  1. Put down the tomatoes, don’t throw them at me. I drank the koolaide by the gallon this summer and still have some leftovers in my fridge that I sneak off and drink sometimes. I love this coach, and each week I love this team more and more. So hear me out. Even I’ll conceed that OSU outclasses us enough at this point in the season that we probably can’t compete this year. But that’s not true for the other 6. It’s going to take injury luck and continued improvement each week. But if we can find a way to snag a win this weekend, take one game at a time, view it as championship weekend every week with a bowl game up for grabs, it could happen still. If we can beat NW, then we should be able to matchup with the likes of Minnesota and Iowa as well. Bethune and Illinois are the easiest W’s left, obviously, so if we can keep focus and not pull the traditional “NU forgets to show up,” thing, those go our way. That leaves MSU, which haven’t looked unstoppable imo. If you can find a way to play that game above you heads a bit, again, knowing the postseason lies on the other side, it’s not unreasonable. This weekend is huge. May be the last great chance at gigantic direction change for 2018.

  2. Reed had plenty of swag when he make believe lit up the Wisconsin rb.

  3. It sounds strange, but I liked what I saw last night. -The defense had a tremendous burdon and they gave the offense every chance to make it a game in the first half. -It doesn't help after a 7 minute first quarter drive, Nebraska had a 1st down, then penalty, 2nd down, 3rd down, punt. Back on the field. -I think the defense played overall gutty. You can complain about individuals, but I saw a team that fought hard against a great Wisconsin offensive line. -I can't wait to see the look on Scott Frost's face when he sees the Paul Chryst "FU MFers". I think Chryst was offended that Frost went for it on 4th and 11. Like Frost didn't respect his defense, which he might not. -Paul Chryst is probably mad that Nebraska fired his friend Mike Riley, since he knew Riley better than Riley knew himself -As strange as it sounds, I'm much less pissed off after this game than after the 2017 game -Nebraska should have went for two in the 4th, but I think even Frost knew a win was a longshot. But still... -The dam breaking on J. Taylor was as predictable as it was long. At some point, fatigue, mental and physical, was going to set in -Nebraska is going to have to break the 30-point barrier to win this year -The Huskers have seven games left. Right now, we need a win like no other. That being said, a 4-3 (Bethune, Illinois, Minn, Northwestern should be...pardon the expression, winnable/competitive. Ending to the season with a winning record(and an improvement over 2017) would give me great optimism for 2019. I think it's doable. -Adrian Martinez looked 100% healthy for the first time since Colorado. Overall, I thought he played ok. The stats are a bit misleading. But if the game starts to slow down, watch out...Last nights game should boost his confidence -No use complaining about the refs until Nebraska gets more competitive and cuts back on the dumb penalties that put Nebraska in 1st and 20 in the first quarter on the road vs Wisconsin. When your the most penalized team in the nation, refs are more apt to 'find' penalties (aka Foster's 'block in the back'). -About time Caleb Lighthorne got benched. I'm sure there are better punters enrolled at UNL who are not on the football team who are more effective then him -The power of the bench is the one power Frost needs to use and use more of. Maybe he was waiting until after 4 or 5 games to use it. -Brett Pickering looks to be on the right track. -Saw too many low snaps to Martinez. -Never thought I'd say this, but I miss Matt Millen. Get well soon. -For the first time since joining the Big Ten, I see a schematic path to toppling Wisconsin. I don't think Wisconsin's secondary can match up with a speedy wide receivers, high tempo offense, and a mobile/accurate QB. -I don't know if it was smart of Frost to go for it on 4th and 11 at the end of the first half, but I think he's trying to send a larger message and lay a foundation a la Frank Reich going for the win against the Texans a few weeks back and Doug Pederson for the Eagles in 2016. -I could care less about any 'records' broken on a 0-5 team. I think this team is closer now that some players are gone. I think this team is better now they are gone. I know people talk about swagger and getting into people's faces. Right now, the offense doesn't trust the defense, the defense doesn't trust the offense, and no one likes the special teams. The team, especially going against Wisky and Michigan, went in expecting to lose. That's why they are congratulating each other for good plays even when Nebraska is down 2 or 3 scores. Players are doing what they can do. They practice and train hard, but don't see a path to victory. If this team starts to smell victory or gets a taste of it, that may all change. Right now, we need a W bad. Keep the faith. GBR.

  4. Florida won the SEC East in 2016, went 9-4 and won the Outback Bowl beating Iowa 30-3. They had a much more talented team to turn around.

  5. You guys do know that Brett Kavanaugh came up the ranks as a s#!t stirrer for Ken Starr and an assigned leaker for the Bush administration. He has a long personal history of character assassination, and made his prepared statement about partisan retribution. It's bizarre the people that conservatives choose to pity.

