All dictators hug flags? Or, all flag huggers are dictators? Which way was she going with that nonsensical tweet?

Remember that line of questioning when you hear people comparing Venezuela to AOC's Green New Deal.

Well, there's a little more to work with in the Green Book Report than someone hugging their country's flag.

That’s how most jokes work though. They exaggerate. And the Venezuela comparison started long before anyone had ever heard of AOC, any time a Democrat brought up universal healthcare or any other thing that tax money could potentially pay for.

This is purely anecdotal, but my teenagers taking history in super liberal Marin County public schools studied Russia under Stalin and were made keenly aware of the brutality and death toll. The teachers weren't comparing Nazism to Communism, they were telling the story of history. Totalitarian rulers tend to dominate, and their political party is Totalitarianism.

In middle school they read and discussed Orwell's Animal Farm, where the entire point was how Communism betrayed its own people.

Sometimes conservative intellectuals get a persecution complex about the liberal elites quashing conservative voices. Sometimes they're right. But most of the time those liberal elites are just challenging guys like Dinesh D'Souza on their interpretation of history and political science, which ranges from dubious cherry-picking to downright falsehoods.

And you can't have this conversation without discussing the Texas Schoolbook industry. Can't wait for that video on Prager U.

But.....that’s not the right narrative.
