Hagg
Coach Joseph indicated that he's deployed Chinander as more or less the safeties coach. Travis Fisher will be more closely involved with the corners and nickles, he said. I was hoping any announcements about Chinander would have to do with him leaving the staff altogether.. but this does seem to lessen his overall role a bit. I'm thinking that if Coach Joseph does well enough to be promoted from interim to full HC we may be stuck with Chinander. Unless he's got plans for removing him down the line at some point and promoting Fish. Quote Link to comment
ColoradoHusk
If Mickey Joseph goes from interim head coach to full time head coach after this season, I would fully expect for him to have the freedom whatever staff he wants. This would include getting rid of every current assistant coach, if he felt the need. 4 Quote Link to comment

But Mickey has his plate absolutely full at the moment with what he's just been thrust into I'm not sure that firing your defensive coordinator 5 days before the OU game is the right move. And to think you're going to fire your DC and expect to do a 180 in the middle of the season is next to impossible. I just hope he can make these guys play to the correct gap and get to the right zone, that would be a start. 6 1 Quote Link to comment

Mickey probably hires his brother for DC if he gets the head coach gig. 1 1 1 Quote Link to comment

Now, I fully suspect that he will be gone at the end of the year unless he somehow does a miraculous turnaround in the defense and changes how they play. That's almost impossible to do mid season. But, anyone who thinks he's not still the DC isn't understanding what I heard Joseph say. If Chinander isn't the DC anymore, then who is? 4 Quote Link to comment
Guy Chamberlin
Joseph had five days to take over the team and prepare for Oklahoma. Then we have two weeks before the next game. Chinander could easily be let go on Sunday and everyone goes into full interim mode. If the defense comes together and looks respectable on Saturday? It means something's working and Chin probably stays in his new role for the remainder of the season. 1 Quote Link to comment

Worked for Minnesota a few years ago. I'm just not sure we have the right guy to take over already on staff, and that makes it impossible. Quote Link to comment

It would be very unfair for MJ to be judged, weighed and measured by Chins inadequacy. Still, he will. He is there because it's tough to replace him this week. Like Scott, it's probably best to get from out and underneath Chins ASAP. I hope that happens after the OU game. I don't even care if we win that game ... Chins is not the guy to move forward with after his 4.5 years of work. I'm with another poster, his brother would be an intriguing choice if MJ secures the head coach position long term. It's all before him and us. I'll be more than curious how and when our beloved Huskers get out from under this train wreck. 1 Quote Link to comment
Jason Sitoke
Chinander being on the staff at all is still worrisome. Not even sure if he's up to being a towel guy at a P5 program. 2 Quote Link to comment

We have numerous former coaches as analysts--I'm sure one of them could step in on the defensive side of things. Again, we're not asking for a Top 20 defense--merely a competent (Top 50, 60) one to help out the offense. 1 1 Quote Link to comment

I'd be surprised if you're correct about that. He's calling it "two DCs" yes. But any coach who is given a role of emphasis on particular player position is, especially in the ways MJ put it, is becoming a specialist for that portion of the squad. Yeah Chin's salary isn't decreased or his official title, but I think we're seeing an important change in his duties, again especially as we see Fish designated to those other two positions: nickles and corners. gossamorharpy
I just hope we see a defense with a pulse. Perhaps one that actually covers receivers at the line and not just play overtop by 5-7 yards in the secondary. We're out here acting like we're squaring up against patrick mahomes every week giving up hail marys of 60+ yards meanwhile FCS level qbs are cutting us up with 5-7 yard slants that most high school qbs can complete 2 Quote Link to comment
The Dude
It really surprises me he's still on the staff. Splitting the secondary duties was a wise decision. Mickey seemed baffled we weren't doing it already. I just don't know if Chinander is a good enough coach to make much of a difference with the safeties. Very little of what I've seen the last five years suggests Chinander is qualified to be a P5 defensive coordinator. Perhaps he is qualified to be a P5 safeties coach? We'll see. Quote Link to comment