  6. I learned that Husker fans are finally more appreciative of a pass-happy offense, and far more forgiving when the offense abandons the run, when the defense gives up 40+ points a game and when the team leads the NCAA in penalties on the way to an 0 -5 start. Seriously, can you imagine if a poster last year pointed to our awesome passing stats as a sign of optimism in a 0-5 season?

  8. Kavanaugh may end up being a good Justice, but his overly emotional performance in the Senate testimony hearing shows he is not fit to be on the SCOTUS. Time will tell.

  9. Ugh another pessimistic thread. I'm tired the negativity, there's 7 wins still on the table.

  10. I hate losing. I despise the fact we are as bad as we are. But, have to say, I’m still enjoying the season because I believe we are seeing a foundation being built and the culture bring changed like Frost wants. That at makes it much more fun and interesting than last year.

  12. ^^^^^^^^^THIS. I've sobered up from any Kool-Aid I drank during the summer. We're 0-5. This is a serious comment though - Frost will make Paul Chryst look like a little rag doll when this thing gets going.

  13. I was at the game. I guess for one Martinez reminds me of so many other quarterbacks we've had the past several years. He can make a great play one play and then the very next make a horrible decision that kills a drive and forces us to punt. Over throws, several dropped int's, the fumble. Holding on to the ball instead if simply throwing it out of bounds after clearly being outside of the tackle box. Calab Lightbourne might be the worst punter to ever put on a Nebraska uniform. I actually said out loud 'how does this guy even get on the field'???? Thank goodness they replaced him with Armstrong. Bootle got beat repeatedly so I'm not feeling the love for him at all either unlike others apparently. The line did a decent job at times but the penalties and when they get beat in pass pro they got beat. Just unbelievable. Their penalties killed several big plays but constantly seeing holding calls from the very same guys repeatedly. It's unacceptable. Their bad tendencies are deeply ingrained. Maurice Washington needs the ball in his hands and should be (and should have been already) our primary running back. Without question. Feed him. Frost needs his guys in there. Bottom line. Looking forward to Evanston next week regardless. GBR.

  14. In 2016, Nebraska lost to Iowa 40-10. Florida beat that Iowa team 30-3. Similar records sure. Similar talent level no way. As far as transfers, I know Florida had a few, but I don't know who or how many. I also don't think anyone was ran off from NU. I think players decided they didn't fit or didn't want to fit Frost's offense and he didn't try to stop them from leaving.

  20. Look, growing up watching the Huskers as a teenager in the 90's, any loss would ruin my fall, let alone my Saturday. Right now, Frost and the program need a win badly. I can tell you Paul Chryst would rather go up against his buddy Mikey Riley than Scott Frost. While Wisconsin is big and powerful, Nebraska's passing game and mobile QB can and will give Wisconsin fits in the future. The game needs to slow down for Adrian Martinez. While his stats were gaudy, he missed some opportunities that were learning experiences. If he can grow and capitalize on them, watch out. I think Frost's scheme offensive scheme of speedy WR, running game, and a mobile/accurate QB could give Big Ten West opponents fits. We need to trust the process and allow Frost the time to develop his offense. Last night, I saw progress and a path forward for success vs. Wisconsin. The talent, size, and development gap between Nebraska and Wisconsin on the front lines can't be made up in one recruiting class, nor one offseason of a new strength and conditioning. The program was really at rock bottom this time last year. The program needs to get that first win and break that streak. The players don't know how to win, don't believe they can win, and are frustrated as hell. But if they keep pushing, they will get there, and hopefully before Bethune Cookman. The Huskers are laying the foundation right now and it's starting with the basement. Basements aren't pretty, but no sense filling up the basement to put a mobile home over it. Build it right.

  21. I thought Martinez, Washington, Ozigbo, Spielman, and Morgan played with some “swagger” tonight. They looked confident that they could do things against Wisky’s D, and they did. The rest of the team, however, it’s hard to play with swagger when you are getting knocked around all over the field. Then when Reed thinks he makes a big hit and celebrates while the RB is still running with the ball, Reed looks foolish.

  23. When we joined the Big Ten I toured some of the message boards from other teams. Almost every one of them said to be ready for some really bad officiating. It's been seven plus years. Nothing I've seen has led me to believe those folks were wrong. These guys are bad sometimes. Really, really bad. That doesn't mean Nebraska isn't undisciplined, making stupid mistakes, and getting caught. They are. Every game. A lot. A ton of these calls are legit & should be called. But the refs still suck. And once a team gets a reputation for penalties, refs are human and humans follow trends. It can be both that Nebraska is undisciplined and the refs are making bad calls.

