The 2022 Congressional Elections

This is paywalled but I found a quote.

NYT/Siena College poll found independent female voters in particular swung dramatically to the right in the past month, despite Democrats' focus on abortion rights.

"In September, they favored Democrats by 14 points. Now, independent women backed Republicans by 18 points— a striking swing given the polarization of the American electorate and how intensely Democrats have focused on that group and on the threat Republicans pose to abortion rights," the paper reported.

This is pretty catastrophic news for Democrats.

I was trying to think this through. Latinos are majority Catholic and very family oriented. I am wondering if the abortion ruling didn't have as big of an impact on them. I am also curious how the border districts play out. They always seem to go to the Democrats. Maybe the economy and inflation is their biggest issue.

As Bill Clinton so eloquently said in 1992 "It is the economy stupid, it is the economy"

People lump all latinos together - very different priorities and voting trends for Puerto Ricans' vs. Mexicans vs. Cubans for instance.  GOP gained a lot in FL in 2020 for instance - mostly Cuban background, they are far more conservative in many regards, and have issue with Dems going back as far as Bay Of Pigs.  They also don't see themselves as "immigrants" like mexicans who cross the border, and crime is a big factor for them.

Good points. Cubans and their fear of socialism/communism, based on their experience. crime is a good point too.  I am still curious how the border will play out in south Texas, NM and AZ.

I thought of that too….George Bush Senior learned that lesson the hard way.
