm happy he is here, and as someone stated, an expert of knowledge at the position he is coaching. Quote Link to comment
teachercd
I think some of you guys are acting like the last staff was telling the RB's to take hand-offs with their feet. 3 Quote Link to comment
swmohusker
Back ups love new coaches. It gives them a fresh start at winning a job. Davis could be a stud coach but coaching running backs isn't rocket science Quote Link to comment

For a guy who is a burner, I've been very impressed right from the start with how willing he is to lower a shoulder and finish a run. I'm not sure who'll rise to the top in this group but I would bet Newby will be in the rotation. Quote Link to comment