  24. Majority of the penalties tonight were for offensive holding . That’s a clear sign of a physical mismatch.

  25. You truly don't think the coaches are addressing penalties? Seriously?......

  26. I think this week’s penalties were different than last week’s. The holding penalties by the o-line were due to being overmatched by a very good Wisconsin D. They are just better than NU in the trenches right now. I didn’t see the late hit/dumb penalties like which happened last week.

  28. I am not sure I would use what is shown "on here" in this Huskerboard P&R board as a forum of wisdom, intellect and impartiality. Over 80% of the threads and posts I have read are anti-Trump or anti-GOP that anything posted here must be taken with a grain of salt.

  31. Michigan State look pretty uninspired this season and is beatable. Basically if we have 500 yards of offense like we've had three times this season, don't have offensive penalties that stall drives, and improve on special teams yes, we could win six.

  32. I was just thinking to myself if we beat northwestern how long would it take before someone posted that bowl game was still technically possible. I should have guessed this
    2 points
  33. Well there's not really any external evidence that they are. If anything, even if the penalties are somewhat different in nature, they're coming at worse and worse times further into the season than they were at the start.

  34. Yet they managed 4 wins in 2017. That's the team Mullen took over. So far they're 5-1 with a win over a top 5 opponent.

  35. I can’t remember which podcast I listened to in the pre-season, but someone mentioned that everyone looks pretty good when the play is simple and in front of them, and that really rings true. Our OLine actually looks pretty impressive sometimes when they know their assignment and can just go cancel out a guy. But we heard about how whenever Chinander brought something different in practice, it really screwed up the OLine and the offense had a bad day. Not a surprise that it happens in season as well. Defensively, it really hurts not having Mick. He’s a game changer when healthy and we just aren’t deep enough yet to lose someone like that for an extended amount of time. Then you throw in Ferguson and Honas and we just can’t absorb that yet. Agree with everyone that there was some lack of effort at times but I was also fairly pleased that the team didn’t just quit. Moral victory, but I do think it’s a positive. Love the future of this offense. Just have to continue to get deeper and cut the dumb penalties. Frost is the right guy and will get us on track. Big game at Northwestern now - an opportunity to turn around this season.

  38. This may be my last time contributing to these threads. It's very much the same s#!t everytime. Loved Maurice Washington ballin' out this entire game. Every time he touched the ball it was usually good for us. Spielman looked back to form and had a great game. Morgan was solid. AMart could have played better. Ball security is an issue. Accuracy also needs to improve...throws high or at guys feet at times. I want more fire out of this guy. This guy is getting a lot of hype but hasn't won a game. I would be pissed by now. Frost needs to dial it up too...the penalties are killing us and talk is cheap. The defense...ugh, still under construction. Textbook how not to tackle on some really bad missed tackles tonight. Lack of pass rush and run stuffing leads to losing. We need to recruit for a top 10 class. We basically know the few guys that make the score look respectable...other than them it is pretty thin.

  39. I didn't notice them getting knocked back in the 3rd qtr but by the 4th, yes. Got to have good depth on the DL to go up against Wiscy. No Mick hurt.

  40. I just wish that the team was putting up big stats and points from the beginning of the game, and not when they are down by 2-3 scores in the 2nd half. Garbage time stats suck.

  41. Amazes me.... we have idiots calling for certain coaches heads and asking if we can hire other coaches in the game thread. We have people thinking the scheme doesn’t work. ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? We are playing with recruits from a 4-3..... remember that we only switched to this 3-4 a year ago.... it takes time to get the right players in here. Come one people. Grow up

  42. Offensive holding? No we aren't. We had 1 against Colorado We had 2 against Troy We had 1 against Michigan We had 3 against Purdue We had 5 tonight (two were off-setting so they aren't officially in the total) So we've never even had six in a single game, much less average six.

  43. Here in a nutshell is what happens each year we are struggling: Fire the DC, run the ball more, stop passing so much, power football wins, etc. Not going to disagree with some of those things, but its clearly not that simple is it? We stopped developing our players a long time ago. Partly because we have a win now mentality, forget the future, win now. Were not Alabama, Florida St, Clemson, Texas, OU, or Ohio St. We don't have that kind of recruiting base, never have had that. We have to recruit 3 and 4 star talent and build them into solid college players first. Those teams above don't have to wait to get instant gratification. They recruit the best each season, and win most of there games based on talent first, and coaching second. The pipeline didn't start here in one season, it was built over years and maintained for years. Allow that to happen now, and this will be a good thing in few more seasons. This staff hasn't really ever had a chance to see thru a full 4 year cycle of recruiting and building on that yet. So relax some and give this time. So what if we go 3-9 this season. So what.
