  1. Not you Mav but the assertion he is getting hated on is a fallacy.

  2. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I wouldn't be surprised if HH is the starter game 1.

  4. I'm interested to know what offensive pieces and guys on the OL that you're not sold on? From what I've seen we've significantly upgraded at the WR position which was our second biggest flaw on offense a season ago behind only the abysmal QB play. I get the concerns with RPO and bubble screens considering our recent history with them, but the guys we've brought in this offseason are gamechangers compared to what we've had in the past. Fidone sees a completely different picture than last year when he catches an arrow off an RPO and now turns upfield to any combination of Banks, Bonner, Neyor, Boerkircher, and Coleman (when healthy). Opposing teams have NEVER had to respect that play in the past and could comfortably cheat toward the box. Then you add in the handful of deep-threats we now have and this is a completely different offense from anything we've seen since. I'm not saying we're going to be the number one offense in the BIG, but I think you're looking at a ceiling of top 5. And while I'm not drooling over any of our RBs I think all of them offer at least one skill that is above average. If you can't stuff the box (lol) against us, then tackling guys like Dowdell and Gabe (if he can stay healthy) becomes a tall order come fourth quarter. And Emmett has put on some good weight this offseason and is not afraid of contact either. This team doesn't need a 20+ carry back a game. We need down-hill runners that can wear down a defense in the second half, do their job in pass pro, and don't have bricks for hands. And so far I've been pleased in all of those regards. This will allow plenty of single coverage looks and I'm pretty confident in the WRs on this roster to go make some plays. I believe this is the most stacked WR room we've had in a while. And if you came out of that scrimmage (glorified practice) thinking anyone but DR is the guy, you either watched it blindfolded or are personally related to the other two QBs. Don't get me wrong, I think HH is a solid backup with an upside to see some QB-power around the goal line (although I'm not a fan of switching out guys down there) and I think Kaelin has a really bright future. But DR is special. There will definitely be growing pains but his skill set and intangibles are elite. Everyone talks about DR's arm talent and rightfully so, however, I've been just as impressed with his pocket presence and field vision. That stuff is so hard to teach, and the casual fan has no idea how difficult it is to go through reads while correctly sensing and reacting to the oncoming rushers.

  11. This entire offense is being set up for the pocket passers and they're training Haarberg to work within that. They're not setting this offense up like last year and training the new QBs to work within that style. Everyone needs to take last year's tape and burn it. Yes, it's the same offense in the sense it's the same language and organization and so forth but that QB heavy run style that we were forced to adopt by circumstance is completely gone. You may see an occasional zone read here or there, especially if Haarberg is needed for a sustained time, but Raiola and Kaelin are just not built for that style of play. That's why what Haarberg did this spring was so impressive. He's being asked to play in an offense built for someone else, and I think he's doing a great job. But, there's no QB controversy here. Rhule is just dipping into his psychological bag of tricks to get what he wants from these guys. He knows exactly who his starting QB is.

  17. I thought Haarberg looked like the backup QB and I mean that as a compliment. What do you want your backup to do: don't take unnecessary risks, check down when necessary, throw it away when necessary, get completions and move the chains. He played within himself and listened to his coaching and because he's a very talented guy he can do that and still make some big plays. I said coming in that he was the QB I wanted to see the most because he was the benchmark last year and that benchmark has risen substantially. I thought Kaelin looked like a talented freshman. I've seen some people out there say they were disappointed in him, but it's not a crime for a freshman to play like a freshman. There's a reason why even the most talented freshman QBs rarely play significant time their first year. It's not an easy transition to make and I thought he did some good things and some bad things but overall showed he's a very capable player with an exciting career ahead of him. I don't think it's fair to compare him or Haarberg to Raiola because I'm not sure by the end of the season it'll be fair to compare any college QB to Raiola. I think if the offense continues to make strides this summer and fall (and a lot of people did a lot of good things today) then once Raiola starts stacking games on top of each other and learning from those experiences......I just think his trajectory will be very steep. He just makes things look so easy, and not easy "for a freshman" but easy for anyone. He has the physical tools, the intangibles, the leadership, the work ethic, all of the coaching resources in the world......but he lacks the experience.

  18. The assertion that Trump or Biden would have handled a close election the same way is ludicrous. If we're talking checks and balances, the cornerstone of American democracy has been the peaceful transfer of power, and Donald Trump is the opposite of that. In addition to not attending the inauguration ceremonies -- unlike disgraced popular vote winner Hillary Clinton and every other defeated candidate-- Trump has spent every waking hour spreading election falsehoods, and hailed his J6 supporters as heroes and martyrs while literally promising pardons and vengeance. Although now that you mention it, maybe Al Gore was a big pu&&y for conceding an extremely close election for the "good of the country." However I feel about abortion, I feel more strongly about Supreme Court candidates assuring Congress they will not seek to overturn Roe v Wade in order to secure their nomination. After which, they will very much seek to overturn Roe v Wade because each Supreme Court nominee was handed to Donald Trump on a short list by the Federalist Society, whose main criteria was the judge's willingness to overturn Roe v Wade. It's always fun to pretend it's simply about states rights. By "popular vote" I did not mean the the national popular vote, but the ability of those controlling the local state house to send their own slate of electors if they don't like the electors chosen by the people. That's been happening. The literal removal of checks and balances. However you want to dance around Donald Trump and Russia and dip back to the Obama administration for strained equivalencies, the emergence of a pro-Russia narrative among conservative media and lawmakers can be traced directly to Donald Trump standing next to Vladimir Putin and telling the world he trusted Putin over the unanimous consensus of America's 17 intelligence agencies. In addition to his attempts to weaken NATO while in office, the former President has a plan to end the war if he returns to the Presidency: just give Russia some land: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/04/05/trump-ukraine-secret-plan/ However you want to limit the most insane wing of Republican party to Marjorie Taylor-Greene and some ragtag extremists, they have assumed the power to make or break the Speaker of the House -- not exactly nothing. And while you may not want to call them "leadership" or even "the face" of the Republican Party, it's kinda moot if both the face and leadership of the Republican Party is the utterly bats#!t Donald Trump, doling out favoritism to the most bats#!tty loyalist, while the supposed mainstream of the party angrily rejects a Ron DeSantis or Nikki Haley lifeboat. Presidential immunity is an interesting dilemma, although I think most of us plebes can understand the lines you can't cross, and that trying an ex-President for his criminal civilian behavior does not threaten national security and the social order in the way trying an acting President might. But maybe if we spend enough time musing about the complexities of Presidential immunity the Supreme Court can postpone any decision that might affect the Presidential candidate who stacked it. Why is it so hard for you to accept that everything you believe is horribly wrong?

