  1. People choosing to disparage Alberts or say he went for more money are doing so because they realize their vote helped put the University and it’s Athletic Department in the position it’s currently in (rudderless, lacking leadership, full of in-fighting and regent incompetence). Your vote has consequences—Terry Pettit has already called this out. Ricketts, Pillen, the Peeds—they’re systematically attacking the University by slashing its budget, and the regents they backed should be sued for malfeasance they’re so incompetent. But hey, blame Trev going for more money (which he didn’t get) or moving to another red State (that keeps their leadership) if that helps you cope with the fact that your vote for Pillen and Ricketts is helping kill the university.

  2. Why? This is exactly what Pillen, Ricketts, and the Peed family want. They want an unstable University they can dismantle, and leaving it rudderless and in the hands of incompetent lackeys on the BoR helps their cause. Frankly, a lot of Nebraska voters that *supposedly* love Husker athletics and the University need to realize that voting for the current (read: non-moderate) GOP candidates means undermining the University and its mission, which includes athletics. Also, it’s not a coincidence that some of the best runs the University *and* this state had is when we had moderate leadership at the helm, and not the incompetence we have now at Governor. Elections have consequences.

  3. "The 26K crybabies and snowflakes at UNL" which 26k exactly are you speaking of..?? "the state doesn't revolve around UNL." exactly the point that you seem to be missing... the state should not have their political fingers in the university at all.. I always seems to find it odd that the GOP wants smaller government ONLY on issues that they agree with and are constantly "arming themselves" against a government they don't trust...

  4. Great. We lose good talent at UNL and you blame the talent instead of the leadership that drove them out.

  5. I know it might not matter to some folks, but this kind of thinking will drive good professors and researchers away from the University at a huge cost to the institution and the state. There's a movement out there to make America stupider and angrier, and it's going to backfire on everybody.

  7. From people I know close-ish to the situation, the regents have had 3-4 people they wanted to offer the President position to, Pillen felt those candidates were too liberal ("too woke" was the quote used) and mentioned funding would be more challenging if they went that route. They are now having difficulty agreeing on a qualified candidate conservative enough for Pillen to ensure funding doesn't become an issue. So, with no permanent President in place, behind the scenes above Trev has been, from the way it was described to me "a complete and utter ish-show with no end in sight". Issues started before Trev was in place, but people above him shielded him from the chaos. That shield is gone and as of yesterday's conversations, has no replacements in sight. Trev has been unhappy for a long time with what has been going on from a university leadership standpoint and has wanted out for more than a year, not a lot of options on where he was willing to go, but he was going to take the first offer he could. He had been actively looking for options since around Jan. 2023, and expressed his concerns, through appropriate channels on several occasions. He made sure everything he did publicly was positive. The only way he would have stayed is if the regents and governor agreed to a person that was going to be forward thinking, and that's not happening anytime soon. Position may be filled soon-ish, but not by a forward thinking candidate.

  9. Held accountable for what?

  10. Both Pillen and Ricketts had bigger fish to fry. The 26K crybabies and snowflakes at UNL need to re-evaluate their importance as the rest of the state doesn't revolve around UNL. God forbid that UNL stay beholden to the taxpayers via the BoR. If these temper tantrums by Carter, Green, Alberts, are the result of being held accountable, then good riddance. There definitely is a cancer or a rot in UNL and in academia as a whole, but it's not the BOR. Maybe Sasse will come back to right the ship.

  12. And we can continue to dig up his alleged old flaws from past jobs all we like, but there is little doubt Trev was a great ambassador had NU athletics going in the right direction. The next AD isn't going to be Mr (or Mrs) Perfect either.

  15. True, I just picked the names people here would recognize. A lot of unintended consequences to this power struggle that general public doesn't see and don't realize. Loss of professors, inability to recruit good professors, the brain drain is real and will be devastating. The current desire to squash this 'woke' movement in academia is major problem in the not too distant future and is already having some very unsavory side effects. A lot of leopards will be full on faces.

  17. Terry Pettit, legendary former Husker volleyball coach: "Talented people (Ted Carter, Ronnie Green, Trev Alberts) leave a team when the leadership above them loses sight of the team's purpose. The team is the University. When the leadership cuts funding, and undermines the team's purpose with political dogma they leave." Never one to mince words.

  18. That is a very interesting pattern of leaving jobs for Trev. No matter what else may be wrong in this situation, we can't ignore this isn't the first time (or second, or third) he's departed a job like this. Good info, you guys.

  19. Leadership may not be where it needs to be at this particular moment, but it does not the change the fact that Nebraska took a big chance on him with just his UNO background. He basically got the job because he was an alumni. He just signed an extension. He hired a new football head coach just a year ago. They are starting major renovation projects. It was a horrible time to leave and he will justly be remembered for that. He deserves to be remembered as a "turncoat".

