Spring Practice Updates

NFL teams are allowed to have 45 active players on a gameday roster. It is HIGHLY unlikely a team carries a kick return specialist. This is even more unlikely since the kickoff changes and now nearly 50% of kickoffs are even returned. His only chance would be if he proved to be able to make a team as a 4th or 5th wide receiver and they happen to put him back to return kicks

Are you serious? Bill Belichic was one of the first coaches to draft a player JUST for special teams. There are quite a few that do now. Like the Redskins, Texans and Browns. Like Roger Dorn said above, Holliday is a perfect example.

More and more teams will continue to draft for JUST return specialists.

New England's kick returner last year was their best DB, Devin McCourty. Browns have their 2nd best WR. Redskins, Brandon Banks (I will give you that one). Texans, Jacoby Jones (their 2nd or 3rd WR). As I said above, 2 or 3 players (Banks, Holliday, and maybe one other one who I'm not aware of) doesn't make Taylor's chances likely. I said it's unlikely which doesn't make me incorrect.

So 4.3 speed doesn't translate to the NFL. If he goes to the pros, slims down maybe gets faster and can focus on the much simpler position of returner, why don't you think he can have success?

Maybe he can. I will say that Martinez doesn't seem as shifty as these other guys. They seem to have the ability to move around more fluidly. Martinez looks more rigid when he runs. If he can get past that, I think he could have a shot if he keeps his speed as well.

I never said he wouldn't have return as a returner. My argument is that if he doesn't have the ability to make the roster as a 4th or 5th WR on a team and subsequently return kicks, then it is improbable a team he makes a team. So far we have came up with two actual return specialist in the league. So when I say it's unlikely for him to be on a roster as an exclusive return guy, I think that is true. He needs to find another role on the team aside from kick returning because those are very rare

I think he has good enough hands to take snaps for field goals! He will be the Swiss Army knife of his team!

JP says almost all jobs on D still truly up for grabs. Named only Evans, Ankrah & Santos as guys who it's safe to assume will have roles.

Andrew Green left off this list? Injury aside (what is it anyway?), don't see him not starting.

He's been somewhat up-and-down. If Mitchell and Siesay make a jump, I could see him getting left out.

yeah, he never really "stood out" - but I didn't see that big of a gap between Evans and Green. I think a lot was asked of our CBs last year - poor safety play, bad line play. They were never able to play within their game...had to constantly be looking out for our slow LBers, or a safety that was out of position.

I haven't been really sold on Green, just like I am not sold on SJB. Green would rather try to make a play on the ball, instead of doing what he can to make sure the pass isn't complete. I saw this a couple times last year, and they ended in TD's, like the Georgia game. Mitchell is small, but your not going to burn him down the field. Only way your catching a ball against him, is a jump ball lol (sarcasm).

Green is good, but he is costly with trying to make the big play. He just needs to play smarter, and not go after the ball, especially when your the only defender in the area.

On teleconference, Bo says Santos out of workouts a few weeks with injury. Says Santos, Valentine, McMullen all will be ready for fall camp.

Pelini on D-line - made some great strides, especially second half of spring, it's a work in progress, but I like the potential

Rittenberg/Bennett@ESPN_BigTen1m

Pelini says they gave "a little more freedom" to senior DE Jason Ankrah this spring. "Hopefully, his best year is yet to come."

Rittenberg/Bennett@ESPN_BigTen3m

Pelini: "Jared Afalava did some really good things. Probably further ahead of where I thought he'd be." Thinks LB will be productive player

Big Ten Football@B1Gfootball2m

Pelini on OL Spencer Long - All-American, really developed well on and off field, has a bright future even beyond NEB.
