  1. I'm more skeptical of Held than I am of anyone else on this coaching staff. At this point, he looks a lot like Keith Williams: all recruiting hype and no production.

  2. First, no one has actually claimed that. Second, the fact that they are behind has been proven and acknowledged by Rivals. But please continue to exaggerate what other people are saying and acting like they are just making things up.

  3. I still think if that first game doesn't get canceled due to the lightning we end up at least 6-6 in 2018 which would have snowballed further. Starting with the close loss to Colorado with no warm up and severe blue balls really threw us down a well it took too long to climb out of.

  5. I agree, in year 4 we shouldn’t be using words like “potential” or “inexperienced” for the RBs or the WRs or really any position group. Part of recruiting imo is also holding on to the guys you had at one point. If you recruit a bunch of potential and good players but they don’t stick around or ever realize their potential, you’ve just wasted time and effort and its a sign you aren’t recruiting the right mentality and are failing to develop them. This year should tell us all we’ll ever need to know about the long term viability of this coaching staff. And I don’t want to hear what a brutal schedule this is. There’s Oklahoma and tOSU and then everyone else are teams we should expect to compete with or beat. Its the B1G West for chrissakes. I’m done with excuses.

  9. Yea that’s what I was alluding to is that they seem to prefer spreading it around. I’m sure the theory is to keep guys fresh while also spreading the carries to keep them all happy but my opinion is that our backs rarely seem to find a rhythm.

  10. Yeah playing Wan'dale at RB was a damned if you do damned if you don't. You had to get Wan'dale the ball or he would leave/Giving the ball to Wan'dale at RB is the reason why he left.

  13. It's nice to see that the Nebraska kids are getting to play at places like Auburn, Missouri and OU. One can see that at least the high schools are producing talented players. When one sees this kind of talent in the state one can at least begin to see that if we could get back to our roots that we have players in which a program could be developed. For me, it appears that there is a better base of development within the High Schools in Nebraska then their use to be. So, if one could get back to the basics at OL and DL you would think one could formulate a way to keep and develop these kids that are going to solid programs and then add in the flair we use to be able to attract on the perimeter.

  14. What's fascinating is those who couldn't see the qualities and abilities in a player like Wandale. So, because he isn't the all-purpose back that saves the team then, "he sucks ... we don't need him ... he's not that good". And then now, Held isn't that good ... he can't develop players, etc. So, you add in those injuries and covid [which hurts development] and leave Wandale without anything around him developing [and lay the blame on him that he isn't the Savior of the program]. Then we lose the face/star/bright spot of the program with the most experience of the program who is ready for his best years [with folks saying, "it doesn't matter ... we don't need him] and now we are back to Held can't recruit or build any depth. We keep staying "young" because we either can't or don't seem to be able to keep our WR or RB's for the necessary years [some of it is in our control, some not]. It's all just so "fan-ish" to me. I'm offering no judgment. It just makes me smile. I'm hopeful for Ervin/Yant as a 1-2 combo this season. Plus, if the OL really is good and our strong suit, then anyone should be able to emerge from our current dust.

  15. Maybe that's true, but Ozigbo had one of the more wasted careers in recent Husker Football. Was late to see the field his senior year (maybe that was on him being out of shape), and Riley absolutely wasted him. The game his Freshman year against Illinois stands out. Had a breakout game, the talent was obvious, and then you barely saw him over the next few seasons.

  16. If you are referring to 2020, the RB room was killed by injuries and COVID. It’s difficult to get a guy to play in a position if players aren’t available.

  17. Being stuck using Wan'dale as an RB had absolutely nothing to do with the O-line. Seriously, I know there were some injuries and covid to deal with, but Held couldn't get anyone ready to play besides Mills, at the position that's usually one of the easiest for newcomers?!

  18. When I heard the NIL debate I thought they were talking about getting paid from one's YouTube or whatever. I didn't know it meant getting directly on a company payroll. I don't see how this could be anything but a bidding war for talent. One of many messes will be a recruit's star rating. It was messed up enough before. Now an additional star means thousands of dollars in his pocket. U know the boosters, err I mean business owners are going to shell out for the 5*s.

  21. When Miami right now TODAY can show recruits that every single one of their players is making $6k per year off of ONE DEAL> Thats an incentive where a booster doesnt have to have with a recruit. When a recruit sees the starting QB is making $100K- they can figure out, that they will too if they are a starting QB. Kids are a bit smarter than youre giving them credit for.

