IMHO, its not appropriate for tv. If its your choice to call attention to yourself "praying" on national television you're doing it for the wrong reasons. 2 hours ago, funhusker said: The religion whose founder explicitly told followers to be modest in prayer really seems to be the one that brags so much about it. You guys are only saying that because it's explicitly spelled out in unambiguous terms in the first part of the first Gospel of the New Testament. Matthew 6: 5-8 5 And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not babble on like pagans, for they think that by their many words they will be heard. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. 1 1 2 Link to comment
Crusader Husker
The difference is he was praying for someone else, not to have it as a show. The Pharisees did it as a show to let everyone know they were already righteous in the eyes of God. To show that they were spiritually above the other people. It was more about themselves and not God or anyone else. 1 2 1 Link to comment

Crusader Husker
For show, not a show. Sorry, I should have dropped the a. And the ESPN comment, that is correct. I watch ESPN for games. I stopped watching them for everything else since the Longhorn Network. 2 Link to comment
knapplc
I don't think Jesus quibbles about ratings. He was pretty clear in his statement about how and how not to pray. Link to comment
Guy Chamberlin
It's an awkward take on the situation, but I did flash on all the professions where someone might drop dead of a heart attack from work-related stress, or all the $18 an hour road construction flagmen who get clipped every year, and how long work is halted in response, or how many millions of people don't stand vigil, give prayers or contribute to your favorite charity, not to mention the lack of first responders mere feet away who give you a fighting chance of living. So yeah. It literally was a show. And this particular Monday Night Football was probably the biggest show of the season. The media dropped everything to report the unprecedented tragedy, but the fact is 850,000 people in the U.S. have a heart attack every year. It's not to take away from Hamlin, who sounds like a great kid who was well-loved, but we do pick and choose the stories we elevate into national events and moral posturing. 1 Link to comment

Engaging can be like going to a Longhorn message board and trying to tell them why they should be Husker fans. Link to comment

This doesn’t make anyones life less valuable though. 1 Link to comment
teachercd
I mean...it happened on live TV. I think anything "big" that happens on live TV gets covered a lot more. Remember Janet Jackson's boob? 2 Link to comment

Outside of "giving thanks", a pretty trivial display of prayer, when did Jesus pray in public? It is in the Gospels that Jesus rarely even prayed WITH his disciples. Link to comment

Ive seen three posts like this in the past 10 minutes on three different sites. Do you know how many front articles there are on Damar. Are you a moderator? 1 Link to comment