  20. Sadly this plan was hatched and implemented right under our noses in 2020 and only took 2 years to drive out key players in the UNL Admin. These seats are to be nonpartisan for a reason and the fact that Jim Pillen still thinks he holds a seat is very telling. 4 of the 8 seats (6 year terms) are up for re-election this year and "we the people" can make sure the UNL BoR is not weaponized anymore... if you are in district 3,4,5, or 8 - look to see who is sat and who is running against the incumbent... Sad to see what is happening across the country boil over into our public education spaces in a bad way... (rant over.. thank you)

  23. I disagree. Please provide any shred of proof that people in Nebraska even give 10% of a s#!t for UNO that they do about UNL football and the major sports. Pot meet kettle. Just prior to this post you complained about another poster using a portion of a quote…..then you did exactly the same thing by editing my post

  24. Minor as minor can be. UNO mens basketball making it to the dance ONCE is a bigger deal than anything that UNO wrestling or FB could have ever done. And a win the dance, winning one game. My god. It would be unreal. No one went to UNO FB games or wrestling meets. I coached wrestling and they BEGGED us to come watch their meets. I coached FB and we played games on their field and we drew more fans than they did.

  25. Wonder if he'll be welcomed to UNK went he gets s#!tcanned by A&M. You have to think he wants to complete the hat trick of screwing over Nebraska Universities.
    5 points
  26. And I have to add, damn few people in Nebraska actually care about what he did at UNO. Football. Volleyball. Basketball. At the flagship University in Lincoln. That is what people really care about. You might generally say that is all they care about. So, imo, this talk of he was disliked by some for what transpired at UNO is extremely minor in the grand scheme.

  27. That's the million dollar question. And, one the Nebraska media should press to find out. The one point on politics that I'll make is the tweet from Chris Dunker where he quoted an article of his from quite a while ago where the governor was actively working to get rid of the President and Chancellor. This governor thinks the same way. That can create a lot of political tension in a position like AD. That said, I really don't think aTm is any less dysfunctional.

  29. I think he did a great job. But I also think burning down everything because he left seems absurd. We seem to want to question everyone but Trev. He appears to have a significant history of not following through on commitments.

  35. Aaahhhh!!!! Now we know why you don’t like Trev. You’re still pissed about UNO.
    4 points
  36. I’m sure local wrestling is still pissed. Probably also some other Omaha locals (possibly some people you know or also talk to) pissed about a few things he did or didn’t do. Doesn’t change my point that those grievances don’t add up to squat relative to the UNL football, volleyball and basketball programs. Most of us don’t give a FF what Trev did at UNO.

  37. He's not going to make it public knowledge, as we know through the FB coaching search, he keeps things very close the vest, what you see in the public or in the office is VERY different than what he was feeling. He's not going to burn any bridges by making his frustrations public. He will go public when decisions are finalized, whether the public likes the decision or wants to know where he's at in the process doesn't matter. He went through the proper channels, expressed his concerns; not saying those comments went on deaf ears, but disfunction was unable to do anything to even address his concerns. He wants to be happy and aligned with where he works. He started looking privately, has been looking for long time, hoping that things would get resolved here. Things have only gotten worse over time and he accepted an offer where he feels comfortable and sees cohesion.

  38. I mean, I coached wrestling and have been in the HS sports community for a long a$$ time. I can't remember the last time anyone in HS wrestling or HS sports brought up UNO wrestling in any form at all, positive or negative. I have a friend that played FB for UNO and his last season was when the team was cut and he is still mad about it but he doesn't really bring it up, we just make fun of him from time to time about it.

  39. 26k that are faculty and students. UNL takes taxpayer funds. Take away the taxpayer funds and they can do whatever in the hell they want to do. Until then, the BoR needs to hold those at UNL accountable to the taxpayers.

  40. The conservatives in Texas aren't trying to take control of the Universities. Think about for a second that these people are dumber than Texas politicians and that should tell you all you need to know.

  41. It's not about the politics per se, which is a symptom of a greater problem, it's about the incompetence of the people in leadership (which is a common trend). You don't drive away 3 different people, in 3 different positions of leadership, from vastly different backgrounds, who are all well respected because you have quality leadership above them... Like you said, who did they all report to?

  42. It sounds like that the Interim President might be getting the Interim tag removed. And he doesn't agree with the half a billion dollar stadium renovation. (which is a bit excessive as most have stated.) Trev got pissed and took his ball and ran to a place where they throw money around like a drunken millionaire at a strip joint.

  43. Agreed. Carter left to go to that Liberal bastion of Ohio. And Albert’s left for the liberal bastion of Texas. just stop with that crap. The length of time to find a President doesn’t seem out of line either. it is starting to appear that Trev didn’t like who they wanted to hire and left.

  44. I guess I don't really buy the gap in Presidents being that big of an issue. I'm not sure we're that much different than any other place. For example, Ohio State's former President announced her retirement in November 2022. Ted Carter wasn't announced as the replacement until August 2023. He didn't assume his position until January of this year. By that timeline, we still have 6-ish months to have a new President in place.

  48. Except that property taxes are ~30% higher down there. I know this first hand, as I’m doing a LOT better with taxes up here than I was in Texas. People need to drop the myth that by not having state income tax Texas is some great Tax shelter. If you own any property you pay substantially for it. Plus let’s not overlook the 8.25% state sales tax (which is higher in certain cities). And add to the fact that property valuations are skyrocketing and while there’s a 10% cap, your valuation can change every year (opposed to every two years in NE), property owners are guaranteed a 10% increase in valuation EVERY YEAR…likely for the next decade or two until valuations catch up to actual values. Now car renewal taxes…those are the only taxes in NE I find to be ridiculously excessive.

  49. Rhule is a competitive guy and likely feels betrayed by Alberts, especially if its true that Rhule is out of the country now. I look for Rhule to use this betrayal as personal ammo to fire up the football team.
