Its decided, Bring Bo back as the ST Coordinator! Bo knows Special teams

Callahan and Bo were actually remarkably good special teams coaches by the numbers, and even Riley was decent. Here are our national SP+ special teams rankings as far back as the numbers go:

From Football Outsiders, a deeper look into the data... As I said, most the time when one phase of ST succeeded another phase tanked. 

 

SFEI Special Teams Ratings (SFEI) represent the per possession scoring advantage a team's combined special teams units would be expected to have on a neutral field against an average opponent. Unadjusted special teams possession efficiency (SPE) is calculated as a function of special teams game splits. Schedule strength is represented by each team's average per possession special teams opponent adjustment (SOA). Field Goal efficiency (FGE) and Opponent Field Goal efficiency (OFG) are the average values generated per field goal attempt as compared with national success rates in proximity to the end zone. Kickoff Return efficiency (KRE) and Kickoff efficiency (KE) are the average values generated per kickoff based on field position at the conclusion of the play. Punt Return efficiency (PRE) and Punt efficiency (PE) are the average values generated per punt based on the field position of the punt team and the field position at the conclusion of the play.

Frost should be sitting down with Moos after every season and doing an evaluation on every single assistant and asking a simple question: 

 

Does this assistant coach give Nebraska the best chance of winning a conference championship? 

 

If the answer is yes, retain the coach.  If the answer is no, then Frost should see if there are viable options for a replacement.  Based upon what I have seen over the past 3 years, I don't believe that we have a top-tier group of assistants that will best position Nebraska to win a conference title.  Moos has indicated a willingness to spend money for the best assistants in the country, so it's up to Frost to put together the best staff possible.

Absolutely NO. Frost gets top 10 or 20 coaching   money, he shouldn’t have big daddy Moos ok his choices. Let the product go the talking. 
 

why doesn’t Moos just do they coaching?

Huh? I am not saying Moos makes the final decisions, but Moos is the one that can go find the dollars to get the best assistants that Frost believes will help the team.  As of right now we have not yet seen any changes to the staff, so that tells me that Frost believes he has the best staff possible to win a conference championship.

No. An AD should not, in any way, be involved with the operation side of any sport.  You think Saban does this? 
 

Your post is just short of calling Frost a poosie.

Since we don’t have a mass exodus incoming, I think our special teams gets better next year cuz the players that are coming back/staying means we use more athletes that need playing time, guys trying to get on the field, competing for starting jobs want to play. 
special teams get better when the starters are solid.

tOSU has Matt Barnes coaching their ST with a quality control guy helping.  His whole coaching career has revolved around defense and ST.  It isnt some analyst doing it.

I was wondering as he listed STC/S but then also said ST done by a quality control analyst.  I think it's crystal clear that top teams spend way more attention to ST than NU does, however you title the lead person.

I wonder if dawson doesnt take over coaching ST in the future with input from rutledge. And i wonder if having a full spring and fall where they could put more emphasis into ST during practices will help. I also wonder if two guys working together for the first time didnt lead to some miscommunication at times. 

 

Then again what do i know. Coaching is easy and anyone on a message board can do it.

Sorry, but this does happen often.  Pelini used to meet with Osborn all the time after the season ended to discuss how things were going on the team and if there should be any changes.  This is not saying that the AD makes the final decisions, but the AD is the boss of the football coach and has a right to discuss the staff with the head coach, just as any 2nd line leader or boss in America will discuss personnel with their first line leaders.  Moos also is the one that would have to secure funds if Frost would want a new assistant that will cost more than what we currently have.  Frost just doesn't do that on his own.