  26. More NIL deals and a new twist. Now athletes can own their own businesses and pay themselves for promoting it. One player has big Pine Straw business. If youve ever lived in the Southeast you know how huge that business is. Big flatbeds invading your neighborhood with guys knocking on your door to ask if you wanted pine straw bales spread. https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/sec-football/so-far-these-5-favorite-nil-deals-sec-players-2021/

  29. This one is hard for me. The guy can recruit. He has always had talent in the room. His development of said talent hasn't been outstanding but his 3 most talented backs have been with him for like a combined year and a half (Oz, Mo, Bell). Oz was already molded and needed only fine tuning, Mo was great but had off field issues, bell left after a cup of coffee. Mills came in and was highly recruited...but let's not forget, he was a B back at GT. That a glorified fullback. Vision was not required there. He struggled in that department. Then he recruited smaller guys, guys that were diamonds in the rough or guys that had serious injuries. In hopes that everyone mentioned above would pan out & he'd have time to develop them before having to use them. Flash forward to now, knowing how it all turned out. Held recruited high on potential and low on immediate readiness in the first few years...with the exceptions listed above. With all that said, he recruited his best back yet this year. A guy that has the flash and the polish. Ervin is ready to play and will do well this year. Morrison has the potential to do great things too, he has all the tools. Scott is a freak, but has vision issues as well. He's mills 2.0. fortunately for us, he's got time to figure that out. Yant is the wildcard. He's ozigbo. He's the bruiser with burst. He was a chunk, and now he's leaned way down. Good thing for us is he did it after his first year here...not before his last season. He was a gift. I'll always root for a kid like him. Held has a tough job, one he hasn't had a passing grade in for lots of reasons. He's got his best stable. He'll get his house in order. Keep in mind, the schematics of our offense have been pretty abysmal when it comes to RB production too.

  30. Ozigbo had talent but he wasn’t a good RB until his senior year. He showed flashes, but his YPC and tape showed he wasn’t that good. Also, his weight slowed him down and didn’t allow him to be on the field more than 2 plays at a time. The 2016 NU-Wisconsin game was on BTN last night, and Ozigbo had a couple nice carries, but was huffing and puffing and had to come out. Then, later on in a goal line carry, he was stuffed near the LOS and nearly fumbled. He wasn’t a consistent back until he lost the weight and ran with more speed as a senior.

  32. The Corvette thing is about observing among nerds, and being a game store owner I see plenty, that I'm the only one in my area that drives anything sporty. Not that there might be others, and there's other vehicles that rival the price tag, but it's just an observation. Why two? My first Corvette is a '96 Grand Sport (the one in my avatar picture), only 1000 were made which gives it some collectible status, so I ended getting a second one for my daily driver. I'm selling the '96 now so eventually will be down to 1. I should update my avatar picture since I just bought a 2017 Corvette. I have a passion for Corvettes. I thought about going the sedate sedan route recently, but after one test drive of such a vehicle I realized I'd never do that. That be like... rooting for Iowa. I was hoping nerd stigma has gone away somewhat, D&D has become a bit more mainstream, but I guess knuckle draggers will always be with us.

  34. I'm an engineer that is equal parts nerd and sports fan. I love board games, reading, and Sci-Fi, but I also love football, baseball and hockey. Things don't have to be mutually exclusive but certain folks who are insecure with things in their own life tend to lash out. They also like to declare themselves smart, or in the know. I've learned in life that the ones who declare themselves something are often not, but those are their own demons to deal with eventually. You do you and who gives a $%!+ what anyone else thinks.

  37. Lauren Wolfe, the former freelance editor who was fired by The New York Times over a pro-Biden tweet, defended her open political stance in a recent op-ed titled, "I’m a Biased Journalist and I’m Okay With That." Wolfe was ousted by the Times after she celebrated the arrival of then-President-elect Joe Biden at Joint Base Andrews ahead of his inauguration, writing "I have chills." Published on Friday in Washington Monthly, Wolfe argued that "being fair and having [a] point of view aren't incompatible" and that journalists "shouldn’t have to disguise or suppress their views." They don't suppress them. not sure she should have been fired for this...I mean Chris Mathews got chills up his leg from President Obama and he survived. It took the Me Too movement to get rid of him. The media fawning over a politician is nothing new. Kudos to her coming out and admitting that the media is bias.

  39. Who Trusts surveys? Seems like most are used to push a narrative, from both sides. Unless it’s asking for the NU football win total. They can Phrase the question in a certain way. You need to consider the political motivation of the source. When I answer surveys I totally jack with my answers but make them sound consistent so they take it as valid.

  40. That or we need to make it less hard for people to raise a family (financially) and potentially subsidize larger families.

  41. That's disingenuous. Players will be making MUCH more than that and of course they will all be involved in supervised strength, conditioning and diet plans. THats a mutually beneficial deal. Whats real is INSTEAD of investing $155,000,000 in a new facility. You can take say a small fraction of that- say $10,000,000 per year and put towards players NIL- so over $100K per player. If the goal is to improve the program, why should it matter if its an upgrade from the #40 best facility to #10? Why not put it towards buying players? What gets you the best ROI? NOT facilities It's the new equation and whoever figures out how to do it well will win a LOT of games. Like when we used to know how to do weights well and not very many others knew how.