  19. I love the option as much as the next guy, but year on year there are fewer and fewer coaches that know how to call and teach the option and Satterfield isn't one of them. See all of those screens and RPOs designed to get the ball out quickly. That's what Satterfield does well, but he tends to lose focus of what's working and decides to play with his other toys.

  23. Dang that sucks. Would have been the home run hitter that we needed. Is it me or does all of our rb's look slow? Even Dante Dowdell didn't look fast on his td run. Looks like our running back may have some athleticism but overall speed it seems HH is faster then the whole room which is very telling.

  24. People aged 15-25 want something to be excited about. Sometimes it’s a legitimate thing that the old people don’t have enough energy to get excited about. Sometimes it’s a stupid thing. The hard thing here is the Israel government is s#!tty in multiple ways right now, but the area they are attacking is governed by terrorists and the protestors are being insanely hyperbolic. They want a ceasefire or a permanent end, but ignore the details. E.g. Hamas has not agreed to release the hostages in exchange for a ceasefire.

  27. I know some people don't like the perimeter passing game because of how it was utilized under the previous crew, but if you can combine it with deep threats, crossers, and the running game it becomes extremely difficult for the opposing safeties and corners. We have TE/HB players that can hit the flats, the corners, and attack the seams. Fidone's TD is a zig off a stacked release where he runs a beautiful route on a mismatch. A lot of big, athletic bodies to create mismatches with and I thought for a 'vanilla' spring game we saw a ton. Under center, shotgun, pistol, all sorts of screens, switch releases, stacked releases, compressed sets, spread sets, empty, etc. This offense needs refinement and better execution and all of those sorts of things that come with spring ball, but conceptually you can see where this thing is going and I think it's really exciting. I thought last spring was promising, too, but circumstances meant we didn't get to see that version of the offense. This spring, imo, is a monumental step up from any point last year and while getting more capable QB play is a definite plus, credit to the staff if they can take the types of things we saw today and re-produce that regularly in the fall.

  28. Rushville was our biggest rival growing up. I played against Stoffer his sophomore and junior seasons. He was an incredible athlete. I also pitched against him my middle school years 3x and dude jacked one on me but we won all 3x's. Kelly was well liked in all the neighboring towns. That Rushville class of 82 was really talented. The Hinn family was really athletic and Rushville also had 2 really good lineman. Rushville own us in 81 and reached the C1 Quarterfinals, Crawford owned them in 82 (though I didn't play football my senior year, focused on Rodeo Club instead) and then was rolled in the quarters by Silver Creek.

  35. This is the first time I've seen a recruiting-industry person admit this. They almost always like to say "but there are so many more three-stars, of course there are more three-stars drafted." Which is, of course, true. But the part they usually ignore is the five-stars are supposed to be the can't-miss guys. Best of the best. There are usually 30-35 five-stars in each class. Which means there should be about the same number eligible for the draft each year. If you got people to look at the five-stars in each recruiting class and say they have about a 50/50 chance of being a bust, no one would believe you. But it's the truth. And the four-stars being only about a 25% chance of really panning out is interesting as well. Although there are more four-stars than draft picks so that's not quite as telling.

  38. The man gives a good quote, that's for sure. "It is what it is. It is what it is. They’re going to call D-Bell (Demitrius Bell) and say ‘come here, come there,’ but when he’s hurt, who’s there with him? We are. I just have to coach them all like they’re my younger brother. I don’t like to say sons. I coach them all like they’re my younger brother. I’m hard on them probably, like an older brother is, but I try to give them advice, I try to listen to them. Help them through this. Sometimes they offer you so much money, you’ve got to leave. Coaches complain about it. My assistant coaches do the same thing to me – ‘hey, coach, I got this offer to go there.’ I just want them all to be successful. It’s a sad state. I’ll just say that. It’s a sad state. But it is what it is. And you know what? A lot of people want to come here too. A lot of people want to stay here. Roster numbers are certainly not going to be our issue in terms of having enough good players. I hope everyone saw that today. You saw a lot of guys flashing and doing some things. Maybe I’m thinking through three scrimmages, but we have a lot of depth. Keelan Smith made some big time catches down the stretch. I think we have a lot of guys that can make plays."

  40. Unbelievable - no faith in Russell Zach Wilson? I saw the Nix pick was on Kiper's "headscratchers" but I think he's pretty good. Maybe the pick was a little high, but like you said, they don't have much collateral to deal with for trading picks. McCarthy is one that I don't get the hype. He reminds me of the old Bama QBs where he was just asked to not screw up because the defense and running game would take care of the rest. We'll find out in a few months I guess.
