  1. It sucks, nobody disagrees. But our country has to many selfish individuals who equated doing the bare minimum, mask wearing and social distancing, to some form of government overreach. Our society ignored science. Losing football is one the many consequences. If you want somebody to blame, look in the mirror or at anybody not wearing a mask.

  2. Won't make it past the week, maybe not past tomorrow. Winter is coming, and it's gonna suck. Anyone still saying things like "this is a hoax, masks don't work", here you go. This is all your doing. Enjoy.

  3. Presidents cancel a season in which pretty solid testing procedures are in place, but gladly will welcome how many students to their campuses, living in dorms, eating in the cafeteria, attending classes etc based on what an honors system

  4. L A M E But expected. Special thanks to the people that needed a haircut, that HAD to have their freedom nachos, that HAD to show how tough they were, that HAD to let us know it was a hoax, that HAD to peacefully protest, that HAD to form an autonomous country.

  6. With more college programs and conferences cancelling their seasons, the question to ask now is what is the long-term future of football in a Covid World. People are beginning to realize that Covid may never go away. It may always be with us as a daily plague affecting everything we do for a very long time to come. Some people are placing their faith in a vaccine. But vaccines don’t work against a virus that mutates like Covid does. It is a moving target, always one step ahead of our attempts to get at it. It sits all around us and just laughs at us. Dr. Anthony Fauci, whom many believe is some kind of scientific guru worthy of his own trading card picture set, was just quoted about the awaited-for vaccine: “The chances of it being 98% effective is not great”. They are shooting for some percentage of it working for some people, but they have no real idea. But they don’t want you to know that they have no real idea. As for football, how does anybody play football in a world where Covid doesn’t go away? You can’t play in a bubble. You can’t have hundreds (or for the pros thousands) of guys jammed in together somewhere for long periods of time and think that would work. You can’t play with masks on without suffocating. You can’t “Social Distance!” You can only go so long with “These Extraordinary Times!” and “These Challenging Times!” and all these other blaring characterizations they keep throwing at us. Players and coaches can’t live for many months apart from their family or can they be told to forfeit trying to live some kind of normal life. Colleges can’t live without those big-time dollars coming in to feed the scholastic machine. Businesses that rely on football are slowly withering away. The dominoes will fall and everything is up for grabs. Have we seen our last football game for the next two years? Five years? Forever? And if we have, how does the State of Nebraska and all of Husker Nation deal with that part of our soul being ripped out? You really have to wonder if football has a future in a Covid world.

  7. I think if there was consistency and a rationale from the get go, we wouldn't be where we are. I truly believe if Trump would have said no interstate travel outside of essential deliveries and demanded governors make statewide proclamations about mitigation methods necessary for the state to get to a point where the virus is at a level that has been deemed safe by officials, then we can monitor a "re-opening". This is an issue that "local" government can't handle because of the amount of interactions between neighborhoods, counties, etc... I get that Nebraska doesn't equal New York. But to pretend Omaha doesn't equal Elkhorn and Gretna is silly... I'm tired of watching people "in charge" punt the ball and then complain the waterboy can't field it...

  8. All good points. The initial goal with this virus was to flatten the curve to allow time for making equipment and having hospital capacity. Now the goal seems to be locking down as much as possible even if the curve has flattened. Football players risk long term damage to their bodies and brains every time they take the field. They should have the option of choosing if they are willing to risk getting Covid. If the BIG 10 shuts down sports they should also close all dorms and buildings where students will gather. Consistency will be key for leaders to earn respect.

  10. I get cancelling, I do...but...how do you have kids on campus and cancel games? Like...UNL campus is basically a petri dish. They literally tell you to wear shower shoes in the dorm showers.

  11. Right, Fauci doesn't want you to know that the vaccine might not be totally effective, which is why he just told you that the vaccine might not be totally effective.

  13. Just delay the season until November 7th, if you listen to all the Trumpers thr virus will disappear the Tuesday before.

  14. You wanna know who is happy and hoping for a cancellation? Every coach on the hot seat. They just got a free pass and and more than likely a year added on to their contract.

  15. Trevor Lawrence’s opinion. “People are at just as much, if not more risk, if we don’t play. Players will all be sent home to their own communities where social distancing is highly unlikely and medical care and expenses will be placed on the families if they were to contract COVID-19,”Lawrence said on Twitter. “Not to mention the players coming from situations that are not good for them/ their future and having to go back to that. Football is a safe haven for so many people. We are more likely to get the virus in everyday life than playing football. Having a season also incentivizes players being safe and taking all of the right precautions to try to avoid contracting covid because the season/ teammates safety is on the line. Without the season, as we’ve seen already, people will not social distance or wear masks and take the proper precautions.”

