  2. I guess what I'm really trying to say is that this whole wall fiasco is based on an idiot president trying to keep a ham-fisted campaign promise to people who don't understand the issue at all.

  3. Just want to step back from the process and point something out. We have 25 commits in a pretty decent class. We still have probably more very good players very interested in coming than we have spots for. I remember many years when we got to this point in the process and we were grabbing warm bodies. It's a nice change.

  4. Saying illegal immigration isn't a problem is sticking your head in the sand. We need legal immigrants in this county and people coming into the country need to do it legally. HOW we accomplish that is where the debate needs to be. Our immigration laws are pathetic. It's extremely difficult for someone to become legal. No, it shouldn't just be sign a piece of paper and done. But, it definitely needs to be MUCH easier than it is. The biggest issue with this stupid wall is that it's 95% a political grandstanding by Trump. The majority of illegals don't come across that border. So....why is it that that seems to be the ONLY place he's concentrating? Answer.....because stoping those brown people gets his base all lathered up.

  6. Numbers are a bit fluid until the 2019 class is finished and see who leaves after this semester. But reports are the staff is still planning on 22-25 at this point. Numbers for each position are just my guess right now based on need and current roster. We'll get a better idea what the staff is looking for in the coming months. Just a reminder that my criteria for this list is to try to keep it to guys who seem to be legitimately interested in Nebraska, which in my book mainly means setting up a visit or having us in their Top 5/10/whatever list. There are a ton of guys who say they're interested who never end up even visiting. So the list is pretty small right now but there are a few guys who have put out a favorites list and we'll start to see more as guys visit this spring. I'm sure I've missed a few so let me know if you notice someone. Current Scholarships/Commits QB - 1 - LOGAN SMOTHERS RB - 1-2 - WR - 3-4 - Zavier Betts, Xavier Watts TE - 1 - OT - 2-3 - Reece Atteberry, Turner Corcoran OG/C - 1-2 - Carson Lee NT - 1-2 - Kevon Billingsley, Nash Hutmacher, Aidan Keanaaina DE - 1-2 - ILB - 2-3 - OLB - 2-3 - Ben Kreul CB - 2-3 - S - 1-2 -

  8. AND the Republicans controlled the House and the Senate for the past two years, there is no reason why this couldn't have been approved then if Republicans believed funding the construction of the wall was the correct thing to do.

  9. Building walls instead of bridges is usually a pretty profound metaphor, but we literally need to be building bridges instead of walls according to the American infrastructure. Makes business sense, too.

  10. It seems like there's some apples and oranges comparisons in here. As far as whether illegal immigration is a net negative, B.B. and StPaul seem like you're talking about the morality involved in following or breaking the law, whereas Moiraine focused on the overall effects of illegal immigration on the country as a whole. You can all be right - I thought everyone made valid points. Personally I think the wall is a really stupid waste of money. As far as that Mr. Ortiz, even good people can have stupid, flawed ideas. Using him is a bit of an appeal to authority argument, isn't it? The whole thing is a good case study in not believing automatically believing something just because someone powerful told it to you. Like the migrant caravan that magically became a crisis right before elections. Did anyone with half a brain really believe that was an emergency?

  17. We don't have a shutdown topic, so I thought I'd make one. I don't think Trump is going to give, so the Republicans will have to override the veto. Hard to imagine that happening either, but the elections are coming up. Right now they're refusing to do the right thing because their Trump supporting constituents would get upset if they overruled him. But I think they're going to lose more votes than they keep by doing nothing and hopefully they'll realize that soon. As for the Democrats, I don't really want them to cave unless they get something out of it. The wall is a stupid idea, and they shouldn't give in because our president is a child who couldn't get Mexico to pay for his dumb idea.

  23. As I stated before on here, it's another deterrent. If it's consistently installed throughout the southern border (or where an area's topography will allow), I believe it would cut down on illegal immigration (notice I didn't say eliminate). Besides, I'd rather be wasting money on our own soil, as opposed to throwing it away somewhere overseas. Why does aid have to be required to enter into a trade agreement with another country? Are we exchanging aid for exports? Maybe we are, I couldn't tell you. But, I would imagine that we're paying for other country's exports, while also supplying aid. And not receiving aid from the U.S. doesn't justify a country's population running to our doorstep. Not to me, anyways. How are their problems because of us? Because we may choose to withdraw aid? Aiding other countries is not our responsibility. And while I sympathize with those families, it simply isn't the responsibility of the U.S. to be every refugee's huckleberry. It's a very harsh truth, but a truth nonetheless.

