I think Northwestern as in the Old Northwest as the US NW was what's now Illinois and Ohio after the Treaty of Paris was adopted in 1783 and the Northwest Ordinance was ratified soon after.

Yeah according to the the Northwestern University wikipedia page it was a nod to the old Northwest Territory, which didn't exist at the time of the founding of the university but I guess that was the common name for the area still. #history
