Yeah there must be some guys that they know are going to transfer in the spring.

The issue is that is they aren’t off scholarship now, they count against the 88 that the staff can sign to. So either some kids are no longer on scholarship that we don’t know about or the staff won’t sign 23-24.

If guys leave after the spring, we can put new players on scholarship that arrive in the summer/fall.

B1G coaches have to give a "good faith" estimate of the number of spots they will have open in the fall by signing date and they can can sign 3 over that number.

Which walk-ons from the past couple years are currently on scholarships? Because those wouldn't have to be 4 year schollies. Those could be given to an incoming freshman.

What goes into being declared a 5*?  Someone posted a while back about how many Ohio State has(a bunch) to how many we have (none).  FWIW, Michigan has 0 as well. And Notre Dame and lots of historically good programs.   Are there a set amount of 5*'s per recruiting class?

That isn’t the issue, it is how many can they sign as of the signing day. They can only go over by 3. If someone leaves after spring ball they can give that scholarship to a player on the the team, but the staff can’t sign another new player as that scholly is considered given. The point being that the number they sign is firm regardless of who leaves in the Spring. Need players to leave prior to this semester be open scholarships.

I'm not talking about signing day, which I agree with you about the 3 oversign rule (although there's some exception for new head coaches that I haven't read yet) and the need for current players to leave before signing day if we want to use their scholarship to sign another player.

I'm talking about putting players on scholarship, whether signed or not. If a player leaves after the spring, the coaches can absolutely give that scholarship to another player, whether currently on the team or just arriving.

Edit: For example, if Masry doesn't sign with the Huskers in Feb. but a current player leaves after the spring semester, then Masry can join the team and have a scholarship starting in the summer (the next semester after the player who had the scholarship leaves) or starting with fall camp if Masry is still waiting for grades.

So if we over sign, do we tell some current players (who don't fit the new coach's style of play) on the roster that they no longer have scholarships ?

Is there a way to 'get rid of dead weight' to make room for new players or are scholarships a 4 year deal period?  (Don't mean to be rude - each scholarship is important to these young guys).

Guys are supposed to be guaranteed their scholarship per B1G rules.  But you can kind of "help" them look to see if they might have a better opportunity somewhere else.

There are pretty much always a couple guys who leave each year for one reason or another.  And more so after a coaching change.  We're almost guaranteed to lose a QB.  I wouldn't be too worried about it.