  23. No kidding, it was nice to see the schedule and sort of think about what might be...but come on, we know this is over. I have practice tomorrow, I am shocked we have not cancelled yet. Coaches will be masked up...while 200 players 9-12 will not be.

  25. I don't think it suggested that it was a permanent alignment or conference switch. Just 4 teams from the BIG 10 joining with the Big 12 for this season. If any teams could get away with it, OSU and Michigan could. Is the BIG 10 comish going to ban them for a year and risk pissing them off? I doubt it. I doubt anything could happen at this late date however because everyones schedule would have to be redone. There would be arguing over who gets paid what and Texas would be a thorn in everyones side.

  26. The GOP has done a great job over the past 28 years duping the masses into thinking Hilary Clinton is the devil. Hilary Clinton is no worse than the average senator. She’s just married to Bill and was seen as a threat to become president someday, so they’ve been working on her this entire time. Her presidency would have been the status quo for a Democrat president. It would been similar to Obama’s presidency. The economy would have improved at the same pace as it improved under Obama and improved under Trump (pre Covid). But there are people who think Trump has done an amazing job and thought things were horrible under Obama. It’s nuts.

  28. Ultimately the herd immunity idea as a strategy for this seems not great to me. Sure, you may get through it quicker, but if this turns out to be endemic then you are going to end up looking bad. Either way, drawing things out gives doctors and scientists more time to study the virus, create better treatments and ultimate create a vaccine. Yes the same amount of people may get the virus in a country who pursues strict measures, but these cases are more spread out making them easier to handle for the healthcare system, as well as giving patients better treatment as time progresses. Ultimately, it should result in less deaths, and so far it has. No one should make sweeping comments about the long term here but we will see as the data comes out. Also as an aside, of course the scientist who went with herd immunity is going to defend herd immunity lol. Not everyone agrees with him. https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2020/07/21/coronavirus-swedish-herd-immunity-drove-up-death-toll-column/5472100002/

  29. And, why would it get better? School is starting in most places, next week. The places that are no remote learning are going to create new cases. Fall sports at the HS level are going to create new cases.

  32. It is weird. The P5 should break away and form the top division. G5 forms their own and has their own championship. I'd watch that in a heartbeat. Competition on the same level is always entertaining. I think it meant the P5 pays the athletic budget of many schools with those OOC games. No games means no budget, no budget means no season.
    2 points
  33. I'm not sure what that P5 AD would mean about "no season anyway" unless they meant the G5 are just cannon fodder for the P5. Which is true, but then it begs the question - why are there 130 teams in D1 when half of them have zero chance of winning a championship? College football's structure is weird.

  35. It’s idiotic to ignore the negative and not try to fix it, especially when things are on a downward slope. Which means at one time we knew how to do them, so we should be able to figure out how to get back there.

  36. Agree 100%. The most frustrating thing about all of this is the scatter shots of mitigation methods. No one at any level of leadership is on the same page of anything, even within the same organizations. No football, but go ahead and go to the bars with all of your dorm friends. According to Pete Ricketts in March "the first sign of community spread, we'll shut down"; Ricketts in August "Wear a mask if you want too...". OPS goes all in to limit exposures; Millard, Elkhorn, Gretna, Bennington, Papillion-LaVista do what they do... I'm to the point where someone in charge either says "everyone stays locked in their homes for 3 weeks to get rid of the virus" or "screw it, let's just pretend it doesn't exist..." I'm tired of watching unqualified people being put in a position to make decisions they aren't prepared for and to have it negated by the equally unqualified people a few miles away making a different decision. This is just all so frustrating.

  38. +1. Particularly in the era of COVID, it's mind-boggling to me that some people maintain that the political equivalent of the nerdy, over-prepared teacher's pet from school could've possibly done a worse job than the hell we're currently living (for Trump, golfing) through.

  44. Eh, when we could potentially have democracy dissolving before our eyes, I think it's important to consider the timing of this stuff. Kinda like maybe Comey shouldn't have made his comment about opening the Clinton investigation while for some reason not mentioning the Trump investigation. He may have significantly, negatively altered our country's trajectory because he didn't consider politics.