  25. Moiraine has a point. One hell of a lot of our foreign financial aid is done to secure relationships and countries we need access to to supply our need for things like oil. Now....we seem to have some people who want to get rid of the foreign aid and at the same time, do away with any funding of alternative energies. This seems to be a combination that doesn't go well together. Another point that needs to be made about this entire issue. Years ago, we started deporting illegals who were involved with gang activity. I think we can all agree that this was a good idea. However, what that did was deport those gangs to places like Honduras where they have thrived and terrorized the entire country. NOW...we have families fleeing those areas where the gangs are powerful....and fleeing to the US. That's what's making up a large portion of these caravans we are currently seeing. It's not gang members trying to get in...the vast majority is families trying to flee the gangs we deported to their country. Well...there's a very strong argument to be made ( and I would support it) to now help places like Honduras deal with these issues. If we can help them deal with the gangs and drug lords, families would not be fleeing at the rate they are to the US. It's easy to proclaim foreign aid needs to stop, but there are consequences to those actions.

  28. We have to play more guys if we want any chance to make a run in the conference tournament or NCAA Tournament. Amir Harris and Nana Akenten have shown me enough to get minutes on the floor. Borchardt can (and should) play in the right matchups. I know Tim likes to keep a short bench but these guys are clearly exhausted and its only going to get worse when we get into tournament play

  30. Also, we need to stop using this $5 billion figure for the wall. That's just the down-payment. Cautious non-partisan estimates are $21 billion for construction and perhaps $500 million a year in maintenance. If it goes the way of many ambitious and hurried government contracts, it could hit $70 billion. While no doubt helpful to the border patrol, they would still have to police the wall much the way they police the empty spaces. It would mean an increase, not a decrease, in personnel and resources.

  31. Good news: Rutgers and PSU are still pretty bad Bad news: Illinois just beat Minny by 30, their 5 star PG/SG has gone for 20+ four out of the last five games and their gimmicky defense can cause problems. Good news: Michigan is due for a loss...who will be the team to beat them in conference? Bad news: Huskers have zero bench at all and the Big Ten is a freaking grind.

  32. Jaywalking is illegal too. That doesn’t mean it’s a negative or that we should spend a bunch more $ to stop the jaywalking epidemic. I think the status quo on jaywalking is fine. I agree with the last sentence - that’s a big part of why illegal immigration is a debate.

  34. It's still illegal. Just because they aren't committing additional crimes at a higher rate as a US citizen is not relevant. And whether they "help" the economy or not is debatable

  35. If illegal immigrants are helping the economy and not committing crimes at a higher rate, they aren’t a negative. They just aren’t as ideal as legal immigrants. I’m talking macro level stuff here. If they aren’t costing us a lot of $ we shouldn’t throw a lot of $ at them.

  36. Is it so hard to figure out what I’m saying that you get it that wrong? Woah. You do the same thing when you say Democrats want open borders. I’m not convinced illegal immigration is a negative, as it currently stands. That includes how we are currently dealing with it. We are stopping plenty of illegal immigrants. I think most illegal immigrants that actually make it here aren’t damaging the country in any way. They commit crimes at a lower rate than citizens. They do jobs many citizens aren’t willing to do and for less money. We don’t need to spend more resources as a country to stop a problem that isn’t really a problem. The status quo is fine.

  37. There needs to be legal recourse for the trustees. Those “alternatives” were absolutely not suitable investments and it doesn’t take a genius to know that. These alternatives are also illiquid and pay extremely high commissions to the person who sold them. Seems to me the trustees were acting in their own best interests.

  40. The Dems smell blood in the water (can sharks smell blood ) and rightly so. Resigned or be impeached. There was a period when the Nixon probably knew when he was toast - when the WH tapes were 'discovered' via John Dean's testimony and more so when it was discovered that there was the gap in the tape. Nixon was dead man walking but he was able to walk for many months until it finally came to a point where he had to resign. I think the Trump dominoes will fall quicker. Nixon, up to watergate, could have been considered a decent president and he had won a 49 state landslide reelection. So he had some loyalty within the party and the public to hold things together for a period of time. While the congressional repubs have shown stupidity by tying their boats to Trump, I think that when the evidence comes out, they won't be able to withstand the tidal wave that will come against Trump and hopefully will remember that their loyalty belongs to the Constitution and the people first. VP Pence should start getting his SOTUS ready - he may be presenting one mid summer or earlier https://thehill.com/homenews/house/425973-intel-dem-trump-must-resign-or-be-impeached-if-report-about-directing-cohen-to

  41. So the (presumably) Muslim (presumably) terrorists are sneaking into the country through the undefended southern border to wreak havoc on our poor, undefended country, and whilst sneaking, are casually leaving laying around their revered prayer mats. This is perfectly logical in cofveve land.

  42. I would put the last 5 in one big pot and you can pull whichever one out randomly. I do believe Thompkins will redshirt though. Getting Mills in the RB room is huge as long as he actually makes it to campus in shape. Not getting here till Summer diminishes his ability to benefit from our S&C program. The good thing is, he has Div 1 experience and proven he can produce at this level. AND.....the RB position is possibly the easiest position to learn the playbook for on offense.
