  1. Oh...OK, there it is, I found the disconnect. It's you. While you're "pretty sure this isn't the case", I do the work, and know it's the case. So Mav, can I call you Mav? Anyway, so Mav, I work in finance at a major university. I have friends who work in finance at major universities. Locally, I have friends who work at UNO, Creighton, UNL, Chadron and College of St Mary's, I correspond on a regular basis with finance people at other universities both in state and out of state. I have friends that work on the academic side, I have friends who work on the athletics side. I have worked on both sides. I have worked in audit at a major university, where part of my job was going to departments making sure the accounting practices they were doing in said department followed GAAP and university guidelines (you'd be shocked at some of the "creative accounting" athletics and development will do to provide tax benefits to major donors) so when all departments are rolled up to Treasury to finalize our reports, there are no accounting anomalies between departments that need to be corrected. Our annual NCAA audit is a stickler for accounting irregularities within the athletic department. The main commonality between all these different schools, whether the athletic department is in the black, the red, or relatively breaking, even was how capital projects were funded. While each university will have it's own naming formats, we all do it the same. There's this crazy account and budget for each school that is some derivative of "Capital Projects". Projects that are just too big for the department to handle, ie new dorms, new chem labs, upgrades to infrastructure (think repaving parking lots, upgrading HVACs, expanding buildings etc). The funds for this budget come from various sources, donations, state funds, fundraising events, and a portion of net profits from the university. Individual departments will submit proposals annually for capital projects, these are then reviewed by the board. Some are given a green light, some a yellow and others a red. Within green and yellow, they are then prioritized. With every proposal, each department will project how much they will fundraise to help mitigate the total estimate. Athletics will follow these same principals, even the ones who are in the black. That's because regardless of the net revenue/loss in athletics, they do not have capital projects in their annual budgets. This is because there's a whole different department that has that budget (that crazy Capital Projects department). So, when UNL announced major capital improvements to Memorial Stadium, it had already had a proposal done, with estimates of cost and fundraising goals, gone through the approval process, given a green light and allowed to proceed. Athletics will help fund the project, but they do not, and more importantly CANNOT, fund the project entirely. Now when funds to the university as a whole are reduced, one of the first areas that will be impacted will be the Capital Projects budget, as usually those are not priority needs for the university to run day-to-day operations. Hopefully, you can see where this is going...but I'll try to dumb it down for you and the board. Mav, when capital funding budget is decreased, I want you to take a wild guess on what that means for current capital projects? Yes, you are correct, those capital projects now have less funds available. Good work using your deductive skills. To counteract that, the project has to be modified to fit within the new budget, or the project department will have to make up the difference in fundraising. In some rare cases, the department will request a temporary allocation of their annual budget to the capital budget. Doing so usually means a reduction in overhead within said department. The biggest overhead that can be reduced is staff, hence why it doesn't happen often. Now follow along with me Mav on a fun little ride, when the governor reduced funds to UNL (based on what we've learned above) what do you think happened to their stadium upgrade capital project? Correct!! The project now has less funds available. While it's nice that UNL Athletics operates in the black, it will give them a little bit of wiggle room for some shortfalls, that net revenue in no way covers the new variance within the project. This gives athletics a few options, either go back to the people that have committed above and beyond their normal donations to UNL, to help fund this capital project and ask for even more money or modify the current project to fit within the new budget. One thing I know (notice here how I didn't say pretty sure?) about UNL Athletics is they will not request a temporary allocation of their budget to the capital project. That's just not what they do. All of this is still a dumbed down version of what the finance team will do, and this team will be on both the academic side and the athletic side, all rolling up under Treasury. The one take away I want you to understand Mav, athletics is not covering this project 100%, and (I can't emphasize this part enough) would never be able to do it on their own, the university handles this project. And while you're "pretty sure that's not how this works", I can emphatically tell you, you are wrong, and it is how this works.

