Well, this sh*+ is disguising. The year I left, there was a campus shooting at my university. Last year, there was a shooting at a JV basketball game at the HS near our house. My son was in middle school then and not in attendance, but some of his friends were.

Mind you these three events (including the one yesterday) occurred when I lived in three separate states.

The top several Nebraska hs players should *always* get offers.  For too long now we've been slow playing some of the top Nebraska recruits in the hope of getting them to walk-on.  This tactic has bitten us in the ass several times in recent years, causing us to lose top notch recruits from Nebraska because some other team offered them first and got them to commit.  /gets off soapbox.  

I'm not saying there haven't been mistakes (probably a lot, and the thing with Bryson Williams still ticks me off), but you have to draw the line somewhere every year. Some years that line might be 2 players. Other years it might be 6.

I do think if you have a player of equal talent in Nebraska and equal talent anywhere else, you always go for the one in Nebraska. Maybe even if it's lesser talent, because their motivation to help the team will likely be higher, and the chance they transfer lower.

Don't the top players in Nebraska also all have offers from Purdue already too?

And considering a couple of those top players are transplants, I don't think we'll bat 1.000, but we should do better than .500. 

Definitely. The east coast states, by enlarge, really fall short in that department.

My fav place in the LA area was a little hole in the wall place south of LAX in El Segundo.  The place was called La Paz and no one spoke a word of English.  Not even the waitresses.  The menus were in Spanish too.  I used to go there at least once a week.  Best Mexican food I've ever had.  Then it got closed down by an INS raid.  LOL

Yeah I love how they compare our records over the last 5 years but iowa always misses Ohio st, mich, mich st, Penn st. We always draw the best of the other division.

It's not a good look for the B1G when it stacks Wiscy with UM/MSU/OSU next year and Iowa/NU plays just one of those 3. Iowa's cupcake schedule provided an embarrassing result in the Rose Bowl, a bad national look for our "2nd best team" in conference. OSU or Michigan would have been better representatives

I always say the division winner should be decided by games played in the division, then common cross over, then conference record. Comparing apples to apples.

Agreed, Huskerzoo. As a new assistant professor, you got to like hearing they put a cap on the number of R01 grants and grant dollars per PI. This breaks some of that "fat cat" mentality and spreads the funding around, hopefully benefiting new and med-level faculty researchers.

That would be the hope. they already had stuff to promote junior faculty. Unfortunately granting works a little bit like ponzy schemes. You need to have gotten grants as a grad student to get them as a post doc to get r21s to get r01s. There's still a weird system.

Grant funding begets grant funding as a student or as a faculty member, but during the transition, it is more about your productivity (number of high tier publications) and how cutting edge and innovative your research is. Not to mention the prestige of your institute. If you notice, not much of that speaks to the merit of your research, so you are right to the extent that it is a weird system.

They tried all kinds of punishments to fix the fumble problems over the past few years. Had little success. In the end it boils down to the players taking responsibility for their performance. Looks like Mr. Finnin has bought into that. Good to see.

Knap, that's not quite how behavior works. Yes they have to take responsibility, but there are also things that can be done to shape it.