  8. Alright boys it's moving day! Nebraska had a pretty darn terrific Day 1 but today is where the big points are because if you win this morning in the QFs, you lock up AA status. Let's jump in. As always, shout out Dylan from Corn Nation who does a great job covering the club: https://www.cornnation.com/ 125: Man, Smith has been electric so far this tournament. He gets another crack at Barnett who he's 0-2 against this year. Smith dropped a close decision to Barnett in the dual and if my memory serves, had Barnett in real trouble a couple times but Barnett funked out. Smith admittedly got hammered at Big Tens but that sometimes happens as Barnett is really tough on top. I'm not exactly going out on a limb here but if Smith can get the first TD and avoid needing to go underneath, that would be huge. Both guys have looked great so far in this tournament. Barnett is rightly the favorite but we're homers here, so let's say Smith gets it done. Now, if Smith drops his match he falls into a pretty favorable pod in the consi as the 4 wrestlers in there are all seeded lower than Smith. That being said, 125 is completely nuts so nothing would surprise me. 133: Van Dee had a nice win avenging a loss versus UNI in the first round before he just went up against a little better guy in Orine from NCST. I do think Van Dee got a little hosed in the 2nd period as I thought he did enough to warrant an escape but even if he gets the 1, Orine had racked up enough RT to get a point so Van Dee would've needed a TD either way. Van Dee has a tough road to hoe in the consis. I think he beats Wells from Minnesota but then he probably has to get by Latona of VT who is a 2x AA who is a tough cat. If we go full homer and say Van Dee beats Latona he'll have to beat either Frost of ISU the 8 seed or Daton Fix of Okie Lite who is the #1. Van Dee has had a great campaign, I just don't think he gets to the podium this year. 141: Hardy looked awesome yesterday. The funk was in full display and he handled Lemley nicely. He's got the 1 seed, Mendez of Ohio State who already owns a 11-3 win over Hardy at the CKLV. Mendez has looked tremendous this year and it will take a really special effort from Hardy to get past him. I don't think Hardy has the firepower to do it and will drop to the backside. The good news is, he, too gets a favorable pod. 2 of the 4 guys in there--Navy and Arizona State have already lost to Hardy by 4 and and 5 points respectively. Also, Cushing the NU backup beat the Purdue guy so you'd feel good about Hardy's chances. I'll stick with my original prediction of Hardy getting AA status. 149: Ridge did Ridge stuff. I didn't love him giving up the TD at the very end to Rooks but at this stage of the game, it's survive and advance. He's going to have a fist fight this morning with Swiderski of ISU, nothing out of the ordinary but ISU is going to try and ugly this thing up. Ultimately, I think Ridge gets it done and moves on like we thought. 157: Robb looked great and really blew it open versus Lewan which changed who the whole trajectory of the match. He's got Haines this morning from Penn State who has handled Robb previously and I think it just a level above right now. As with the other NU guys, he'll be favored in the blood round and should lock up AA status again. 165: Oh mama Taylor! He looked awesome in the 1st round and hung on for dear life against a really tough WVU guy. Taylor showed some great upper body work to go up 5-0 and did jusssssstttt enough to earn the win. His reward? Congratulations you get Keegan O'Toole from Mizzou, a 2x national champ who is arguably the best P4P guy in the tournament. On the backside, he isn't going to face anyone that is highly seeded. He's split with the AF guy and owns a win over Fish from MSU. He'll have to wrestle tough but he's got the skills to secure an AA finish. 184: The refs tried to cheat our boy Lenny with a terrible stall call but he overcame and now is in the QFs against Munoz. I predicted he'd beat Munoz to lock up AA but should he drop the match, he falls into a pod and if it breaks a certain way, will get a rematch with fellow beefcake Rogotztke of Ohio State who is strong like bull. Even if Pinto loses this morning I think he should have enough gas in the tank to secure an AA finish. 197: Allred was the beneficiary of a nice little upset and had a couple nice wins and finds himself in the QFs against Hidlay of NCST who is on a vision quest right now to wrestle Brooks of PSU. Allred beating Hidlay would be a massive upset which I don't see happening. In the blood round, I think he ends up catching either Smith of MD (yes please) or Cardenas of Cornell (no thank you). That being said, Cardenas looked terrible against Elam of Mizzou so maybe he's dinged up? If Allred gets Smith, he AAs, if it's Cardenas, total coin flip. HWT: Nash was outgunned in his first match like we thought. In the consis, he came within a whisker of getting a TD in SV to advance but unfortunately he had a little lapse on the edge of the mat and ended up giving up the TD and losing. Nash was understandably frustrated coming off the mat but he can hold his head high. Going from basically off the street and making the NCAAs in basically a semester is incredible. I'm revising my predictions from yesterday, I think Nebraska gets 6 AAs and if the cards break right, they can get 7 which would be a truly massive haul. GBR!

  10. The whole story and the GOP reaction to it is just dumbfounding. What if someone walks into a crowded area acting crazy toting guns and yelling, someone tackles him and gets shot by the person, and they prevented 30 people from dying. Based on what happened with Rittenhouse, the crazy guy would go free and be able to try again later. He basically gave all would-be mass murderers a playbook on how to get as far as you can before crossing that line so you can do the most damage. Just wave your gun around while running around but don't start shooting yet.

  18. I honestly don't understand what the Republicans who didn't put a stop to this when they could were thinking. I mean, maybe fear of revenge was in mind, but there were multiple times they could have easily banded together and prevented that possibility, including by impeaching him in 2021. Let's just say Trump becomes president and then we're a dictatorship by 2028... who in the GOP since 2016 will be better off with that than they would have otherwise been? Maybe like 2-3 people in his inner circle. No one else. So even if Trump wins, the other leaders in the GOP will not win. They had the power to stop this but f#&%ed up at every single turn. Now let's say he doesn't win. They are going to have s#!t for money for their campaigns because of Trump owning the RNC, from presidential elections all the way downstream. There is no way he is going to do anything that doesn't help him personally, and he's not smart enough to realize some of these lesser elections could help him personally.

  26. As has GM. The bigger issue your missing is why does a company who has been making record profits for years, just gave their CEO a huge raise, and is participating in stock BuyBacks and dividends need to lay people off? Also, those jobs won't be coming back. They're being outsourced to India just like the tech industry. Rumor is there's more to come. They capped it at 400 this time because 500 or more and they have to report it to the state of Michigan before they start the layoffs.

  27. Again, Donald Trump and his father were defrauding New York State and others by hundreds of millions of dollars long before Don ran for President. It may indeed be a political witch hunt at this point, but that doesn't alter the fact that it's long overdue.

  36. The first guy shot had a plastic bag he was flinging around... Of the two other guys one had a pistol and the other a skateboard. I believe Rittenhouse killed the guy with the skateboard and the other guy with the pistol was shot in the arm. Again, both those men were shot after the initial incident where he shot the guy with the plastic bag that was chasing him. I've never thought he would be convicted of murder, but there is definitely room for a civil suit and maybe manslaughter based on all his actions that led to him being there. But whatever, he's still a woman beating piece of s#!t
